二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   In recent years more and more Chinese schoolchildren are required to wear uniforms at school. Do American children wear school uniforms? In fact, American schoolchildren often wear uniforms if they attend religious or other private schools. Most public schools do not require uniforms. But over the last ten years or so, more of them have moved in that direction, including high schools. Another option is that students may just have to dress alike — for example, white shirts and dark colored pants or skirts. Even schools that do not require uniforms generally have a dress rule about what they consider acceptable. Schools commonly forbid clothing that shows images or words causing displeasure, or simply too much skin. Hats may be forbidden because, for example, different colors may be connected with bad guys.

Some parents like the idea of uniforms. Some say it means they do not have to spend much on clothing for their kids. Others, though, argue that uniforms represent an unnecessary cost.

There are also debates about whether uniforms or other dress rules go against civil rights. Students and parents have taken legal action against school dress requirements. Several years ago, a middle school was asked to stop its dress rule unless families had a way out of it. The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California brought the case for the families of several students who had been punished by the school. Most attention centered on a girl who wore socks with the Tigger character from Winnie the Pooh. The school said its clothing policy, including no pictures of any kind, was needed to control a growing problem with gangs. The families argued that the policy went against free speech rights as protected by the United States and California constitutions.

The United States Supreme Court says student expression is protected as long as it does not harm the work and the rule of a school. But some educators believe dressing alike helps improve student learning. They believe that uniforms help create a sense of unity and reduce the risk of fights. They also say uniforms make it easier for security reasons to tell if someone belongs to the school or not.

1According to the passage there is a trend in the USA that ______.

A. most public schools do not require uniforms

B. most public schools move in the direction of requiring uniforms at church

C. most schools require the students to be dressed in white shirts and dark colored pants

D. more and more schools have a dress rule about what are suitable for schoolchildren

2Which of the following is NOT a reaction mentioned to the dress rule?

A. Some parents like the rule which means they could spend less on clothing for the kids.

B. Some parents think the rule has nothing to do with them.

C. Some parents say that uniforms are an extra cost for them.

D. Some others argue that uniforms or other dress rules go against civil rights.

3What is the girl’s problem?

A. She brought her pet called Tigger to school.

B. She put Tigger into her socks in class.

C. She wore socks with pictures.

D. She had a problem with some gangs.

4School dress requirements can benefit schools and students except to help ______.

A. the court protect student expression

B. students focus on their studies

C. make a united effort to avoid fights

D. strengthen campus security

27、The first essay I wrote for my history of English class was perfect, at least from my perspective. I had worked on it constantly and couldn’t wait to get my grade back. I handed it in with pride.

Two weeks later, I received my grade: a D. The pages were covered in red writing, pointing out errors. There must have been a mistake.

University started later for me than most. The opportunity wasn’t available when I was younger — too many kids in our family and too little money. But I never stopped wondering what university would have been like. I was in my 40s when I sent in my application and as a part-time student, I will be in my 60s before I’m finished. That’s my goal.

What’s it like to be the old guy in a class full of 20-year-olds? It’s strange. They pretty much ignored me, and I ignored them. They also ignored each other. However, after we had more group work together, people started to communicate. Although I was an English major, some of my favorite classes were unrelated electives. Courses in art history and Greek and Roman history were fascinating. I was eager to do well.

I arranged a meeting to discuss my essay grade and arrived 10 minutes early to meet the teacher’s assistant. I was ready to argue for the brilliance of my paper. However, she quickly explained to me that the paper failed to make a strong argument. The mark remained.

While I kept studying and kept learning, I learned to love two dozen writers I had never heard of before and explored types of literature I had never examined. Eventually, I learned how to write an essay in proper academic prose.

University is different when you are a senior, part-time student. If you are there to establish a career or because your parents force you to go, there are other pressures. For me, it’s just learning. Whether I’m learning remotely or in person, it makes the world a bigger, richer place.

28、Songwriters

Before you can hear a song, a songwriter must imagine it. Some songwriters work alone, but many songwriting teams combine the talents of songwriters and composers. Pop music legend Elton John's best-known songs, including Tiny Dancer and Your Song, were written to accompany the lyrics(歌词)of Bernie Taupin, whose name you might not know.

Arrangers

After a song has been written, music arrangers make it more appealing by deciding which instruments will be used, what speed the song will have, and whether the song should have a lower or higher pitch(音调).

