26、 If you walk through a park, you may enjoy the scents(气味)of flowers, water and soil.If you are especially lucky, you will get to smell fresh-cut grass. It's a beloved scent that transports many people back to their childhood. But there's a dark side to that smell.Indeed,we are in love with the scent of fear.
Plants have many different chemical defenses. That smell is one of them,as the grass responds to an attack,signaling(向......示意)to the surrounding grass that danger is coming. The fresh,"green”scent of a just-mowed lawn is the lawn trying to save itself, says a story at science website Real-Clear Science.
The smell is produced by a mix of chemicals called green leaf volatiles(GLVs,绿叶挥发物).When the leafy plants are injured by animals eating them, people cutting them, or any other rough treatment-they give off GLVs into the air. These GLVs are a warning to neighbouring plants that their flowers might be removed,so they can move resources like sugar toward their roots and away from their flowers. This reduces a plant's potential losses and can help it grow back later.
The rush of GLVs does a few other things, too. One chemical helps to close the wound on the damaged plant.Others act as antibiotics(抗生素)and prevent bacterial infections.
Some GLVs may also react with animals that eat plants.Silke All-mann and Ian T.Baldwin, researchers from the University of Amsterdam,Netherlands, found that some caterpillars(毛虫)are changed by the GLV compounds(化合物)when they eat a tobacco plant.Tobacco makes the caterpillars more attractive to predators(捕食者).For the tobacco plants, this is like having an older brother come to beat up your bully(欺凌者).
Thankfully, nothing is coming to eat you when you mow the lawn.Instead,we human get treated to some great-smelling GLVs.One is a compound known as"cis-3-hexenal".This is the same chemical that gives strawberries their sweet scent.Similar compounds are also found in apples and olives.
"Just about all fresh vegetables have some GLV scents to them,"Baldwin told Live Science, and fruits may release the compounds as they soften."Throughout evolutionary history,we've used that information to know when something is ripe,"Baldwin said. Now we can use it to know when grass is frightened.

27、 The Chinese-American cartoonist Weng Chen has transformed her dreamlike life during the epidemic into comics, which have drawn attention from people in both the US and China. The creative mind records her true life in humorous satire, revealing her dilemmas and frustrations when confronting different COVID-19 responses from two cultural backgrounds.
The artist now lives in Seattle, the first city ravaged by the coronavirus in the US. And the first-known US case, from the Life Care Center in Kirkland, Washington, is only a 10-minute drive from her daughter’s school. Moreover, months earlier, she was already anxiously checking the news from her hometown of Wuhan, the hardest-hit city in China.
Washington state announced a stay-at-home order on March 23. However, her two children, ages 7 and 5, had spent three weeks at home already due to the suspension of classes in her school district. And if Weng’s experience is any measure, the multitasking between work and child care at home can prove challenging.
The students do have online courses from school, but it’s the parents’ duty to ensure their children carry out the study on the app. “The teacher will give assignments online, and the student can choose to complete or ignore them,” she said. “Even if you submitted your assignment, the teacher won’t review it. It’s pretty casual.”
As an Asian American, Weng is prudent about protection and naturally considers wearing a mask a necessity. In one of her strips, she listed several common circumstances for Asians to put on masks in daily life. In contrast, Americans instinctively say “nah” masks even when told they can safeguard against Ebola and HIV.①
After the face mask story was published on social media platforms abroad, comments trickled in, such as this one: “Some Americans use them for robbing 7/11 stores.”②
However, as the pandemic worsens in the US, Weng’s comics also chronicle Americans’ changing attitude when they finally come to realize the importance of social distancing, which, to some degree, is good news for her.
While acknowledging the deep-rooted stereotypes of Chinese in US society, Weng says “many incidents occurred because we don’t know each other”.③
The cartoonist said she frankly has no intention to justify or explain anything. “I like to draw my life. When people read my comics, they may think ‘we’re alike’,” she said. “Then they’d realize I am from China.” ④
【1】Which city was Weng Chen the Chinese American cartoonist born?
A.Shanghai. B.Wuhan
C.Jinan D.Beijing.

