二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In recent years, a lot of “business thinking” books have been published, all of which search for new answers on how to run organizations effectively. Obliquity tells us that the most profitable companies are not the most aggressive in chasing profits. Wikinomics demonstrates new models of production based on community and collaboration. Peter Miller’s new book, Smart Swarm, however, challenge leaders to think differently. He studied creatures, like bees and ants and he found their habits, actions and instincts can be applied to business. Miller believes his book is the first time anyone has explained the science behind management theory. “The examples of how ant colonies (蚁群) or beehives (蜂窝) work are appealing models for organizations and systems that can be applied in a business context,” he says.

So how exactly can bees help run organizations? “By the way they work independently before they work together,” Miller says. “Picture a huge beehive hanging on a tree, with about 5,000 bees competing for space. They know their population is getting too big, leaving them unsafe. They must all agree to find a new home. In today’s business environment, managers need to be able to make the right decisions under intense pressure. Yet, it is clear that some of the best-paid leaders in some of the biggest organizations can get it dramatically wrong. How is it that they can fail to make efficient business decisions when a large group of bees can make a critical decision about their hive in just a few seconds?”

According to Miller, “swarm theory” can help managers in three simple steps: discover, test and evaluate. The bees first realize they have a problem. They then fly into the neighborhood to find potential new sites. They come back and perform a “dance” to get other bees to follow them. Eventually, the bees with the best dance attract the most votes – and a decision is made. Miller says. “The bee example tells you that you need to seek out diversity in your team. You need to have a way of gathering up quite different ideas so you can make sure you pick the right one.”

Ants, in addition, can help businesses organize workflow and people. In an ant colony, there is no leader. Ants are self-organized, and respond to their environment and each other. One ant on its own could not raid (袭击) a kitchen cupboard, but one ant telling the next one that it’s worth following him to find food ends up creating a food chain. “In an ant colony, you get the right number going in and out searching for food, you get the right number taking care of the babies,” Miller says. “As a manager, this can tell you that your hierarchy (等级制度) is getting in the way of getting the work done.”

A.regard decision-making as a cooperative process

B.persuade others to follow your ways of thinking

C.accept different ideas and keep them balanced

D.pick out a right person to make the final decision

【4】Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?

22、   Indonesian university student Tyas Sisianindita spends about eight hours a day on her phone. That time includes watching videos, chatting with friends and using social media. "At night, when I can't sleep, I can use my phone for up to five hours," she said, noting she checks her phone countless times from morning until night. She even checks it while in class.

Tyas goes to the University of Indonesia, where a team of students recently developed a device meant to fight phone addiction. The students spent three months creating the device, which can help internet users like Tyas diminish time they spend looking at their phones.

Inventor Irfan Budi Satria led the development team. The device is called “Nettox", which combines the words “internet" and "detox (排毒)". Users wear it on their arm. The device has a sensor that measures hemoglobin (红蛋白) oxygen levels and changes to the heart rate called HRV. Studies have found that using a mobile phone for long hours can lower HRV levels. The Nettox device makes a sound when HRV and blood oxygen levels fall, which reminds wearers to stop using their phones.

For people between the ages of 18 and 25, the HRV should stay above 60. At a recent trial, Tyas' HRV reading was 44.

Internet addiction is a growing social issue in Indonesia. In October, two teenagers were treated for their addiction to internet gaming, media reported.

Irfan Budi Satria's team is working to improve Nettox's accuracy. HRV readings can change depending on whether the user is a man or woman, and what their body shape and health conditions are.

The team aims to get a patent for their invention with the university by next year. Irfan says Nettox is for people already trying to change their behavior. "Our goal is to help people who want to free themselves from internet addiction," he said.

23、Jose Alberto Gutierrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the trash 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing books that were thrown away. It lit his desire to start rescuing books from the trash. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning after his nine-hour shift that ran from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low income families.

Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 13 million residents and 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutierrez’s library is true representation of how one man’s trash can be another’s treasure. Having access to a library of books and being taken away instantly to another world while absorbed in a book is a luxury for the kids. “I think we are simply a bridge between people who have books and those who don’t have anything,” he said humbly about his remarkable attempt.

Gutierrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was an eager reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutierrez, who never let a lack of formal education stop him from reading classics. He once said, “There’s nothing more beautiful than having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car.”

Today, his library, titled “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of his home, and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. He has also roped in his family to expand this mission. Mrs Gutierrez, for example, selects and repairs the books her husband finds.

As word began to spread about his amazing project, fifty-six-year-old Gutierrez earned himself the nickname “Lord of the Books”. In spite of all this, Gutierrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search bins for reading material.

A.A public librarian.

B.A professional driver.

24、   Two weeks ago, I had an amazing trip to my friend's house in Serawai. Serawai is the name of a sub-district in Sintang Regency, Indonesia.

At that time, I was warmly welcomed by peaceful green yard. My trip was full of unforgettable moments: great people, delicious food, new cultures. However, what left a remarkable impression on me was meeting up with my friend's dad, Fx. Ngawan. He is now working as an education supervisor in Sintang Regency.

At our first encounter, he looks like a typical Dayaknese man with dark skin. As he mentioned that he used to be an English teacher, we discovered we were a match! I am an English teacher myself. More importantly, he is a language enthusiast and a hyperpolyglot(超级多语者). During the talk, we often switched from one language to the other such as Indonesian, English, Javanese to Ahe. He is now fluent in at least 15 languages and most of them are local languages.

When he was assigned to be a teacher and education supervisor, he had to go all the way rom Serawai sub-district to Sintang Regency by motorcycle, riding about 170 km by motorcycle. The trip can take six hours if the day is bright and sunny. However, it is not uncommon for him to spend three to seven days for the journey if the raining season comes. Therefore, he has to stop at some villages if he can't continue the trip and meet up with people with so many different languages along the way. So, whenever he stops in a particular village, he learns a different language. For him, learning languages helps him to connect with people.

In our last talk, he highlighted(强调) the importance of learning languages. He hopes hat the younger generation in Indonesia start realizing that language is the gate to open up so many opportunities. Local languages are facing disappearance because more people are leaving it behind. When people stop speaking the languages, the knowledge and culture from that language will also disappear.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Learning languages isn't an easy job.

B.Young people don't grasp opportunities.

C.Local languages are being more important.

D.Languages and culture are closely related.
