26、Five Ways to Go Green and Save Green
Climate change is in the news. It seems like everyone's “going green.” We're glad you want to take action too. Luckily many of the steps we can take to stop climate change can make our lives better. Let's start now.
Save energy to save money.
Set your thermostat(恒温器)degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
【1】 As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heat the water.
Unplug (拔掉……的电源插头) electrical equipment when you're not using it.
Save water to save money.
Take shorter showers to reduce water use. This will lower your water and heating bills too.
Plant drought-tolerant (耐旱的) native plants in your garden. 【2】Find out about these plants in your area.
Fix a low-flow showerhead. They don't cost much and the water and energy savings can quickly pay back your money.
【3】
Walk or bike to work. This saves on gas and parking costs while improving your health and reducing your risk of being fat.
Eat smart.
If you eat meat, add one meatless meal a week. Meat costs a lot at the store and it's even more expensive when you consider the related environmental and health costs.
【4】Purchasing from local farmers keeps money in the local economy.
Avoid bottled water.
【5】
Use a water filter (过滤器) to make drinking water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive but it causes large amounts of container waste.
A.When speaking of something to eat, try local products whenever you can.
B.Our grandchildren and their children will thank us for living green.
C.Bring a reusable water bottle with you when traveling or at work.
D.Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible.
E.Less gas = more money and better health!
F.Move a little nearer to your work.
G.Many plants need little watering.
27、 With the electronics industry developing, electronic products have become ubiquitous (无处不在的)in today’s life. Meanwhile, there are more and more abandoned electronic products, commonly called e-waste. It’s estimated that the number will grow to more than 60 million tons by 2021.
What contributes to the sharp rise in e-waste? Technology is developing rapidly, covering almost every aspect of our lives. Meanwhile, the lifespan of devices is getting shorter—many products will be thrown away once their batteries die. Companies intentionally plan the obsolescence (淘汰)of their goods by updating the design or software and discontinuing support for older models, so that it is usually cheaper and easier to buy a new product than to repair an old one.
What can we do about the growing e-waste problem? Recycling is very important and essential. As more people buy electronic equipment, producers are facing shortages of the raw materials, needed to make their products, so recycling and reusing e-waste makes economic and environmental sense.
Recycling e-waste is practiced both formally and informally. Formal e-waste recycling usually involves taking apart the electronics, sorting the materials and cleaning them. Companies must obey health and safety rules to reduce the health and environmental harm of handling e-waste by using: pollution-control technologies. All this makes formal recycling expensive. Informal recycling is typically, unlicensed and uncontrolled. At informal recycling workshops, people recover valuable materials burning devices to melt away non-valuable materials. Usually they do not wear protective equipment and lack any awareness that they are handling dangerous materials.
With the flood of e-waste growing around the world, recycling alone will not be enough to solve the problem. In order to reduce e-waste, producers need to design electronics that are safer, and more long-lasting, repairable and recyclable. The best thing we can do is to resist buying a new device until we really need it. Try to get our old product repaired if possible and, if it can't be fixed, resell or recycle it responsibly and correctly.
【1】What is the main idea of paragraph 2?
A.The causes of devices' price dropping.
B.The results of updating devices.
C.The methods of recycling e-waste.
D.The reasons for more and more e-waste.
【2】Why is recycling e-waste necessary according to the text?
A.To improve the poor quality of e-devices.
B.To lower the costs of technology innovation.
C.To relieve producers’ lack of materials.
D.To increase the variety of electronic products.
【3】What can we know about formal recycling workshops?
A.There are many rules and steps to follow.
B.They aim to get valuable materials by burning devices.
C.It is convenient for them to recycle e-waste.
D.They are unaware of the danger while handling e-waste.
【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.E-waste is easy to deal with by ourselves.
B.Producers should be mainly responsible for reducing e-waste.
C.Everyone should shoulder responsibility to help reduce e-waste.
D.Fixing a device could cause more pollution than buying a new one.
28、Modern medicine is pretty incredible. A team of scientists from the United States and Hong Kong has developed a “bionic eye” that imitates the human eye in shape and function, media BGR reported. The new “bionic eye” could one clay be used to restore the vision of the blind by imitating the “light sensor” in the human eye.
The eye is one of our most complex organs. In real eyes, the retina (视网膜) is the thin layer of tissue that receives light and sends it to our brains so it can be interpreted as an image. The bionic eye is an artificial eye which provides visual sensations to the brain. It consists of electronic systems having microprocessors, receivers, radio transmitters, some electronic chips and a series of image sensors that capture and rebroadcast real-time images. Technology provided by this helps the blind people to get vision again.
