21、   When you look up and around, you are likely to be surrounded by architecture. Unique among creative and artistic professions, architecture always reflects the age and culture that produced it. Designing and building architecture takes time, money and cooperation. Architects work with dozens to shape their buildings, and along this chain, a deeper and richer set of values are transmitted — ones that define exactly how cultures see their world and how people see each other.

Beyond providing shelter, architecture becomes the stage set for our life. It’s the reason we feel empowered on the roof deck of an 80-story building that is connected with a busy public square. Communities form within architecture and take on their buildings’ characteristics. Architecture connects to economics and the sciences, and the people that practice it can both be careful technicians and poets of space and form.

Defining architecture only in terms of other professions does harm to it, and there is a lot of knowledge within architecture that is separated from the practical concerns of building. Looking at the built world critically, instead of considering it a set of established traditions, shows that architecture is an entirely human creation, which can take nearly any shape we want it to. Patterns we see everywhere don’t spring from wisdom about how things should look. They are actually the result of special accumulations of cultural values, the materials available, economics, geographic location and climate. Most of these factors are changeable, so while architecture changes slowly compared to other artistic mediums, it still develops.

Architecture is futurism. Each time it offers a critique (评论) that suggests new ways to live, work or play, it becomes a feat of world-building that makes it hard to distinguish from science fiction. Architecture is interested in the future, and architects are trained to imagine the world not as it is, but as it could be.

【1】What’s special about architecture?

A.It helps people live at ease.

B.It’s aimed at showing values.

C.It can reflect the culture clearly.

D.It shows man’s wisdom directly.

【2】What can we infer about architecture from Paragraph 2?

A.It makes us feel powerful.

B.It’s a great project for humans.

C.It’s connected with many aspects in life.

D.It provides a stage for other art forms.

【3】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.The world.

B.The architecture.

C.The creation.

D.The tradition.

【4】What’s the text mainly about?

A.Why architecture is important.

B.How architecture affects the future.

C.How architecture reflects man’s talent.

D.Who regards architecture as a special art form.

22、   According to a survey conducted by The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, the monarch butterfly is facing a sharp population decline that could soon lead to its extinction.

The monarch butterfly is considered the "king of all butterflies due to its extreme beauty, hence the name "monarch". The most popular among the North American butterflies, the grand black-and-orange in vertebrate(无脊椎动物) is known for its yearly mass migration of up to 3,000 miles from the Baja California Peninsula to California's Central Coast every winter, beautifully covering all the trees along their path.

In 1980, its population was recorded to be about 4. 5 million and by the mid-2000's, there were barely 100,000 remaining. In 2018, the number of monarch butterflies fell down to only 28,260, which makes a 99. 4 percent decline in 39 years.

"It's mind-boggling. We're now down below 1 percent of the historic population," Says Emma Pelton, a Xerces Society Conservation biologist.

A variety of factors could be involved to cause the monarch butterflies' near extinction. One could have a co-relation to the lessening of other insects such as bees and other bird species. Another factor could be due to a number of human economic activities such as urbanization and illegal logging which lessens the butterflies' habitat, and pesticides widely used on corn and soybean crops.

Because of these chains of events, an "extinction  vortex(旋风)” has occurred where the process of  extinction would be near unstoppable since the species won't be able to reproduce and raise their numbers the natural way.

The mass disappearance of the monarch butterfly and other endangered species is a wake up call of our little time remaining to positively shift the direction of the ecological environment for a massive improvement in the near future, in order to help mother nature and all the other living species in this earth.

【1】What is the monarch butterfly noted for?

A.Its extreme beauty as king.

B.Its special name with monarch.

C.Its manner of reproduction.

D.Its regular large-scale migration.

【2】How many monarch butterflies disappear yearly?

A.About 20,000.

B.About 150,000.

C.About 114,660.

D.About 44,550.

【3】Which factor may cause the monarch butterfly's near extinction?

A.The growth of cities.

B.The popularity of other insects.

C.The cleaning of lakes.

D.Less crops such as soybean.

【4】What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To inform us of something about butterflies.

B.To appeal to us to protect the ecological environment.

C.To analyze why monarch butterflies have gone extinct.

D.To attract visitors to California's Central Coast.

24、   Pre-school children who spend time together take on one another's personalities, a new research has found. The study shows that environment plays a key role in shaping people's personalities. While genetics still forms the central part of the human psyche (心理), the research finds that personality traits (特征) are "contagious" (传染的) among children. "Our finding flies in the face of common assumptions that personality can't be changed," said Dr. Jennifer Neal, co-author of the study.

The researchers studied the personalities and social networks of two pre-school classes for a full school year. One of the classes was a set of three-year-olds, and the other a set of four-year-olds. Children whose friends were hard-working or outgoing gradually took on these personality traits over time. Psychology expert Dr. Emily Dublin said kids are having a far bigger effect on each other than people may realize.

The new study is not the first to explore the contagious effects of personality traits. A 2015 psychology study found that rudeness at work can be contagious as it travels from person to person "like a disease". The study found that seeing a boss being rude to an employee was enough to cause people to be rude to those around them.

The researchers questioned 6,000 people on the social "climate" in their workplaces, which included offices, hotels and restaurants. They found 75 percent of those who took part said they had been treated rudely at least once in the past year. And the study also suggests that merely seeing other people being subjected to rudeness made it more likely that a person would treat their colleagues in the same way. Rudeness could include leaving someone off an invite to a company event, sending unkind emails, finding fault with others or failing to give praise.

Dr. Torkelson believes companies need to be more aware of the harm that rudeness in the workplace can do as it can damage the working environment. She said better training could help to fight against the problem.

26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

IKEA, known around the world as a supplier of furniture and other home goods, is taking steps to protect the environment. By 2030 IKEA plans to be a circular business, one whose products can all be reused or recycled rather than thrown away. To achieve this goal, the company is redesigning all of its products. How can it design products that will last longer and be easier to fix and that people can recycle when they are finished with them? By answering these questions, IKEA hopes to improve the sustainability of its business model.

IKEA wants people to be able to repair its products rather than throw them away when something goes wrong. To accomplish that goal, the company is standardizing the parts, materials and colors that it uses. This means that if a part needs to be replaced, it will be easy to find. In the past IKEA has only offered spare parts for some products; now it is greatly expanding the number of spare parts customers can purchase. This makes it feasible for customers to repair their own furniture. IKEA is also redesigning the parts of its products that are most likely to wear out quickly.

To extend the life of its products, IKEA is trying to make their maintenance easier. It is also making its products easier to take apart and transport, so the furniture is less likely to break when being moved or changing hands.

Sometimes people replace their furniture not because there is something wrong with it, but because their needs have changed. So IKEA is also trying to help people keep furniture for a longer time by making it easy to modify. Some pieces can be expanded or reduced in size as family members and guests come and go. Others have covers that can be exchanged for different look.

But even with all these efforts, it is likely that certain products will eventually no longer be usable. At that point they can be remanufactured — the pieces reassembled (重新组装) into something new-or recycled. And IKEA is designing products to make these processes easier. The company is also working to reduce waste in other areas, such as packaging and food waste from restaurants inside its stores.

These efforts to reduce the number of IKEA products that are abandoned and thrown in landfills will help create a more environmentally friendly economy.
