21、 Once upon a time, there was a little girl whose passion for pink was so over the top that Cinderella herself might have thought it was too much.
But this story has no ending – at least not yet. For a time, I – the mother in this fairy tale – worried it would end badly. I imagined that the princess obsession (痴迷) was the beginning of my daughter, Mari, becoming shallow. I feared that as an adult, she’d be easy prey (猎物) for marketing campaigns trying to get her to spend her hard-earned cash on makeup and face creams. But what concerned me most was that she would base her self-worth on her looks, which wouldn’t be good for her self-esteem (自尊).
Mari’s love for pink isn’t unique. Across America and beyond, there are millions of these little princesses. They cover their walls with pictures of princesses, and insist on wearing their princess dresses every day. But what does it all mean? Is it really something for me to worry about? A 2016 study found that princess obsessions in young women weren’t associated with body esteem. So I could tell parents of “little princesses” to relax, but of course we’re parents, so that would be pointless.
My daughter just turned 6, and she still loves dressing up and playing princess. She loves animals just as much though, and she spends a fair amount of time pretending she’s a puppy called Sonia. She can’t pass a large rock without trying to climb it, and she likes playing games, but only with rules she makes up.
As my daughter enters this next stage of her childhood, I should remember what her “royal days” have taught me. All of her passions – like her princess obsession – are truly hers. My opinion of what she should accept or reject is misguided. My job is not to stand in her way, but to clear the path ahead of her when I can, holding her hand as she travels along it.

22、Seated in a convertible (敞篷车) with the top down at 60 miles an hour, Mary looked at the flies that sat on top of Mark’s hair. How could they stay there? She wondered.
Mary had not seen Mark in years, until the other day when he came into the café where she worked. His appearance was different from when he was in high school. Now, he was a bit fat and thick glasses covered his eyes. However, that didn’t change Mary’s feelings for him at all. He had just bought a brand new red sports car and asked her if she would like to go for a ride and then have dinner with him. Her heart beat with excitement as he opened the door for her. She noticed something very strange as Mark got into the car and started to drive away. On the hair was a group of flies just sitting there.
Mary stared in amazement. It seemed the faster they drove, the more determined the flies were to stick to his hair.
Mary remained silent. She leaned forward and turned the radio on, to try to divert her attention away from the flies, but she couldn’t help thinking about them. She looked up at Mark, who was completely devoted to what was going on and continued to sing to the music while driving merrily along.
Finally, Mark pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road beside a diner and looked in the mirror and said, “Mary, I would like to comb my hair before we get something to eat. Could you reach under the seat and give me my hair cream?”
Mary reached under the seat and pulled out a camping backpack, which contained a round jar and started to laugh wildly as she pointed to the label (商标).

23、 It’s funny how readily we “take the advice of complete strangers” when shopping online. More than 80 percent of Americans say they read online reviews at least some of the time. But on sites such as Amazon and Yelp, businesses have learnt to “making the most of the rating system to the seller’s or the platform’s advantage”, eventually “making the star-rating scale useless”. Even in the case of confirmed reviews, it can be hard to know what the stars mean.
Amazon has stepped up the effort to provide transparency said Louise Matsakis in Wired.com. Its “Vine voices” program sends free products for testing to an invite-only community of “trusted reviewers”. Amazon has also started ranking its Top 10,000 Contributors on a daily leaderboard not “just by the number of reviews a person has but also by how many customers found their feedback to be helpful”. The current No.1 reviewer, a 45-year-old from North Dakota who has posted nearly 2,500 comments since 2002, has owned a bakery in Oregon, worked for a small newspaper, and had a 10-year stretch in the Navy as a nuclear welding inspector. Now he spends his time testing everything from fryers to popcorn makers, though he exceeded its weight limit by 70 pounds.
But sellers are still finding ways to deceive prospective buyers, said a reviewer. He said, “I identified more than 150 private Facebook groups where sellers openly exchange free products for five-star reviews. I joined four of them and was annoyed with a flurry of private messages from sellers. One offered to pay me $10 for a splendid review of what was already ‘one of the highest-ranked iPhone chargers’, with 3,971 five-star reviews and a trusted ‘Amazon choice’ label. When it arrived, the charger broke within minutes. I reached out to Amazon and those thousands of five-star reviews for the charger disappeared.”
The product now has 11 reviews and holds a rating of 2.5 stars. But before all those five-star reviews disappeared, how many shoppers spotted this $ 13.99 charger pack on Amazon’s first-page results and fell for the trick?
【1】What action has Amazon taken to make the star-rating scale useful?
A.Provide effectively checked comments for consumers.
B.Give priority to the advantage of customers.
C.Decide on contributors’ rank by the quantity of reviews.
D.Get reliable reviewers to test products before their release.
【2】What does the underlined word “deceive” in the third paragraph most probably mean?
A.Persuade. B.Instruct.
C.Interest. D.Cheat.
【3】What do we know about the charger seller in the last two paragraphs?
A.He convinced buyers to obtain free products.
B.He attempted to obtain excellent reviews by purchase.
C.He was in hot water and deleted all untrusted reviews.
D.He tricked buyers and disappeared from Amazon.
【4】Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

B.The Application of Rating System
C.Not Every Star Shines So Bright
D.Don’t Fall for the Trick of Sellers
24、Cancer is a leading cause of death around the world.
When it comes to cancer, the sooner you know you have it, the better your chances of surviving are.
A new blood test could change the way doctors and researchers find cancer in patients. Researchers say the test could provide some hints of the early forms of the disease.
Gareth Jenkins is a professor at the University of Swansea. He says he and his team did not look for cancer. They instead looked for a by-product of cancer, mutated (突变的) red blood cells. They looked for, what Jenkins calls, the collateral (附带的) damage of cancer—the damage left by the disease.
“In this blood test we don’t measure the presence of cancer,we measure the presence of mutated red blood cells which are the collateral damage that occurs—a by-product of the cancer developing.’’
The researchers used normal laboratory equipment to perform the tests. This equipment looks for changes in the structure of millions of red blood cells. Those mutated cells lack a surface protein (蛋白质) that healthy cells normally have.
“The goal of the test is looking for very rare cells which have picked up a mutation. The number of mutated red blood cells in a healthy person is around 5 or so mutated cells per million; so, you have to look at millions of red blood cells to discover those rare events. The number increases in cancer patients—it goes up to 40 or 50 on average.”
The researchers tested blood from about 300 people, all of whom have cancer of the esophagus (食管). Patients with esophageal cancer have high levels of mutated red blood cells. Jenkins says that at this point he is not sure if other cancers would produce similar results.
The hope is that the new test could one day become part of commonly used medical methods to find out if a person has cancer. These new technologies could save millions of lives.
