25、If you bought some candy months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it’s still eatable? The easiest way is to check the “expiration date(EXP)” printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you may throw the candy away. But is that really necessary?
According to a new report from the NRDC, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don’t fully understand what expiration dates actually mean, so they think the food is not safe to eat.
Food dating was introduced in 1975 because customers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates only showed freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.
However, most customers mistakenly believed that use-by dates showed how safe the food was. But the truth is that these dates have nothing to do with the danger of food poisoning(中毒). Eggs, can still be eaten three to five weeks after being bought, even though the use﹣by dates is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry-flavored drinks may lose their red color and cookies may lose their crunch(松脆的口感), but they are not harmful.
“It’s an unclear subject, the difference between food quality and food safety,” said Jane Roberts from a US food testing company. “Even the workmates in the food factory are not sure about it. This is why the use-by dates must be printed on the covers of products. We hope it can help customers understand the information so that they won’t waste a lot of food.”
But this won’t be a mistake that is easy to correct, because people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently. Some are still eatable long after their use-by date while others are not.
As a result, food factory officials are not thinking of changing the use-by dates to a date which can show when the food is to be thrown away.
【1】Every year, why is tons of food thrown away?
A.Because it is no longer delicious.
B.Because it is no longer fresh.
C.Because people think it’s not safe to cat.
D.Because the use-by dates are wrongly printed.
【2】What did the use-by dates show at first according to the passage?
A.Food safety.
B.Food quality.
C.Food freshness.
D.Food producer.
【3】What do the underlined words “expiration date (EXP)” mean?
A.生产日期
B.出厂期
C.包装期
D.有效期
【4】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.Even after their expiration dates pass, some foods are still safe to cat.
B.“Expiration dates” were first used to show when food was possible to go bud.
C.Most customers care more about freshness than food safety.
D.Most customers fully understand what expiration dates mean.

It was like big, black clouds hanging over the classroom. Some of us even c【3】 sadly. I asked myself, “How did we let this happen? ”
The answer was clear. Our players practised a lot. But during the practice time, we didn’t find out the right way to do better u【4】 the two days before the sports month. I guessed the way we practised didn’t help us win. So it meant that our practice time was wasted. Also, we were too nervous to face the challenge from the other team while we were playing. We should face the facts to find out why we have failed but it is useless to find an e【5】 for our failure. So, just keep going and trying our best, in a right way.
