21、A Pen That Draws in Any Color

The Scribble is a magical pen that can scan colors and instantly reproduce the colors. Hold the Scribble’s scanner up to any color, and within a second that color is stored in its memory. Once stored, that color can be used to draw on paper or on a digital screen.

Who can use the Scribble ?

Children will love the Scribble because it can create different colors, replacing even their biggest box of crayons (蜡笔). Besides, anyone working with color in their professional lives, such as artists, will be able to scan and reproduce colors instantly.

The Scribble is the best color—Green

One of the most important characteristics of the Scribble is that, since it can reproduce any color, it replaces marking pens, greatly reducing the huge amount of plastic waste.

What’ s inside the Scribble ?

There will be two different versions of the Scribble, the Scribble INK and the Scribble STYLUS. The INK will be able to reproduce exact colors on paper. It includes a color sensor, 1 GB of internal memory that will store over 100,000 colors, a rechargeable battery, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, a processor and 5 ink cartridges (盒). The STYLUS is exactly the same as the INK, minus the ink cartridge as it is intended for use on screen.

How did we create the Scribble?

We’ve been in the design process for two years and the Scribble has gone through various design changes to get it to where we are now. Because of its small size we have created some ideas never seen before in the color reproduction industry. We created the Scribble for YOU and want you to be a part of the process!

22、   If a president, a philosopher, and one of the best-selling writers credited the same secret for their success, would you try to follow it too? What if the secret was something you already knew how to do? In fact, you probably do it every day. Here’s what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote: “It is only ideas gained from walking that have any worth.” Thomas Jefferson: “Walking is the best possible exercise.” Charles Dickens: “If I could not walk far and fast, I think I should just explode and die.”

Researchers have found quite a lot of connections between walking and producing ideas. A Stanford University study found that participants were 81 percent more creative when walking as opposed to sitting. According to the study, walking outside-compared with on a treadmill(跑步机)-produces the most novel and highest-quality ideas.

The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. Our creative thinking is triggered(触发) by physical movement, which is exactly why walking-with your dog, a friend, or alone - feeds creative thinking.

The scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Breaking your routine with a walk can be a catalyst for fresh understanding of problems or projects. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your familiar surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighborhood. You can walk through a park and observe people joking or birds singing. Being inside, you’re more likely to be lifeless, which means you don’t have enough energy to wonder or create.

So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking? Involve yourself more closely in your surroundings. Turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a puddle(小水坑).

【1】How does the author introduce the topic?

A.By providing background.

B.By borrowing phrases from great minds.

C.By giving definition.

D.By presenting well-known examples.

【2】what does the underlined word “catalyst” in paragraph 4 mean?

A.Promoter.

B.Cure.

C.Hope.

D.Must.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Nature exploration improves fitness.

B.Walking on a treadmill brings more energy.

C.Working indoors makes people less creative.

D.Familiar surroundings encourage novel ideas.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Exercise in Nature.

B.Train Your Brain.

C.Develop Your Creativity.

D.Walk for Wonder.

23、   Ida Nelson and her sister were relaxing and enjoying themselves in the sauna (桑拿室) when she heard a series of long low sounds from a small airplane circling the nearby airport.

It was 11:30 at night in the Alaskan village of Igiugig, population 70, and, as she told the reporter, “Any time a plane flies over that late, you know something is wrong.”

Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem: The airport’s runway lights were out.

Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her ATV, and floored it to the airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights manually.

“Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up,” Nelson told KTOO out of Juneau. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned of the plane’s urgent mission: It was a medevac (医疗救护直升机), there to transport a seriously ill local girl to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in Anchorage.

Nelson had a plan. Driving her ATV to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed, so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village—32 of them.

Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas (睡衣). Following directions from the medevac pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway.

The medevac made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient was loaded onto the aircraft, and the plane immediately took off again. Her illness was never publicly revealed, but she has since been released from the hospital.

In a world filled with uncertainty, the little community’s positive activism was a big deal. Not so much for Nelson. As she told the reporter, in Igiugig, coming together “is kind of a normal deal.”

【1】What problem did the medevac have?

A.It arrived late.

B.Its lights were broken.

C.It couldn’t land safely.

D.It needed a local pilot.

【2】What was Nelson’s plan to help?

A.Helping the pilot to repair the lights.

B.Calling her neighbors to help together.

C.Shining the headlights for the plane to follow.

D.Sending the seriously ill girl to the hospital in her ATV.

【3】What does the story intend to tell us?

A.Knowledge starts with practice.

B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

C.Nothing is impossible to the man who will try.

D.A small act of kindness can make a big difference.

24、   Rubbish is a major kind of environmental pollution. Each person produces about two kilograms of rubbish in our homes a day. And this is only a small part of all the rubbish we produce. We also create waste in industry.

Have you wondered what happens to the rubbish? Most of it is buried in landfills (垃圾填埋地) or burned. Less than 25% of our waste is recycled.

A landfill is carefully designed and it is built into or on top of the ground. Rubbish buried in landfills is cut off from the surrounding environment (groundwater, air, rain, etc).

One problem with landfills is that they cover a lot of land space. If they are not well-built, there is a high risk of polluting the land and water. Some people also say that landfills remove materials for ever. As a result, the materials that can be reused are wasted.

Burning rubbish in factories is another way to cut out waste. Burning reduces 95% of the waste. And if poisonous materials are removed, and burning is completed at controlled temperatures, it is possible to do so without causing too much pollution. Some factories could even produce electricity from the burning process.

Not all of the rubbish can be burned, so we have to separate it before we burn it. However, separation costs a lot of money. Another problem with burning rubbish is that what is left after burning is poisonous. How to safely deal with it is a continuing problem.

Before the mid-20th century, landfills were the main way to deal with waste. In the late 20th century, other ways like recycling have been introduced to help reduce global pollution.

Maybe in the near future, with combined efforts, scientists will find a better way to dispose rubbish and cut out waste, like recycling things. But anyway, mountains of rubbish from life every day is a huge burden for any country.

1What is the advantage of burying rubbish in landfills?

A.Producing electricity.

B.Reusing the materials buried in landfills.

C.Reducing 95% of the waste.

D.Cutting off rubbish from the surrounding environment.

2Paragraph 6 is mainly about _________.

A.the separation of rubbish B.the problems with burning rubbish

C.the safety of burning rubbish D.the cost of burning rubbish

3It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A.rubbish should be separated when it is burning
