21、 Almost everyone agrees on the hot dog basics: a long bread roll with a hot sausage inside it. And that’s what has led to a big question — is a hot dog a sandwich, or is it in a special category of its own?
“People have really strong opinions on both sides,” says Eric Mittenthal, president of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC). In November, the council published an official announcement ruling that the hot dog is not a sandwich. It argues that the hot dog is too significant to be considered “just a sandwich.” The council admits that the hot dog was once the “Frankfurter sandwich,” but says that people no longer use that name. Today, no one would call a hot dog eating contest a sandwich eating contest.
But others disagree. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) includes a sausage inside a bread roll in its sandwich category. But it also calls the food a “sandwich type product”. In May, dictionary publisher Merriam Webster said that the hot dog is a sandwich. The Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition, defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between” or “one slice of bread covered with food”. The announcement fueled a heated debate among hot dog fans. If hot dogs are sandwiches, where do you draw the line? Are burritos (玉米馅饼) sandwiches too?
This debate won’t stop Americans from eating piles of hot dogs this summer. During peak hot dog season — from Memorial Day to Labor Day — Americans will eat about 7 billion of them. That’s 818 hot dogs consumed every second. People love hot dogs so much that in 2015, a hot dog emoji was released so people can easily tweet or text an image of the famous food. This may come in handy soon, since July is National Hot Dog Month.
【1】Who thinks that the hot dog is special enough to be in a category of its own?
A.USDA. B.NHDSC.
C.The author. D.Merriam-Webster.
【2】What do some hot dog fans think of the definition of a sandwich in the mentioned dictionary?
A.It seems too wide. B.It is quite satisfactory.

A.A small image used in electronic communications that symbolizes something.
B.A poster used to advertise hot dogs.
C.A toy given by a hot dog seller.
D.A facial expression posted on a letter as a stamp.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The history of hot dogs. B.Different kinds of sandwiches.
C.Do Americans really love hot dogs? D.Is a hot dog a sandwich?
22、The world has a fast growing population and people need more land for houses, factories, highways, and so on. The farmland is decreasing with each passing day. How to meet the need of feeding the growing population? One way is to introduce some high-output gene into a crop to enable it to produce more. Biologists over the years have discovered genes which can raise output of the crops, resist pests, improve taste, etc.
However, in many western countries there is widespread concern over the safety of“Genetically Modified”(GM) (转基因) foods, because they think there may be serious problems of environment, health, safety, morality and so on.
As a scientist I must admit GM foods involve great risks to humans. In fact in Europe they’re called “Frankenstein foods” by many. Frankenstein is a character in a novel. He was a very clever scientist. He created a monster(怪物), which eventually killed him.
Soybeans can be made into many foods. However, it’s hard to trace them. Therefore, it’s very important we have to make sure the soybean, if genetically modified, is free from any poisonous matter harmful to human beings. For this we need very good testing. We do have some testing on some animals, but no completely satisfactory testing has ever been made so far. They’re entirely new, and their problems are entirely unknown. It takes time to develop persuasive tests to know whether they’re harmful to us or not.
We may not be able to tell what may happen if we take GM foods. Some of them may be resistant to antibiotics (抗生素). Then many of the medicines we have today will have no effect on people eating GM foods.
A more likely case is the GM foods may contain genes some people are allergic to.
GM products have already come into our lives but most people even know nothing about it.
At least we have to be clear about what we are eating. The China Consumers Association is calling for labeling (标注) on GM foods so that consumers will know before they buy them.
【1】The chief purpose of developing GM foods is to_______.
A. feed the fast growing population
B. make the foods much cheaper
C. make the foods much tastier
D. kill pests on the crops
【2】From the passage we can infer that _____.
A. many Europeans reject GM foods
B. GM foods are very popular in Europe
C. Frankenstein foods can make people clever
D. Frankenstein was a scientist creating GM foods
【3】The underlined phrase “trace them” in Paragraph 4 probably means“ ”.
A. find their market B. raise their quality
C. find their origins D. enjoy their taste
【4】Which of the following is TRUE about GM foods?
A. The testing shows GM soybean foods are free from poisonous matter.
B. Sometimes consumers can hardly tell GM soybeans from natural ones.
C. GM foods prove to be safe to humans after some testing on animals.
D. GM foods problems have been known after testing on animals.
【5】What can we learn from the passage?
A. GM foods make antibiotics fail to function properly.
B. People eating GM foods will suffer from food allergies.
C. As GM foods are safe at present, they’re certainly safe later on.
D. People should be informed of which foods are GM foods.
23、 My kids lifted the Christmas ornaments (饰品) out of a wooden box in Gee’s living room. They were so happy and excited to see tiny stuffed cats and cartoon characters. Gee stood beside them, quietly explaining each treasure. She told me that she and Tom built their Christmas ornament collection piece by piece each year. She smiled as we left with the box, because her precious heirlooms, gathered over a life time, had found a new home.
We first met Tom and Gee in the early days of our marriage. Someone had been returning our garbage cans to the garage, and Jim and I had wondered who One day we spotted him: a man who lived across the street. I baked cookies and left them on a bench outside the garage with a thank-you note. We then found a typed letter from Tom, explaining that he had begun returning cans for people he hardly knew, because neighbors had done this for Gee when he was in hospital. Now he paid it forward by doing the same for all of us.
A few years after we’d moved in, Tom died, much to our sorrow. Gee told us she still talked to Tom every day. When we left her house with the precious box, I realized how hard it must be for Gee to part with that box, a piece of Tom.
These days, we’re planning a move. The house that seemed so huge six years ago is filled with furniture, books, toys and, of course, people. We know it’s time to go, but soon realize gaining a third bedroom seems like a bad trade for all we stand to lose.
This Christmas, we’ll decorate our tree with Gee and Tom’s ornaments. Maybe I’ll talk to Tom just as Gee still does. Thank you, I’ll say For teaching us what it means to be a neighbor.

