24、Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
Last summer, I began the biggest adventure of my life. I moved from a tiny city in England to one of the largest cities in the world.
As the plane landed in Beijing, I felt excited that I'd finally arrived after months of planning. One of the first things 1 did was visiting one of the city’s hutongs(胡同). Strolling (闲逛)around the narrow streets, the warm air was filled with the smell of delicious food as people played mahjong and rode their old-fashioned bikes . This was the first moment I thought, "Wow, I'm in China."
Beijing couldn't be more different to my own home city, Preston, which has a population of just 114,000. It has one shopping street that's around 500 meters from one end to the other and on Sunday, all the shops close at 4:00 pm. There isn't a great deal of choice when it comes to restaurants, either, and as a fan of food, I couldn't wait to see what Beijing has to offer. I still don't have a favorite dish here yet.
I'm slowly getting used to the fast-paced(快节奏的) lifestyle and different way of life , but I still find some habits here quite strange and humorous .
British people are raised to not make any sort of bodily noise at the dinner table or in public , so to hear the loud noise of Chinese diners or the throat-clearing(清嗓子) sounds of colleagues(同事) was a funny culture shock at first .
Something else I’ve discovered is the attention that being a foreigner brings. On the subway or in streets and restaurants, some people stare (盯着看) and try to take secret photos of me. It seems that I am a famous person or a popular star.
In the future, I hope to see many other parts of China. My dream is to buy a motorbike travel from one end to the other of this beautiful country, taking photos and meeting new people along the way.
My adventure in China is only just beginning, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

25、Alfredo Moser is a Brazilian worker who is skilled at repairing machines. His wife says her husband has always been handy (手巧的) at home and made tables and chairs. Alfredo has invented a way of lighting his house during the day without electricity.
He has been using plastic bottles filled up with water and a little bleach (漂 白剂) to provide dark rooms with light for many years. And the idea has now spread across the world. It is predicted that his lighting system, which works using refraction (折射) of sunlight, will be fitted in over a million homes by the end of this year.
Alfredo used normal plastic drink bottles that are often thrown away. The secret of the liquid in the bottles is the bleach added to water, which stops it turning green in the sunlight. Mr. Moser drills a hole in a roof tile (瓦片) and then pushes the bottle in from below, keeping the bottle in place with polyester resin (聚酯树脂). Depending on the strength of sunlight, the light fills his home, and the bottles are just like electric bulbs (灯泡) of between 40 and 60 watts (瓦).
Alfredo came up with the idea for his “Moser light” during one of the blackouts in Brazil in 2002. He said only factories had power in his home city, in southern Brazil during the energy shortage.
The local supermarket and his neighbours’ houses are using Moser lights. He earned a few dollars, but his invention has not made him a rich man. Now a great number of people admire what he is doing!

C. Because the bleach can protect water from turning green.
D. Because the bleach can reflect the sunlight.
【3】Which of the following is TRUE about the passage?

28、 Paintings found on the walls of caves in the Sahara Desert suggest that a few thousand years ago, large quantities of plants grew there and covered the desert floor. Many curious and unusual insects, birds and animals got enough food that allowed them to grow and reproduce. At that time, huge river systems and many oases s【1】 growing communities (社团, 社区) where a large number of people lived.
Research scientists believe that the land became a desert for several reasons. For centuries people there have wandered from place to place in search of food, water and grazing (吃草) land for their animals. These people have always considered the number of animals they have as a sign of w【2】. It is considered more important to have 100 sick and starving animals than 15 healthy ones. The large herds (群) have been allowed to go freely and graze on desert plants and grass. Over time, large sections of land have been left uncovered. B【3】 overgrazing, these people cut down whatever trees they could find and used them for firewood. The sand was unable to hold on to the great heat of the day, so nighttime temperatures often drop below freezing and n【4】 was left to hold the soil together.
Scientists have been studying different ways to bring back the green desert. Through research and experiments, they hope to be able to produce plants that will once again support the life there. Huge holes f【5】 with much water lie under the desert surface. Scientists believe this rainwater simply flew down through the sand over hundreds of years and collected in the big, rocky holding tanks. By making use of the sun's power, scientists in the Sahara have made experiments in which they got huge amount of electricity. This electricity was then used to operate drilling machines and pumps to pull the rainwater from the underground tanks. By drilling the hole one mile deep into the floor of the desert, one machine was able to recover more than 80 gallons of ice-cold water each second, or 288,000 gallons per hour.
Scientists have had some s【6】 turning this wasteland into useful farmland. Today the desert is dotted with huge wheat fields watered by a system of pipes that carry water from the underground tanks. Farmers have also learnt that plants grow better if seeds are planted next to stones. Studies show that stones provide protection from the sun, allowing seeds to grow in a shady and cool environment. In addition to that, greenhouses have been built to protect plants from the sunshine so that l【7】 water is needed. Another idea is to grow plants that can live on a diet of salt water, since the ocean is so near to the desert.
