六、阅读理解(共3题,共 15分)

21、Hundreds of years ago, people carried news from place to place on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions (十亿) of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, by watching TV or reading newspapers.

Newspapers became an important part of everyday life about three hundred years ago. And they are always important. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to choose? Why do they choose some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?

Firstly, it is important to report (报道) news stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may choose quite different stories to those on TV.

Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories about everyday life. So, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never choose stories about planes landing safely instead they choose stories about plane accidents (事故).

Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more like to read stories about people, places and events (事件) in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

1According to the passage, how do people learn about news stories in the world now?

A. They carry news stories and tell others from place to place on foot or by horse.

B. They tell each other what they see with their eyes.

C. They listen to the radio every day.

A. people can learn more about the same news story from a newspaper

B. people can read the news story more quickly in a newspaper

3According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly read in newspapers?

D. The bike in front of your house is lost.

4Which of the following is TRUE in this passage?

B. People only read interesting and unusual news at their spare time.

C. News stories in newspapers must be different to those on TV.

D. Newspapers became an important part of everyday life years ago.

22、In the past ten years, many scientists have studied the differences between men and women. And they all got the same answer: The sexes(性别) are different, because their brains are different. And this, the scientists say, makes men and women see the world in different ways.

Boys, for example, generally are better than girls at mathematical ideas. Boys are also generally better than girls at the kind of hand and eye movements necessary for ball sports. Girls, on the other hand generally start speaking earlier than boys. And they generally see better in the dark than boys and are better at learning foreign languages.

What makes men and women better at one thing or another? The answer is the brain. The brain has two sides connected by nerve(神经) tracks. The left side generally is used for mathematics, speech and writing. The right side is used for artistic creation and the expression for emotions(情感). Girls develop the right side of the brain faster than boys, while boys develop the left side faster. Another interesting difference is that the two sides of a man’s brain are connected by a smaller number of nerves than the two sides of a woman’s brain are.

Bing Dwen Dwen, a panda in an ice shell, was chosen as the mascot for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics in 2019. Now it has been made into lovely toys and models, as well as printed on notebooks, bags, and so on.

“The International Olympic Committee(国际奥组委)has found that successful mascots had to be cuddly(令人想拥抱的)and liked by 9-year-old children,” said Cao Xue, one of the designers of Bing Dwen Dwen. “And I knew Bing Dwen Dwen would be.”

Cao’s team once made three designs, and Cao asked his 9-year-old son to choose his favorite. “When he first saw it, he chose Bing Dwen Dwen, which was the final mascot,” Cao said.

Cao’s team tried many plants and animals, finally going with a panda. “What can better stand for China than our national treasure(宝藏)?” said Cao, “We don’t need to say anything to have it understood across different cultures.”

They faced a problem, though, there were already too many cartoon pandas. Cao’s team looked at panda designs from around the world. They wanted to make sure their panda was different. For this reason, Cao thought that it should be a baby panda. This is how they got Bing Dwen Dwen’s body shape.

Bing Dwen Dwen looks like an astronaut in a space suit. It waves its left hand to say hello. It has two red hearts on its hand, showing kindness and love.
