26、Alex Vardakostas spent his childhood flipping(翻转)burgers at his parents' restaurant in Southern California. It was, he recalls(回忆), a repetitive and uninteresting task. Vardakostas said, Making so many burgers every day; I realized that there must be a better product I can create to make food. He helped develop the restaurant's main attraction: a robot machine that makes the world's freshest cheeseburgers.
The machine has already drawn big crowds. People want to see exactly how a robot makes a burger and whether it tastes good. The robot is 14-feet long and takes five minutes to make a burger from start to finish.
After seeing the robot in action, one customer, Evan, was almost speechless. "I knew that they could drive cars, " he said, "but I didn't know that robots could make a delicious burger. "
The robot's 350 sensors and 20 microcomputers help make sure that every burger is perfect. The materials are organic and locally sourced whenever possible, but the burgers are still affordable. Because a machine makes the burgers, the restaurant doesn't have to pay kitchen staff. Employees focus on offering the customer good service.
Besides, the restaurant offers its employees higher pay than the ordinary standard in the food industry. Staff members are able to read books for five percent of their workday so that they can continue to learn. Money is allotted(分配)for books, and more educational opportunities are being planned.
For Evan, the most important thing is still the burger. "The restaurant's robot is the perfect chef, " he said, "because a person can make mistakes but a robot can't. "

27、How do you learn English? Are you trying to improve your speaking? Then aim for fluency and “standard” pronunciation. Do you want to get better at writing? You should practice vocabulary and grammar.
But this way of learning, though necessary, misses one big thing: people from different places may speak English differently. For example, people from the US and the UK speak very differently. If a British friend invited me to eat lunch at his apartment, he might say: “Come over to mine round 1 p.m.” But if I invited him over, I might say: “Be at my place a little after 1 p.m.” “My place” is more commonly used in the US; “mine” is more frequently used in the UK—both are informal ways of saying “my house” or “my apartment”.
Even people in different parts of the US speak very differently. For example, imagine that you are talking to a group of people and want to address them all at once. What pronoun do you use? “You”, you should reply—that’s the correct pronoun whether you’re addressing one person or a group. But using “you” to address many people feels strange in a conversation. The most common choice around the US is to say “you guys”. But working class natives of my hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, say “yinz”. In eastern Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, some people say “youse”. In the southern US, people say “y’all”.
The point is that there’s a lot more to languages than what’s standard and proper. So take a tour around the US, y’all. Yinz will be glad that youse do it.
【1】What is the passage mainly about?
A.The reason why we need to practice pronunciation.
B.How to understand the native English speakers.
C.How to practice vocabulary and grammar effectively.
D.The different ways native speakers use the language.
【2】What is the informal way of saying “my house” in the UK?

C.speak to
D.turn to

A.the southern US
B.Pennsylvania

28、An alarming scientific review has found human activity is driving insects to extinction. When the bottom of the food chain is endangered, so is everything up the chain, including people. Insect reductions threaten birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians (两栖动物)that eat insects, as well as many plants that require them for pollination(授粉). Insects are also important to soil health, nutrient recycling and ecosystem functioning.
Habitat loss from intensive agriculture and urbanization is the main cause of the reductions, according to the review “Worldwide reduction of insects: A review of its drivers”. Agricultural pesticide(杀虫剂)and fertilizer use, pathogens, invasive species and climate change are also major reasons.
A World Wildlife Fund study concluded that we’ve wiped out 60 percent of mammals, fish, birds and reptiles since 1970. Another study found people have destroyed 83 percent of wild mammals and half of all plants since the dawn of civilization. As frightening as that, the rate of insect extinction is eight times that of mammals, birds and reptiles. If these trends continue, most insects could be gone within a century, which will severely affect all life.
Some solutions can be carried out quickly and relatively easily, such as banning the worst pesticides, carrying out many available and emerging solutions to pollution and global warming, and examining better ways to grow, produce and distribute food. Sanchez-Bayo argues that changes in agricultural methods are extremely important, noting organic farms and farms that used limited pesticide amounts in the past had more insects. Research also shows organic farms maintain healthier soils, use less energy, send out fewer greenhouse gas emissions and produce higher yields than conventional farms, especially during droughts.
Many people are frightened at the thought of bites and stings by insects. But whatever you think of them, there’s no doubt that they’re essential to all life. If insects die out, we won’t survive. From banning destructive pesticides to reforming agricultural methods to planting insect- and pollinator-friendly gardens in urban areas, there’s much we can and must do to help the creatures survive and develop.
【1】What may insect extinction result in?
A.Improving soil health.
B.Reducing human activities.
C.Increasing the varieties of plants and animals.
D.Threatening all up the food chain depending on them.
【2】Which of the following creatures disappear most quickly according to paragraph 3?
A.Plants.
B.Wild mammals.
C.Insects.
D.Birds and reptiles.
【3】According to Sanchez-Bayo, what is a vital method to prevent the insect reduction?
A.Allowing people to keep insects.
B.Improving the way of farming.
C.Banning destructive pesticides.
D.Planting insect-friendly gardens.
【4】What would be the best title for the text?
A.Like Them Or Not, We Need Insects

29、They wear the latest fashions with the most uptodate accessories(配饰).Yet these are not girls in their teens or twenties but women in their sixties and seventies. A generation which would once only wear oldfashioned clothes is now favouring the same high street looks worn by those half their age.
Professor Julia Twigg,a social policy expert, said,“Women over 75 are now shopping for clothes more often than they did when they were young in the 1960s.In the 1960s buying a coat for a woman was a serious matter. It was an expensive item that they would purchase only every three or four years—now you can pick one up at the supermarket whenever you wish to. Fashion is a lot cheaper and people get tired of things more quickly.”
Professor Twigg analysed family expenditure(支出)data and found that while the percentage of spending on clothes and shoes by women had stayed around the same—at 5 or 6 per cent of spending—the amount of clothes bought had risen sharply.
The professor said.“Clothes are now 70 per cent cheaper than they were in the 1960s because of the huge expansion of production in the Far East. In the 1960s Leeds was the heart of the British fashion industry and that was where most of the clothes came from, but now almost all of our clothes are sourced elsewhere. Everyone is buying more clothes but in general we are not spending more money on them.”
Angela Barnard, who runs her own fashion business in London, said older women were much more affected by celebrity(名流)style than in previous years.
She said,“When people see stars such as Judi Dench and Helen Mirren looking attractive and fashionable in their sixties, they want to follow them. Older women are much more aware of celebrities. There's also the boom in TV programmes showing people how they can change their look, and many of my older customers do yoga to stay in shape well in their fifties. When I started my business a few years ago,my older customers tended to be very rich, but now they are what I would call ordinary women. My own mother is 61 and she wears the latest fashions in a way she would never have done ten years ago.”

32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues around. But in my heart I was sad because I couldn’t stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand on my face. “Dad, Merry Christmas!” was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got down stairs just to see the two little boys’ faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus(圣诞老人) had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection(检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife. I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages, thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence(缺席) from their Christmas these years.