Over the years, scientists and doctors have come up with ways to replace some important parts of the body with artificial means that it can improve people’s quality of life and even save a person’s life. However, the eyes are quite special, and the way they communicate with the brain means that designing a bionic eye is not that simple. Connecting devices to the human brain is a huge barrier, but there is no greater challenge for researchers than cramming (塞入) the technology into a ball that could be used as an implant. And yes, the shape of the retina has historically been a major challenge for bionic devices.
Researchers have begun experimenting with animals and humans, the Daily Mail reported. However, much remains to be done. An artificial replacement for a human body is a risky task as it may cause death or some serious situations may occur and scientists were quick to point out that the current equipment is just the beginning that may appear in a few years.
【1】How does bionic eye work?
A.By receiving special signals.
B.By capturing and storing images.
C.By sending visual signals to the brain.
D.By receiving and increasing light intensity.
【2】What is the highest difficulty of making a bionic eye?
A.Its shape.
B.Its size.
C.Its weight.
D.Its sensitivity.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The research is an easy job.
B.The “bionic eye” is impossible.
C.The current equipment is quite perfect.
D.Testing has begun on live organisms.
【4】What is the text mainly about?
A.Modern medicine.
B.New technology.
C.Blind people.
D.Human brain.
29、The famous pilot Jackie Cochran was born in the south as Bessie Lee Pittman. Her family was so poor that Cochran often had to do without basic necessities. In her autobiography, she wrote that she did not own a pair of shoes until she was eight years old and that she wore dresses made of flour sacks. Fortunately, Cochran was taken under the wing of a beauty-shop owner when she was only a child and quickly mastered her craft. By the time she was 13, Cochran was cutting hair full-time.
Cochran was determined to make a better life for herself and to help others who had been forced to live in poverty. Cochran recalled seeing three children living in horrible conditions. “There I was with neither the strength nor the money to do the smallest fraction of what needed to be done to make those lives better,” she said. By giving people new haircuts, she felt that she could at least make people happy for a while but she wanted to do much more.
When she was only 15, Cochran moved to New York City, where there were better-paying jobs. She worked as a hairstylist and her services were soon in demand. At this time, she changed her name to Jackie Cochran, a name she felt better suited her new occupation.
In time, Cochran was hired at a salon in the Saks Fifth Avenue department store. This job paid very well and Cochran became immensely popular among her customers. Some of them even paid her to travel with them! It was during one of these trips that she met Floyd Bostwick Odlum, a man who would later become her husband. Cochran told Odlum that she dreamed of starting her own cosmetics company, and he supported her. While she did not have a formal education, Cochran was a quick learner and had a keen business sense. Her husband encouraged her to learn to fly a plane. He thought that this was the best way for her to travel from coast to coast selling her cosmetics. If she learned to fly a plane, she could travel much more quickly than her competitors.
After only three weeks of instruction, Cochran was granted her pilot’s license, and she was completely attracted! She later said that, after flying for the first time, her career as a beautician officially ended and her career as a pilot began. She had discovered that flying was her true passion. While she continued to run her company, she competed in flying contests. She placed first in the women’s division of the Bendix Race, an important flying contest, and third overall. In time, she set a national airspeed record. She flew from New York to Miami in four hours, 12 minutes, and 27 seconds-over 204 miles an hour!
Cochran sought to help American troops during World War II. She believed that, if more women learned to fly, they could take the places of male pilots who were needed to fight in the war. She presented her idea to the U.S. government, and government officials asked her to lead the Women’s air Force Service Pilots, more commonly called the WASP. Over one thousand WASP flew planes overseas, where these planes could be used in the war. They tested new planes and supported the military by carrying supplies. Cochran became the first woman who had not been enlisted in the service to be awarded the U.S. Distinguished Service Medal.
After this, Cochran continued setting flying records for both speed and height. In 1953, she became the first woman to break the sound barrier, which meant that she had flown faster than the speed of sound. Throughout her life, Cochran received hundreds of awards. She used her wealth and fame to help many people improve their lives and reach their goals. Jackie Cochran wrote that, while she had been born with nothing, she “was determined to travel with the wind and the stars.”

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
In Congress, July 4, 1776
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d【1】 the causes which impel them to the separation.

36、
Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?
Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 【1】 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 【2】.
This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 【3】 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role.