24、Icon, the Austin-based startup that designed the 3D printer, is building six small homes on the site called Community First! Village, creating the world's first 3D-printed neighborhood.
The printer squeezes out the company's custom(定制的), low-cost material to build walls as high as 8.5 feet and as wide as 28 feet; the walls for a single small house can be completed over 24 hours.
For now, the rest of the house is built traditionally. Workers prepare the site and lay a foundation, and after the walls are printed, they add the roof, windows, doors and pipe system.
Though the technology is still at an early stage, it's believed that it will ultimately be possible to print a home at half the cost of traditional construction, in half the time. The material is also stronger in disasters like hurricanes than a traditional stick-built house. That's one reason that it could be especially useful for affordable housing.
For Community First! Village, choosing to test the new technology was a natural extension of its willingness to experiment. The community was established in 2015, created by Alan Graham, who had spent the past two decades volunteering on the streets of Austin. Rather than just providing housing to those experiencing homelessness, Graham wanted to provide a true sense of community.
The village, filled with tiny houses and RVs, was inspired in part by his experience traveling in RV parks, where neighbors naturally gathered outside. The village has outdoor kitchens, a dog park, a garden, a community market, and other places for people to meet and talk. "There's all activities to bring you out of the house and to interact with each other and support each other," says Shea, a resident of the village.
There are more than 200 homes in the community now, and as it expands to add more than 300 additional homes, some residents are moving into the new section of the community.
【1】Which part of the houses can be printed?
A.The roof structure.
B.The windows.
C.The walls.
D.The pipe network.
【2】What is an advantage of 3D-printed houses?
A.Accommodating more people.
B.Being easier to be moved around.
C.Providing nicer living experience.

A.His traveling experience inspired him.
B.The friendly neighbors made a suggestion.
C.His interest in volunteering reminded him.
D.The condition of his community touched him.

A.3D technology is used to build houses.
B.The homeless got free 3D-printed houses.
C.New communities will feature 3D technology.
D.3D-printed houses will replace traditional ones.

26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a break time at the village school. The bell had rung, and the children had run out into the bright sunshine, wild with laughter and fun. They chased after each other and played heartily, with giggles lingering in the relaxing atmosphere.
All but poor Davy. He came out last and very slowly, but he did not laugh. He was in trouble, and the bright, golden sunlight did not make him glad.
He walked across the yard, and sat down on a stone behind the old maple. A little bird on the highest branch sang just to make him laugh.
But Davy did not notice it. He was thinking of the cruel words that had been said about his ragged clothes. The tears stole out of his eyes, and ran down his cheeks. He closed his eyes to hold back his tears and bit his lips tight.
Poor Davy had no father, and his mother had to work hard to keep him at school. The bell finally rang, indicating it’s time to come home.
At four o’clock that afternoon, he went home by the path that led across the fields and through the woods. He still felt sad. Davy did not wish to trouble his mother; so he wandered a while among the trees, and at last threw himself on the green moss (苔藓) under them.
Just then his teacher came along. She saw who it was, and stopped, saying kindly, “What is the matter, Davy?”
He drooped his head and did not utter a word, but the tears began again to well up.
“Won’t you tell me? Perhaps I can help you.”
Deeply encouraged by her warmth and sincerity, he poured out all his trouble he came across. When he ended, she was lost in deep thought and for a while she came up, gave Davy a consoling pat and said, cheerily, “I have a plan, Davy, that I think will help you.”
“Oh, what is it?” he said, sitting up with a look of hope, while a tear fell upon a blue violet (紫罗兰).
“Well, how would you like to be a little flower merchant?”
