26、 On the night of August 24, 2001, my last night of freedom before my freshman of high school started, everything changed when my friend's car hit a guardrail(护栏) with me inside.
I lost most of my right leg. At the hospital, I just kept telling myself to hold on. Weeks later I made a deal with the hospital staff that once I could roll onto my side, I could be discharged. I am proud to say that just one short week later, I was going home. The day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to never give up and to always live life to the fullest.
In February of 2013, my life was forever changed when I attended the Executive Assistant Organization's Behind Every Leader event. During the conference, a sweet lady by the name of Alisson Frew dared to ask me why I did not wear a prosthesis(假肢). My short and simple answer was, "I don't have sixty thousand dollars." The next morning I was in tears as I learned that Alisson, Jeff Hoffman, founder of Priceline, and a dozen other people, had bought a prosthesis for me. From the first step, it was apparent to me just how much this would mean to me.
For a year I adjusted to the leg and settled into everyday life, until one day I realized I was making a life but not living one. After almost 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I was empowered! I desired to help those around me, to have them experience this unbelievable feeling for themselves.
In April of 2014, I started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me on a poster at her favourite clothing store and say, "Wow, she is amazing, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability."

28、When I was growing up, Oprah was my favorite imaginary auntie. She lived inside the TV and I looked forward to visiting her every day at 4 P.M. For one hour every Monday through Friday, I got to watch a Black woman command the airwaves and have control over the world. As a little black girl in a big White world, that was a powerful thing to witness—especially in a culture where girls like me seldom saw ourselves positively reflected in the media.
The kind of beauty celebrated around us had a way of making little black girls feel as if the bodies we were born into were somehow inferior. Apart from Auntie Oprah, the media’s portrayal of Black women was to a great extent limited in variety. Luckily, I had strong examples of women of color in my real life who watered the seeds that helped me believe I could dream beyond what I saw around me.
Fast-forward to two years ago, when I was appointed by longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to lead Teen Vogue. I thought I was just a girl getting her dream job. But then the headlines hit. Suddenly, I was a Black woman making history. At 29 I had become only the second Black person and the youngest ever to helm (掌舵) a Condé Nast magazine.
Shonda Rhimes, Hollywood supreme black screenwriter, coined the term “First. Only. Different.” Being an FOD in your filed comes with a responsibility and an opportunity to rewrite the rules, to redefine standards, to represent for your communities. In my new position, I had an opportunity to help ensure that little black girls would never doubt their value. I was able to help undo some of the damaging accounts by changing the pages of the magazine to make them more reflective of my world.
My first book, More Than Enough, is not a career guide, because I believe only you can write your own blueprint for success, but I do share some of the hard-earned lessons that I am still learning to live by. My book is not intended as self-help but a love letter to anyone who has ever felt overlooked, overwhelmed, underestimated and undervalued—and who still chose to overcome.
My story, as it’s played out so far, is for all my fellow people of color out there, standing proudly as First, Only and Different. I am writing with love to all those who know what it is to be the lone Black voice in the room, because my story is your story. Trust that you will find your own rhythm and carve out a space to succeed in your own lane. I am also speaking up for anyone in her dream job, facing the barriers no one talks about. When you exist in spaces that weren’t originally built for you, remember that sometimes, just being you is the revolution. And this is especially for the ones who are Next Up, those of you who are responsible for taking the same systems that my generation is now breaking down and building better ones.
As you continue crafting the life you want, I hope you will always bear in mind that it is the very things you underestimate about yourself that will help you to create your own magic. Find it. Use it. Trust it. We spend too much time telling ourselves that we are not enough. Not smart enough. Not beautiful enough. Not successful enough. Not young enough. Not old enough. I want to be the voice reminding you to say “Enough!” to all that. You are enough. You were born enough.
The world is waiting for you. Let’s go.

29、 A study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important . These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs. Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion (万亿) connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.
Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at distinguishing different sound patterns. Her researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba. This is the pattern “A-B-B". Another order was mu-ba-ge. This is the pattern “A-B-C”. The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the “A-B-B” pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive to where it occurred in the order.
Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the building block of words and grammar. “Position is key to language," she says. “If something is at the beginning or at the end, it makes a big difference: ‘John caught the bear.’ is very different from ‘The bear caught John.’ ”
Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet, or smartphones-no matter how educational-doesn’t appear to be enough for children’s brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who’d watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to-face with the same sounds. Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies -regardless of whether they had watched the video or listened to the audio-learned nothing.
【1】What makes connections in a baby’s brain?
A. Having a higher IQ. B. The connection with other babies.
C. The baby’s early age. D. Experiencing new information.
【2】What did Judit Gervain and her team find in the experiment?
A. Word order is relevant to meaning. B. Babies identify different sound patterns.
C. A certain brain region processes language. D. Babies can well understand different words.

