26、   As people age, the body changes in all sorts of predictable ways. Brains can slow. Wounds take longer to recover. And sleep patterns (模式) shift, too. This can come as news to many, says Michael V. Vitiello, a psychologist at the University of Washington who is expert in sleep in aging.

The most noticeable—and often most annoying—changes are how sleep and wake-up times change and sleep gets lighter, often beginning in middle age. Gone are weekend sleep to 11 a.m. and the ability to sleep through a noisy garbage truck down the block. Older drivers take longer to fall asleep, and they wake up more often. They tend to stay in the deepest stages of sleep for less time than younger adults.

Studies have found that poor sleep can create a particular threat to older adults—Falls, depression and anxiety, problems with memory, and increased suicide (自杀) risk are among the effects of sleep issues in this population group that researchers have found. But scientists are still unsure why those risk connections exist.

What is clear is the connection between good sleep and psychological well-being in older adults. A 2010 study showed us that connection when it came to sleep quality, but sleep quantity didn't show the same effects.

Experts say this may be the key to understanding sleep as you age. If you're sleeping less, but don't feel negative effects out of bed, the changes you notice may just be normal age-related. If you experience a sudden change in your sleep, or poor sleep is affecting your daily life, changing your personality, or your bedmate says you stop breathing when you snore, that could be a sign of something more serious and it's worth visiting your doctor.

28、   In the Amazon rainforest of Venezuela，Yanomami hunter-gatherers exist on cassava, palm hearts and wild banana. They also hunt frogs and monkeys using techniques that would have been familiar to their ancestors 11,000 years ago. The extraordinary continuity of their culture, and the fact that some of the groups have had little contact with outsiders,led biologists to wonder whether the Yanomami might reveal what the human digestive system looked like before industrialization supplied the world with processed foods and antibiotics.

In 2009, researchers had a chance to find out in a previously unknown Yanomami village. Health workers collected fecal (排泄物的) and skin samples from about 30 villagers. When researchers cultured and analyzed microbes in the feces, the scientists discovered whole categories of bacteria that were absent from the guts (肠道) of people from industrialized countries. Even more striking, they found the microbial population in the average Westerner to be about half as diverse as the community inside these hunter-gatherers. The researchers realized that the microbes might have implications beyond basic science. People's microbial communities are believed to play a role in disorders like obesity, diabetes and Alzheimer's, which shorten lives and overburden health care systems. These disorders don't trouble these preindustrial Amerindians, however. So researchers want to learn which microbes protect them and figure out how to reintroduce them in modern societies. It has the potential to affect health more profoundly than the diseevery of the fabled Fountain of Youth.

But the opportunity might be more fleeting than youth itself. “The world is becoming urban so fast.” says microbiologist Maria Gloria, co-author of a 2015 study that reveals the Yanomami microbiome. “Our lifestyles are killing microbial diversity.” And although nobody has yet determined exactly what the Yanomami mystery bugs are doing, and how they improve an individual's health，she believes that scientists need to collect and preserve as many microbes as possible in anticipation of future breakthroughs. “We cannot afford to wait,” she says, “or we'll have lost the high diversity of the human microbiome of traditional peoples before we understand how to use the microbiome to improve health. ”

29、   If you read the news about honeybee survival, it’s all very confusing. The Hoover Institution’s Dr. Henry Miller notes “The reality is that honeybee populations are not declining. According to U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistics, the world’s honeybee population rose to 80 million colonies (群落) in 2011 from 50 million in1960.” Meanwhile Jennifer Sass of the Natural Resources Defense Council points out “The number of managed honeybee colonies in the U. S. has dropped from four million hives (蜂群) in 1970 to 2.5 million today.”

Surprisingly, both of these claims are correct. Miller points to the “global” commercial honeybee-hive count, which has grown considerably. Sass points to domestic colony numbers only, which have in fact declined.

Far more bees are farmed for making honey than for pollination (传粉) services. Since more honey is now made overseas than it was in the past, more hives are kept overseas, and fewer in the United States and Europe. And the global number of commercial hives and honey they produce has grown to meet the demands of an expanding world population. Such shifts offer no evidence of a honeybee hive crisis. They simply represent the market forces of supply and demand.

The FAO data also clarify that national or even regional declines in the size of the managed honeybee population cannot prove claims of a global pollinator decline or a pollination crisis. However, it emphasizes that solutions to those problems must be motivated locally, rather than globally.

Solutions will follow only if we take a non-subjective look at the issues, so we can address them appropriately rather than have a crisis mentality. As I highlight in a recent post for The Hill,a big part of the solution lies at the very local level: with the beekeepers, farmers, and communities that surround them.

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a picnic. The adults were surprised by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid physical contact with the young goose out of fear that it would stay with us and be lost to its family forever.

Hours passed, and night fell. With it came the coldness. The tiny little thing was walking around our yard and it was clear that the goose needed protection and warmth. At that point, we knew we had to help, аnd wе brоught hіm іntо оur bасk роrсh (门廊).

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to shoo (赶走) the goose to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to take him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. By then, the young goose had clearly decided we were his new family, so we had to give him a name. My sister Joanna called him Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. We also decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. Peeper slept in our back porch each night. My dad would clean all the goose droppings daily. He would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a loop (圈) around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.

Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving(感到悲伤),I couldn't help but look forward to the doves’   visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. I’d do the cooking and for a moment, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch(从头开始), though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