Recording Engineers

Recording engineers also play a major role in creating the final sound that you hear. First, they set up the recording studio, the room where the performers play. Next, they use electronic equipment to record the music. Finally, long after the musicians have gone home, they use a mixing board to balance the melody(旋律)of each musician.

Many people make a living with music. You may not recognize all of their names, but all of them work together to create the Songs you love to listen to.

1Why an Elon and Bernie mentioned in paragraph 1?

A.To explain how to compose a song.

B.To present the advantage of teamwork.

C.To serve as an example of a songwriting team.

D.To show the responsibilities of songwriting teams.

2What do music arrangers decide?

A.The lyrics. B.The instruments.

C.The recording studio. D.Harmony of the melody.

3What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To advertise some music CDs.

B.To get people involved in creating music.

29、   In the early 1960s Wilt Chamberlain was one of only three players in the National Basketball Association (NBA)listed at over seven feet. If he had played last season, however, he would have been one of 42. The bodies playing major professional sports have changed dramatically over the years, and managers have been more than willing to adjust team uniforms to fit the growing numbers of bigger, longer frames.

The trend in sports, though, may be obscuring an unrecognized reality: Americans have generally stopped growing. Though typically about two inches taller now than 140 years ago, today's people-especially those born to families who have lived in the U. S. for many generations-apparently reached their limit in the early 1960s. And they aren't likely to get any taller. "In the general population today, at this genetic, environmental level, we've pretty much gone as far as we can go," says anthropologist William Cameron Chum-lea of Wright State University. In the case of NBA players, their increase in height appears to result from the increasingly common practice of recruiting players from all over the world.

Growth, which rarely continues beyond the age of 20, demands calories and nutrients-notably, protein--to feed expanding tissues. At the start of the 20th century, under-nutrition and childhood infections got in the way. But as diet and health improved, children and adolescents have, on average, increased in height by about an inch and a half every 20 years, a pattern known as the secular trend in height. Yet according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, average height--5 '9" for men, 5'4" for women--hasn't really changed since 1960.

Genetic maximums can change, but don't expect this to happen soon. Claire C. Gordon, senior anthropologist at the Army Research Center in Natick, Mass ensures that 90 percent of the uniforms and workstations fit recruits without alteration. She says that, unlike those for basketball, the length of military uniforms has not changed for some time. And if you need to predict human height in the near future to design a piece of equipment, Gordon says that by and large, "you could use today's data and feel fairly confident."

1Wilt Chamberlain is cited as an example to_________.

A.illustrate the change of height of NBA players.

B.show the popularity of NBA players in the U.S..

C.compare different generations of NBA players.

D.assess the achievements of famous NBA players.

2Which of the following plays a key role in body growth according to the text?

A.Genetic modification. B.Living standards.

C.Natural environment. D.Daily exercise.

3We learn from the last paragraph that in the near future__________.

A.the garment industry will reconsider the uniform size.

B.the design of military uniforms will remain unchanged.

C.genetic testing will be employed in selecting sportsmen.

D.the existing data of human height will still be applicable.

4The text intends to tell us that__________.

A.the change of human height follows a cyclic pattern.

B.human height is becoming even more predictable.

C.Americans have reached their genetic growth limit.

D.the genetic pattern of Americans has altered.

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

40、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

The World Health Organization, or WHO, estimates that more than 300,000 women die every year during pregnancy or childbirth. Each year, about 2.6 million babies are born dead and another 2.7 million babies die during the first 28 days of life, it said. Most of the deaths are taking place in South Asia and in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert.

Many of the deaths could have been avoided with quality health care, WHO officials said. Some stillbirths (births of dead babies), infant (new-born baby) deaths or deaths of mothers result from complications (并发症) during childbirth. Others may result from health problems with the mother. A poor diet or using drugs may also be to blame, the WHO added.

Another problem is that nearly all babies who are stillborn and half of all newborn deaths are never documented. Those deaths are not reported to or investigated by government health agencies. Traditions and beliefs often affect the collection of important records about infant deaths. In many countries, there is a belief that a stillbirth may not represent a lost life. Officials said this means the actual number of stillborn and newborn deaths is probably even higher than the WHO’s own current estimates. The United Nations agency says the lack of information makes it harder to find solutions. It is important for all births and deaths to be recorded so that health officials can make better decisions on how to prevent future deaths.

The WHO released three reports earlier this month to help health agencies do a better job collecting information.
