※ Damon, May 21,2019
The price is great with an extra $ 20 off and this new Kindle is smaller in my hands than my old one. I was sad to lose my old Kindle, but this one is terrific.
※ Jason, January 26, 2019
I miss the original Kindlers size - this one is too small. Also, the screen is overly sensitive and things pop up (弹出)and the battery doesn't last as long as the original Kindle. But my biggest disappointment is that this Kindle doesn't allow you to transfer everything from the original Kindle、so I lost all of the information from my old one. Overall, disappointing.
※ Susan, November 17, 2018
I had the original Kindle, and the battery lasted for weeks. This battery only seems to last a few days, however. The other problem I have with this version of the Kindle is the touch screen. 28、 Do you buy too many clothes? Or do you often buy new garments only to wear them once before throwing them away? Research shows that you are not alone; a recent survey in Australia has shown that roughly a quarter of Australians have thrown away a piece of clothing after wearing it just once.
Sarah Freeman was so shocked by these findings that she decided to do something about it. She has founded a “clothes library” in Sydney, where customers can rent clothing instead of purchasing it; this way, you can still only wear it once but without being wasteful.
Research suggests that global clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2014!
Clothes these days can sometimes only last two or three washes before they need to be replaced. Not only are these short- lasting clothes not good for your wallet, but they’re also terrible for the environment. The majority of these clothes are produced in third world countries, and their factories use up huge amounts of energy and pollute the waterways nearby.
Sarah's clothes library is a great way to get fantastic designer clothes at an affordable price, and it's also good for the environment. Compared with a regular clothing store, Sarah’s business hardly produces any waste. Customers can pay a monthly subscription fee and enjoy 4 to 6 pieces of clothing per month.
Sarah thinks that her clothes library can make a difference and hopes to see one in every shopping center. But will it catch on? Reading books that have been read by another person is one thing, but to wear clothes that have been worn by others is another even though great brands are available to rent.
The very similar Fashion Library in Amsterdam made news headlines in 2015, and others have sprung up in other places around the world as well.
【1】What problem of Australians is mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. Being enthusiastic about going after fashion
B. Storing piles of clothes in their cupboards.
C. Buying clothes regardless of their prices.
D. Being wasteful in dealing with clothes.
【2】What's talked about modern clothes in paragraph 3?
A. Why they last so short. B. Their fast development
C. Their harmful influences. D. What leads to their poor quality.
【3】What's the author’s opinion on the clothes library?
A. He/She thinks it'll be well accepted. B. He/She throws doubt on its popularity.
C. He/She believes it's of great necessity. D. He/She strongly opposes its wide spread.
【4】It can be inferred from the text that ______.
A. the clothes library concept isn't new
B. Sarah's clothes library is completely waste-free
C. designer clothes aren't available in Sarah's clothes library
D. customers can rent unlimited pieces of clothing every month
29、 Iceland is a large island. In fact, it’s the world’s 18th largest island. Most of the population, however, lives in the southwestern part of the country, in or around the capital city of Reykjavik. By its very name, you’d expect Iceland to be mostly ice. Looking at Iceland on a map, you’ll notice it sits just outside the Arctic Circle. Despite this location and its name, Iceland actually has a temperate climate, because it is warmed by the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream also helps keep Iceland’s coastal ports ice-free through the winter.
There is plenty of ice on Iceland, though. The country consists of a large plateau(高原)that includes fields of sand, mountains and glaciers. Over 60% of Iceland is tundra(苔原). About 14% of Iceland is lakes and glaciers. Only about 24% of the country has plants or vegetation of any kind, which covers a vast area in the south of the country.
Iceland was settled in the late 800s and early 900s by Norsemen from the Scandinavian country of Norway. Other settlers also came from Ireland and Scotland. From the 13th century up until 1918, Iceland was part of the Norwegian and later Danish monarchies. For most of that time, the small Icelandic population depended upon fishing and farming to make a living. For hundreds of years, Iceland was one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. After World War II, international aid and industrialization of the fishing industry turned Iceland into one of the wealthiest countries in the world. In 1994, Iceland became part of the European Economic Area(经济区), which allowed its economy to grow even more.
Iceland boasts one of the youngest islands in the world. Surtsey rose out of the ocean during a series of volcanic eruptions between 1963 and 1968. Today, only scientists who study the growth of new life can occasionally visit the volcanic island of Surtsey.

【2】What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph?
A.Iceland’s history.
B.Iceland’s geography.
C.Iceland’s economy.

【3】What can we infer about Surtsey from the last paragraph?
A.People live on fishing.
B.No human beings live there at all.
C.There are many visitors.
D.Science is developing fast there.

Driving an electric car 【1】 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 【2】 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 【3】 petrol-driven vehicle.
The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone — two important 【4】 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.
It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 【5】. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 【6】 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.
Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often 【7】 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 【8】. Diesel cars are also more 【9】 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.
Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 【10】 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to control theirs. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.
