二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   Even as Google plans to test its fleet (车队) of self-driving cars on public roads this summer, its business model remains a bit of a mystery. By 2025, as many as 250, 000 self-driving vehicles could be sold each year globally, according to a study by an industry research firm.

“Vehicles that can take anyone from A to B at the push of a button could transform mobility for millions of people, ” said Chris Urmson, director of Google’s self-driving car project. For now, Google has no plans to sell any of its self-driving cars. They are strictly for research. But they will hit public roads this summer near Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California. Previous testing has taken place only on closed courses.

The cars are built to operate without a steering wheel, accelerator or brake pedal. “Our software and sensors do all the work, ” Urmson said. “the vehicles will be very basic — we want to learn from them and adapt them as quickly as possible — but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button. ” The prototype (雏形)  are the first of a 100-car fleet the tech giant is building.

In the long run, Urmson sees a future of safer roads —the majority of auto accidents are caused by human error —and fewer traffic jams. Robotic cars could also shuttle people who can’t drive because of age or illness.

Google has said that self-driving cars could launch new business models in which people buy the use of vehicles they don’t own. The company has already tested other types of self-driving cars on public streets, including modified Lexus sport-utility vehicles, under a special permit program by the California Department of Motor Vehicles that requires a human driver at the controls.

The state has issued six other companies permits to operate such cars, including Delphi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Tesla, Bosch and Nissan. The vehicles that will be tested on open roads this summer will have removable steering wheels, accelerators and brake pedals to allow “safety drivers” to take control if needed. Google says the cars are safe. The vehicles have sensors that “can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions, which is especially helpful on busy streets with lots of intersections, ” Urmson said. “We’re looking forward to learning how the community understands and interacts with the vehicles, and to uncovering challenges that are unique to a fully self-driving vehicle, ” Urmson said.

1The passage informs us that self-driving cars .

A.have already passed necessary tests

B.will probably decrease traffic jams

C.have been purchased by some companies

D.will keep the drivers in good sprits

C.Google’s Self-driving Car Graduates to City Streets

D.Google’s Self-driving Car Enjoys Global Popularity

27、Many companies employ some form of ranking systems to assess employees’ performance, and then determine promotion accordingly. Performance rankings don’t necessarily involve competition for physical or financial resources, but they do create competition for another kind of resource: social status.

To better understand how social status ranking affects men and women differently, my colleagues and I conducted a series of lab experiments. The participants were asked to complete simple tasks and they were told that they would receive one Euro for each task they completed. This meant they were all equally rewarded, and were thus not competing for financial resources. Then, we told one group of participants that they would be ranked against each other based on their performance, while participants in the other group weren’t told anything.

We found that just anticipating that they would be ranked significantly impacted participants’ performance, and that the impact was noticeably different for men and for women. When participants weren’t told that they’d be ranked, men and women performed at essentially the same level. But when they were told that they would be ranked, men performed better than those who weren’t told anything, while women performed a lot worse.

It’s also found that the gender difference caused by competitive environments isn’t simply because of the misconception that women are naturally less competitive than men. Rather, these environments trigger the assumption that men are superior and that women should be kind to others. And it in turn leads to gender differences in performance.

In sum, these findings suggest that competitive social ranking systems can have a major effect on performance, and more importantly, they can have very different effects on men and on women. It’s hard to imagine a world in which competition is removed entirely —so how can organizations get the benefits of competitive environments while providing a fairer environment for their female employees?

【1】Performance rankings certainly involve competition for ________.

A.financial reward

B.social status

C.physical resources

D.higher income

【2】What can we learn from the lab experiments?

A.The effect of ranking differed for men and women.

B.Participants would be financially rewarded differently.

C.Both groups of participants knew they would be ranked.

D.Women would perform better if they knew they’d be ranked.

【3】What may cause gender differences in performance?

A.The competitive environments caused by social prejudice.

B.The belief that men are better and that women should be kind.

C.The misconception that women are trained to be less competitive.

D.The fact that the ranking system treats men and women differently.

【4】What may be talked about next?

A.How gender inequality can be removed for good.

B.How organizations get more benefits of gender equality.

C.How to provide a fairer environment for female employees.

D.How to conduct an accurate study about working performance.

28、   Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.

My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.

I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.

I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.

1Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?

A.Start the car the moment everyone is seated.

B.Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.

C.Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.

D.Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.

2The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ___________.

A.keep her appointment with the eye doctor

B.meet her father who was already an old man

C.join in the holiday celebration of the company

D.finish her work before the deadline approached

29、   “A blue whale's heart is as big as a Volkswagen Beetle(大众甲壳虫),” I told a group of wide-eyed, open-mouthed second-graders. “It is so big that you could walk around inside of it.” Then I asked a big question-“Why does a blue whale have such a big heart?”and let the adventure begin.

I was bringing SOLE to my classroom-the Self-Organized Learning Environment.

My students began their investigations and, after 40 minutes, they shared their discoveries.

“Blue whales can call to each other over almost a thousand miles.” said Heavenly. “They need a big heart to talk to each other.”

“They swim all over the world,” said Ki'ara. “So they need a big heart to be their motor.”

“They swim together in pairs.” said Amare. “So they need huge hearts to care for each other.”

“Yeah,” said Isaac. “That's true. It takes a huge heart to care for somebody.”

“Hmmm,” I said. “How can we have big hearts for each other instead of small hearts?”

Then the students made a list of it.

I was teaching compassionto model ways we can care for each other and other living things. This SOLE lesson took a beautiful turn when Amaze connected the heart of the blue whale to community and to caring.

Perri Klass, in a brief essay for the New York Times titled “Understanding How Children Develop Compassion”, writes about the importance of modeling compassion to children so those things are part of their experience long before they know the word.

Around my school, however, nine out of 10 families live in a destructive poverty that makes it difficult to model compassion, to nurture community and caring. My students often come to school knowing more about the survival of the fittest than the survival of the kindest. Yet here were my 7 and 8-year-olds working together in a community, talking about caring for each other and exploring ways we can have big hearts instead of small hearts for each other.

On that day, the blue whale and the second-graders modeled compassion for all of us. This SOLE lesson brought heart to my classroom.

1How did the students get the answer in the SOLE class?

A.By looking at a blue whale. B.By finding the answer themselves.

C.By questioning each other. D.By taking a dangerous a trip.

2What was the list made by the students about?

A.The ways to care for each other. B.The ways to learn from each other.

C.The disadvantages of having small hearts. D.The importance of having big hearts.

3What does the underlined part “the survival of the fittest” imply?

A.The students were used to SOLE lessons. B.The students were mostly from poor families.

C.The students had too much to do at school. D.The students were fond of working together.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.SOLE Lessons-a Way to Care for Each Other

B.Discoveries about a Blue Whale's Heart

C.How Blue Whales Taught Children about Compassion

D.How Children Learned Science in SOLE Lessons

34、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.

While computer programs ow best the world’s leading human players of games like checkers and chess, the high level of intuition and 6required by Go has made it tough for computers to crack. DeepMind’s AlphaGo program is the most 7effort yet, using a complex system of deep neural networks and machine learning; it beat European champion Fan Hui last year, but Lee Se-dol is another 8 rival entirely.

“I don’t regret accepting this challenge,”said Lee.“I am in shock, I admit that, but what’s done is done. I enjoyed this game and look forward to the next.
