26、The British love their supermarkets. And there are more and more of them every year. But is this a good thing? Not necessarily.
For a start, supermarkets have a negative effect on local communities. Money spent in independent small shops usually stays in the area. However, money spent at supermarkets is often put into the bank accounts of distant shareholders(股东), some of whom don't even pay any tax(税) in the UK!
Supermarkets are also bad for animal welfare(福利、关心). The UK has high standards in this field, but some supermarkets get their meat from abroad. And in many cases, this meat is produced under conditions that would be illegal (违法的) in the UK. But once they've got the meat, supermarkets put a British flag on the product as the meat is packed there. Dishonest? Not exactly, but it isn't entirely true either!
Supermarkets have a poor environmental record too. Many of them don't store food products themselves as storage space is expensive, so they get food producers to do it for them. This means that supermarket trucks have to make more trips to collect supplies. In turn, this increases the amount of petrol used, which leads to more pollution. In fact, the average item of food from a supermarket travels over 1,000 kilometres. Supermarkets also use a lot of plastic packaging, which isn't good for the environment either.
So, what can be done to help the small shops? Not much really. Supermarkets have a lot of power. Many political parties(政党) receive donations from supermarkets and supermarkets often use their money to influence decisions. For example, just before the millennium (the year 2000), one supermarket gave the government £12 million to help build the Millennium Dome in London. Later, plans to tax supermarket car parks were dropped.
Supermarkets are good news for shoppers looking for a bargain, but they're definitely bad for local business, animals and the environment!
【1】Why are supermarkets in the UK bad for local communities?
A.They refuse to employ local workers.
B.They take money away from the locals.
C.They drive small shops out of the area.
D.They pay more tax than local companies.
【2】What is the problem with the meat at supermarkets?
A.It is often priced dishonestly.
B.It may be packed under poor conditions.
C.It is sometimes produced illegally in the UK.
D.It may be below UK standard for animal welfare.
【3】How do supermarkets affect the environment?
A.They cause too much food waste.
B.They reuse a lot of plastic packaging.
C.They occupy much land-as storage space.
D.They carry food over long distances by truck.
【4】What does the author think of political parties in the UK?
A.They are heart-broken.
B.They are money-driven.
C.They are open-minded.
D.They are strong-willed.
27、 Researchers spotted the killer whale they call J35 alongside her playful and lively new calf on Saturday—a ray of hope for the endangered Southern Resident population off the Pacific Northwest.
An orca that once spent 17 days carrying her dead calf has become a mother once again. The orca, identified by researchers as J35 and also known as Tahlequah, became a symbol in 2018 of the difficult situation of the Southern Resident whales, which were 88 in number when they were listed as endangered in 2005 and have decreased further since then. The birth of the new orca, which was seen for the first time by researchers on Saturday, brings the population to 73.
“It's a bit of a nail-biter right now,” said Dr. Deborah Giles, a whale researcher. I can't help but be thrilled that she had this baby and this baby didn't die right away. Everybody is worried and on pins and needles, wondering if this calf is going to make it.
The Southern Resident population of orcas, which are also known as killer whales, largely stay near Washington State and British Columbia. The whales have been struggling to get through a variety of troubles-a lack of high-quality food to eat, noise pollution from ships and boats in their habitat, and dangerous pollutants that make their way up the food chain to them. Many of the population's pregnancies 35 fail, and about 40 percent of the calves die in their first year.
J35 had a calf in 2018 that died shortly after birth off the coast of Victoria, British Columbia. The mother continued to carry the calf, pushing it through the water and repeatedly diving deep to get it when it fell away. Orcas sometimes do that for a little while, but J35's journey of grief lasted 17days and covered about 1,000 miles, attracting wide attention at a moment when government agencies were attempting to change the population's downward trend.
Ken Balcomb, founding director of the Centre for Whale Research, documented the newest calf, listed now as J57, in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Mr. Balcomb said he was hopeful that recent efforts could bring back more Chinook salmon, the primary food source for the Southern Resident orcas. He pointed to the removal of a dam on the Elwha River, which empties into the strait, as a possible turning point.