A. Words have different sounds.
B. Grammar is important in learning languages
C. Different orders have different meanings.
D. Different languages have different grammar.

A. Babies shouldn’t watch a lot of television.
B. Social communication improves babies’ brain development.
C. Listening to different languages helps to develop babies’ brain
D. Foreign languages are beneficial to babies’ brain development

32、The secret to a successful sequel(续集)—a secret
Keeping the entire cast and crew of a film a secret is hard. But when it’s a massive movie like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, with some 700 people and 1,000 costumes—including 400 coats alone—it’s next to _________. All precautions are taken: characters are given code names, the smallest details are protected by nondisclosure agreements, and digital scripts are encoded and _________ after a certain amount of time in case of being copied and spread. It’s not quite magic, but it’s close.
The pressure to not reveal anything—even _________—is enough to give Eddie Redmayne a difficult time. “I’ve been sent this funny document which is _________ with double-caps, triple-underlined notes saying, YOU CAN’T TALK ABOUT THIS,” says the Oscar winner, who returns as wizard Newt Scamander in the sequel, which continues the story of the earlier _________. How have they successfully kept it a secret? It certainly helps that J. K. Rowling, the writer of the work, is the _________ of keeping secrets. Also, Johnny Depp’s _________ appearance in the movie—the actor has been accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard—as the dark wizard Grindelwald was kept under _________ until just two weeks before the first film came out in 2016.
Bearing this commitment to secrecy in mind, it’s no surprise that Rowling has ____________ the details to few people about how the ____________ three movies in the proposed five-part series will playout. Even producer Tim Lewis, who has worked on eight Harry Potter installments, is ____________. “We haven’t seen scripts for the next one,” he says. “I am assuming Rowling knows the whole plan, but I couldn’t say.”
The earnings are high enough: the first Fantastic Beasts movie reached $814 million. That’s a number most studios would ____________, but when it comes to Harry Potter, expectations start sky-high. In a world filled with universes based on existing intellectual property—Star Wars, Marvel—appreciation fatigue is always possible. But for now, the extreme enthusiasm shows no sign of____________: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a play based on an idea by Rowling, is a critical and commercial____________. 34、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?
Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 【1】 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.
In fact, planes 【2】 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.
When a 【3】 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 【4】, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 【5】 process.
Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.
Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 【6】.
That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 【7】, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.
And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 【8】. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 【9】, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.
But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.
Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.
Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 【10】 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.
In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

40、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Leeches as Medical Treatment
Leeches are small wormlike creatures that live in water and suck the blood of animals and humans. In the past, though, leeches were commonly used in medicine. Then advances in science led to other kinds of treatments, and leeches disappeared from the sick room. Now, however, they are making a comeback.
The use of leeches in medicine goes back at least 2,500 years. Doctors used them to treat the sick in ancient Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. It was believed in those days that taking blood from patients helped to bring their bodies back into balance. This belief and the practice of draining blood with leeches continued through the ages.
Another use of leeches has been investigated by a team of German doctors who study the ability of leeches to reduce pain. Their patients suffer from arthritis, a painful joint disease that often affects knees, shoulders, or fingers. When the German doctors put leeches on the arthritic knees of their patients, almost all of them felt immediate relief from the pain. Most of the patients continued to be pain-free for over a month and some for as long as six months.
Leeches have also proved indirectly useful in treating patients with heart and blood diseases. Since the 1880s, researchers have understood that certain chemicals in. leeches prevent blood from clotting or becoming hard. Many people with heart or blood problems live with a serious risk of the formation of blood clots, which can travel through the blood to the heart or brain and cause death. In the 1950s, a scientist identified the chemical in a leech that prevents clotting. Later studies led to experiments with the chemical and the development of a drug that thins the blood of patients who are at risk for blood clots.
Though doctors today do not view the use of leeches as the all-purpose treatment it once was, they now see that for certain problems, this ancient remedy may be valid after all.
