二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Earlier this week the online UK supermarket Ocado told its customers that it had “limited ability” to deliver ice ream. Why? Because the price of natural gas has increased greatly, which has hit the supply of CO2 in the UK. And that has led to a cut in the supply of dry ice that supermarkets use to keep food cool in their delivery vans (小型货车). So no ice cream.

This mini crisis has been fairly quickly resolve, for now at least. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry. This incident serves as a timely reminder of just how reliant we are on fossil fuels. Despite our optimistic enthusiasm for wind and solar power, one way or another oil and gas use is shot through every part of our economic and social lives. That will be the case for many decades to come.

In his recently updated book There is No Planet B, Mike Berners-Lee lays out the challenge. When we talk about shifting from fossil fuels to clean energy of one kind or another, we aren’t discussing taking the amount of energy we use now and producing that amount in a different way. Instead, our target is always on the move. The more energy we can get our hands on, the more we use—even if our use of it becomes more efficient.

Energy usage is going to keep rising, while energy transitions (转变) tend to both take a very long time and never actually end. We just pile new sources on top of old. The world still uses much the same amount of traditional biomass (wood etc) as it did 100 years ago. We are running to stand still. This will change. But not as fast as you might like to think. In 2019, 33 percent of our new power generation needs were met by renewable energy. That’s a start. But 40 percent were met by natural gas.

There’s urgency here of course—which might speed things up. But there is something else that might slow us down. It didn’t take much to move people to fossil fuels—they are relatively easy to extract, relatively easy to transport, hugely energy dense and efficient and, of course, cheap. Until their externalities were understood, who could possibly have objected? Our current transition is different: people and companies will switch not because the new sources are easier to access, cheaper or more energy dense but because regulation mandates that they must.

Either way, the truth is that whether we like it or not our energy transition involves long term reliance on fossil fuels. That means we should stop demolishing them. Instead, we should focus on making their extraction cleaner and more efficient while we wait for the engineering challenges around a renewables-led future to be solved.

If we don’t do this—if we allow ourselves to be beguiled by the idea that solar is so advanced that we no longer need filthy fuels to have ice cream, we, will find the future held back by needlessly expensive energy—and almost certainly ice-cream free.

【1】What do the first two paragraphs mainly show?

A.The necessity for traditional fuels.

B.Our enthusiasm for clean energy.

C.The seriousness of energy crisis.

D.UK’s dependence on dry ice.

【2】According to Mike Berners-Lee, ______.

A.we have more types of energy on hand

B.the use of energy becomes more efficient

C.energy transition is far from being realized

D.we are closer to the aim of replacing fossil fuels

【3】The underlined word “demolising” in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by ______.

A.wasting

B.devaluing

C.distributing

D.justifying

【4】What is the writer’s attitude toward the transition to the renewable energy?

A.Indifferent.

B.Defensive.

C.Disapproving.

D.Cautious.

22、Positive Body Image Isn’t Enough

Body image as a construct focuses on our relationship with what our bodies look like. Most research in the field that’s been conducted with adolescent girls has focused on negative body image and its association with things like body dissatisfaction and eating disorders. 【1】 The Dove Self-Esteem Project is a leader in this evolution. Its website states that “our mission is to ensure that the next generation grows up enjoying a positive relationship with the way they look - helping young people raise their self-respect and realize their full potential.”

To fulfill this goal, we need to find ways to promote positive embodiment — that is, healthy ways of subjectively experiencing one’s body in the world that go above and beyond the way we look to the outside world.

1. Promote mindful self-care. In today’s “selfie” culture, where it seems like everything is about appearance, how do we help teens focus on the subjective, lived-in experiences in their bodies? One way is to promote mindful self-care — defined by Cook-Cottone (2015) as behaviors that cultivate an active appreciation for, and engagement with, the body. So, things that promote mind-body connection, like mindfulness, art, and the physical care of the body. 【2】

2. 【3】 Girls learn from a very young age that their bodies are valued for what they look like. Thus, it’s important to promote body functionality, which encompasses “everything the body is capable of doing — rather than how it looks” (Alleva, Veldhuis, & Martijn, 2016, p. 10). For example, focusing on how strong a girl’s legs are and how they help her run and play soccer, rather than how “cute” she looks in her uniform.

3. Look at the social context. Positive embodiment doesn’t develop on its own. Teens are under pressure from all directions, including peers, social media, and parents. 【4】 And we can challenge society as a whole to promote places and spaces where girls can develop positive embodiment in a well-rounded way.

A.In promoting these activities, we can encourage teens to focus on how they feel from within when engaged in these pursuits — rather than what they looked like while doing them.

B.As such, we can model ways of engaging in activities that promote positive embodiment and encourage girls to surround themselves with peers who do the same.

C.Although body image plays a role in having positive embodiment, the two don’t always go hand-in-hand.

D.In recent years, however, there has been a movement toward focusing on positive body image.

E.Be confident of body image.

F.Focus on body functionality.

24、Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips.

● Read books from past eras.

【1】 Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Alert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.

【2】

Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”

● Shop at secondhand bookstores.

Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers. 【3】

● Check out authors’ reading lists.

In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading. 【4】 Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”

● Make the final decision by yourself.

【5】 It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.

A.Interest is the best teacher.

B.Great authors are great readers.

C.Leave some room for older works.

D.Learn more about those great authors.

E.Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.

F.There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.

G.Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections than secondhand book owners.

三、完形填空(共1题,共 5分)

25、During my first improv (即兴表演)class, I learned a core concept of improv: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that zebras are librarians, for example, then zebras are librarians. We do not _________ the logic. we say “yes” and continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong.

To do this _________, our teacher warned us that we’d have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv_________ when performers stay open to different possibilities and say whatever pops into their minds.

I got a taste of how _________ that is when acting out my first scene. My classmate turned to me and said, “Mom is going to be so mad.” Mad about what? My mind spun out ideas, and my inner critic shot them all down. We broke the car? No, that’s too easy. We failed a test? No, you don’t want your classmates thinking you’re stupid on the first day. I finally _________ an answer: “Yes, we’re going to be late for dinner.” The scene proceeded from there, and we eventually finished as two sisters who lost their way on a hiking trip.

The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable thinking on my feet. I never _________ my inner critic entirely, but over time, I didn’t police my words with quite so much vigor. I also became better at _________, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment.

The training came in handy 6 months ago, when I was giving a seminar(研讨课)about my science. An audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t _________ the information I’d presented. Instead of getting annoyed, I _________ the “yes, and” approach — accepting the question at face value and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer.

The benefits of improv go beyond __________. Early on in graduation school, I would get stuck when I got unexpected data in my experiments; my inner critic would assume I had made a mistake. But now, after accepting the “yes, and” concept,I no longer go into an experiment thinking that I already __________ the story my data are going to tell.

Last year, I used that approach after encountering confusing data. Instead of getting __________, I kept exploring the data and ended up identifying a new type of cell. If I hadn’t stayed open to the possibility that the results were __________, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my PhD. so far.

All scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say zebras are librarians, then it’s worth investigating whether zebras are, __________, librarians. Our job as scientists isn’t to get data that __________ a pre-understood story. Our job is to say “yes, and”.
