24、The elephant lives in groups. An elephant herd(兽群)usually has from twenty to forty members. The elephants in the herd usually depend on one another for help in time of trouble.

The leader of the group is usually a wise and strong female. She travels at the head of the herd and is followed by the other female and their young. The male elephants follow last. When the danger comes, the male elephants form a circle around the weaker animals and protect them.

The members of the herd are loyal to one another. A sick elephant is not left behind to die. If an elephant is sick, the whole herd stops travelling until it gets well. When an elephant is hurt, two others walk on both sides of it and support it with their bodies. A member of the herd may be caught in a trap. Then the others try to help it.

Elephants love the youngsters in the group and give them special care. They help young animals stay afloat when the herd crosses a river. They work together to help a calf(幼崽)when it goes to a dangerous place.

When a female elephant gives birth to her young baby, she leaves the herd for a short time. However, she takes another female along to act as “aunt”. The aunt helps the mother with her new-born calf. In this way, the whole herd protects its newest member.

25、   Children in England will no longer be able to buy energy drinks. The UK government has made plans to ban (禁止) the sale of energy drinks to kids. It is now asking for public suggestions about what age the ban should start at (16 or 18), the BBC reported.

An energy drink is a type of drink that contains stimulants (兴奋剂), such as caffeine (咖啡因). Red Bull is one of the most famous energy drinks. The makers of these drinks say that they can give you energy when you feel tired.

However, these drinks have very high levels of sugar and caffeine. Energy drinks have 65 percent more sugar than normal soft drinks. This mainly may explain why the number of obesity (肥胖) children has risen.

Too much caffeine can lead to health problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness. A 250 ml can of Red Bull contains about 80 mg of caffeine, three times the level of a can of Coca-Cola, The Guardian noted.

In the UK, more than two-thirds of 10-to-17-year-old buy energy drinks, according to government data. “Children obesity is one of the greatest health challenges (挑战) this country faces. It’s important that we do all we can do to make sure children have the best start in life,” UK Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement.

The ban would apply to (应用于) drinks containing more than 150 mg of caffeine per liter. Under the ban, shops in England that sell the drinks to children would face fines (处罚) of up to $2500.