【1】What can be learned about J35?
A.She once refused to part from her dead baby.
B.She went through great difficulty in order to survive.
C.She once received loving care and attention from researchers.
D.She looked different from the other Southern resident whale
【2】How do the researchers feel about the new calf?
A.Relieved.
B.Anxious.
C.Puzzled.
D.Proud.
【3】What did Ken Balcomb talk about in the last paragraph?
A.How the newest calf was named.
B.The main habitat for Southern Resident orcas.
C.How the dam on the Elwha River was removed.
D.The measures for helping Southern Resident survive.
28、Tired of your quiet day-to-day life? How about leaving your computer games behind and taking up an extreme sport?
You can ride a bicycle, right? In that case you’re halfway to becoming a mountain biker. All you have to do is take your bike off the road and try some hilly areas. Mountain biking was developed in California in the 1970s and became an Olympic sport in 1996.
Not challenging enough? Skydivers jump from planes at a height of 1,000 to 4,000 meters. You have to be fit but there’s no age limit with this sport. For example, Dilys Price from Cardiff went on her first jump aged 54. The minute she came down, she wanted to go up again. She said: “It was so attractive”.
Some adventures have invented base jumping, in which people jump from tall structures, such as buildings or bridges, with a parachute. Many of their jumps aren’t legal, especially in the cities.Dan Witchalls has jumped off The Shard —London’s 310 meter-high building four times. He says, “Base jumping is scarier than jumping out of a plane. In a plane there is no sense of height, but when you are standing on the edge of the building you can see people and cars, the experience makes it very real.”
It seems there’s no shortage of imagination when it comes to risking life to look cool and get the heart beating wildly. Surfing, diving, rock climbing ...And how about extreme ironing? That is, pressing your clothes on top of a mountain! Extreme ironing is said to have been created in the 1990s in England by a man who saw a large amount of wrinkled clothes and felt bored when doing the cloth ironing. That man was Phil Shaw. For him, the excitement of this sport comes from looking at the viewers’ faces. Shaw says, “Sometimes they look confused; sometimes they laugh. It’s fun to see how people react to it.”

32、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Ella walked into the kitchen and twirled. She was wearing a new dress and felt like a famous model. Even better, it was a dress she made! Her very first piece of fashion! “What do you think?” she asked her family. They all gathered at the kitchen table for an early school breakfast. The scent of French Toast hung in the air and made Ella’s stomach grumble.
“Is that the secret dress you’ve been working on?” Mom asked.
“Yes! This is it! Don’t you love it?” Ella twirled again.
“It’s very pretty, Ella. I can’t believe you designed and sewed that all by yourself!”
“I’m so proud of you! How long did that take?” Dad said as he reached across the table for the syrup(糖浆) bottle.
Ella pulled out her chair and sat down. “Two weeks! But I think I could make the next one faster.”
“Nice job, Ella! I can’t believe you can sew like that! You’re only eight years old!” Mom praised.
Ella smiled as she poured some syrup over the pancake on her plate. It was going to be a perfect day.
The kids at school were excited about her dress, and she got some nice comments from some girls, so she was happy about that. The day went by quickly, and before she knew it, she was outside for the last class break of the day. What a perfect day! She thought to herself as she swung on the swings. Ella leaned back in the swing and looked up at the blue sky full of white wispy clouds. She smiled. This would be the first dress of many that she would make. Some day she would have her very own fashion line with all kinds of clothes. She would be famous one day.
The school bell rang and the break was over. All the kids were moving slowly toward the door to go back inside. Ella sat up straight on the swing and waited for it to stop. When the swing was close to stopping, Ella jumped off. When she landed, she heard a loud rip. “Oh no!” she whispered as she moved her hand to the back of her dress. It was ripped(撕破) all the way down the back! Everyone would laugh at her. This was terrible!