Elephant seals in funny-looking hats are helping NASA study climate science.
Equipped with specialized sensors that resemble tiny metal hats with antennae(大线),these seals are collecting data that's helping researchers track how heat moves through ocean currents. A team of climate scientists led by Lia Siegelman used this clever technique to track changes in temperature as the seal swam the icy waters of the Antarctic.
With the help of one particularly female seal, the researchers discovered that heat stored at the ocean's depths can sometimes get swirled(打旋)back up to the surface thanks to some deeply penetrating(穿透)currents. While researchers have known that these currents can ferry heat downward into the ocean's interior(内部),the new findings suggest the opposite is true as well-driving a process that can warm the sea's surface as well.
Siegelman thinks it's important to include this new information into existing climate models. Before seals entered the picture, scientists had a pretty limited view of what went on beneath the surface of the Southern Ocean. Here, temperatures can suddenly fall below-1℃,and thick sheets of sea ice block instruments from collecting data. All in all,it's a pretty unappealing area for underwater field work.
But none of that troubles southern elephant seals, which spend nine to ten months of each year at sea, swimming thousands of miles and diving up to half a mile beneath the ocean surface-usually about 80 times a day.
So Siegelman and her colleagues tagged a female elephant seal on the Kerguelen Islands. The researchers followed her 3,000-mile journey, during which she dived 6,333 times."Even when they sleep, they dive,"Siegelman said.“They float down like a leaf."
Combined with satellite images, the wealth of data the seal recovered gave Siegelman and her team a clearer picture than they'd ever been afforded before. It's probably safe to say that the significance of this was lost on the seal. But from the human perspective(观点),it's clear seals are filling in some massive gaps in knowledge.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?
Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 【1】 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.
In fact, planes 【2】 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.
When a 【3】 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 【4】, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 【5】 process.
Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.
Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 【6】.
That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 【7】, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.
And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 【8】. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 【9】, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.
But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.
Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.
Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 【10】 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.
In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 【1】 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.
Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 【2】.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 【3】 supporting.
The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 【4】 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 【5】.
If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 【6】 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 【7】 of all resources.
And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 【8】 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 【9】 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 【10】 human being.

Driving an electric car 【1】 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 【2】 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 【3】 petrol-driven vehicle.
The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone — two important 【4】 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.
It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 【5】. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 【6】 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.
Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often 【7】 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 【8】. Diesel cars are also more 【9】 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.
Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 【10】 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

It was late, about 10:15 p.m., when Janice Esposito arrived at the Bellport, New York, train station, jumped into her minivan and began the 20-minute drive home to her husband and seven-year-old son. She’s just returned from visiting her mother and had traveled the route so many times, she practically drove on autopilot: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then ----wham! Out of nowhere on that awful night of October 10, 2017, a car hit Esposito's minivan, forcing her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks. She sat in the minivan, injured but mostly just stunned(吓晕) by the impact and by the vehicle's airbags.
As it happened, Pete Dipinto was getting for bed. He'd just closed his book and was ready to sleep when he heard the loud noise of metal on metal and broken glass coming from not far outside his bedroom window. A volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64, never stopped to think. He grabbed a flashlight and, still in his pajamas(睡衣), ran out of the door. 'Any firefighter would have done what I did,' he said. 'We're always on duty.'
The first car he came upon, 2000 feet from his front yard, was the one that had hit Esposito. Once DiPinto concluded the driver was OK, he looked around and spotted Esposito's minivan straddling(横跨) the railroad tracks. And then he heard a shocking sound: the bells signaling an oncoming train.
'I see the headlight of the train. ' he said. DiPinto ran to Esposito's minivan and banged on the driver's side window. She just looked at him, her eyes unfocused. 'I don't know where I am,' she said. She seemed unhurt.
