21、 A special device (设备) worn on the head that sends electrical charges into the brain may improve the memory abilities of older people. The device may even give them the ability to remember things as well as a person 20 to 30 years younger than them. These are the findings of a study published in Nature Neuroscience earlier this month.
Researchers working on the study found that the age-related damage to working memory can be repaired. This is possible through stimulating (刺激) two important areas of the brain at a special rhythm. Working memory is the information held temporarily for use in immediate activities such as reasoning and decision-making.
42 younger adults aged 20 to 29 and 42 older adults aged 60 to 76 took part in the study. The researchers tested all subjects for their performance in a working memory activity. The findings are still early and only relate to healthy volunteers. But the findings could point to new ways to increase brain operation in older people suffering from diseases that affect these operations, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.
Electroencephalography, or EEG, is a method of observing brain activity. Transcranial alternating current stimulation, or tACS, is the means of sending electrical charges into the brain. Using both EEG and tACS, the scientists stimulated the brains of the group of young and old people. They were able to make small changes to the brainwave connections linked to their working memory.
Without brain stimulation, the older people were slower and less correct in their memories than the younger ones. This was because the younger people had higher levels of connections of certain brain wave rhythms.
Robert Reinhart, a researcher at Boston University, said that when older adults received active brain stimulation, they improved their working-memory test scores to the levels of the younger people. The effect lasted for at least 50 minutes after the stimulation was given.

A.It can record what has happened for them.
B.It can stimulate the brain and make it active.

C.They had 200 volunteers join in their research.
D.They kept track of two groups of people.
【3】EEG is different from tACS because

23、A beloved pet that went missing in the Highlands area of Vancouver Island was found seven days later by an army of volunteers and was reunited with her owner.
The mastiff-retriever cross (马士提夫獒犬), named Luna, was found trapped on a narrow cliff ledge (岩架), and was reunited with her owner after a heroic rescue last month. It’s believed that Luna had chased an animal out of her yard and got lost, somehow falling off a cliff and landing on a two-foot-wide ledge. She remained there, alone, as her owner and searchers wildly looked for her.
“It was terrible because it was getting colder and she always sleeps next to me or my daughter,” said Saryta Schaefer, Luna’s owner.
After she’d been missing for several days, there was a break in the case. Across the water, Ron Cheeke had heard Luna’s cries for help. Cheeke decided to record the sound and notify the pet rescue group ROAM. He even went so far as to search the area in a boat to try to locate the exact source of the sound. “I used a pot, and every time I banged on the pot, the dog barked back,” Cheeke told CTV News.
Eventually, after searching on both water and land, a team found the scared dog and used a harness (保护带) to pull her back to safety and to her owner. “I almost fell over when I saw her-it was quite exciting,” said Schaerer.
Cheeke said his own dog had died recently and he was motivated to help. “I lost my dog last year, so it was good,” said Cheeke. “It’s good to see it back with its owners."
“There’s no feeling like it. When you’re involved with this and you get the owner back with the pet, it’s worth all the money in the world,” added ROAM volunteer Andy Carswell.

24、Many people have long dreamed of being able to fly around as simply as riding a bicycle. Yet the safety and strength of a flying bike was always a big problem.
Over the past 10 years, developments in technology have moved the dream of personal flying vehicles closer to reality. Now, two groups of inventors say such vehicles may be available very soon.
Grant Stapleton from Malloy Aeronautics says the Hoverbike, which is able to get in and out of small spaces very quickly, will be a truly personal flying vehicle. "It can be moved across continents very quickly because it can be folded and packed," he adds.
Mr. Stapleton says safety was the company's main concern when developing the Hoverbike. He ays the designers solved the safety issue by using overlapping rotors (折叠旋翼) to power the vehicle. The company is testing both a one-third size model and a full-size prototype (原型) of the Hoverbike.
Inventors say their Hoverbike will most likely be used first by the police and emergency rescue teams.
In New Zealand, the Martin Aircraft Company is also testing a full-size prototype of its personal flying bike, called Jetpack. It can fly for more than 30 minutes, up t0 1,000 meters high and reach a speed of 74 kilometers per hour.
Peter Coker is the CEO of Martin Aircraft Company. He said Jetpack "is built around safety from the start, " In his words, "reliability is the most important part of it. We have safety built into the actual structure itself, very similar to a Formula One racing car. "
Jetpack uses a gasoline-powered engine that produces two powerful jet streams. Mr. Coker says it also has a parachute (降落伞) that can be used should there be an emergency.
"It opens at a very low altitude and actually saves both the aircraft and the pilot in an emergency," he adds.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn’t going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived nearby because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us surprise.
Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lantems gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters (怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.
There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts,小妖精), or Jack-o-Lantems. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.
"Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween," Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.
"Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.
Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. " Is today Halloween?" she asked. "I completely forgot. I am so sorry!"
