27、“Snowplow(扫雪机) parenting” is the newest parenting style that can include parents booking their adult children haircuts, calling their college kids to wake them up so that they don’t sleep through a test, and even calling their kids’ employers.

“‘Helicopter (直升机) parenting’ means monitoring their kids’ every activity, which is out of date.” Claire Cain Miller and Jonah Engel Bromwich wrote in The New York Times. “Some rich mothers and fathers now are more like snowplows: clearing any problems in their children’s path to success so that they don’t have to meet failure or lose opportunities.”

There is a mother who started a charity in her son’s name to try to raise his chances of being accepted to the college. Another parents spent years helping their daughter avoid foods with sauce, which she didn’t like. Once she got to college, she had problems with the food in her school because it was all covered in sauce.

A survey says that three-quarters of parents of children between the ages of 18 and 28 ask for doctor visits or haircuts for their children, and 11% say they would call their kids’ bosses whether their children are having an issue at work.

As reported, wealthy parents try to get their children into top colleges by giving a large amount of money to a school, such as paying for a building. This parenting has become the most popular way to raise children, whatever the income, education, or race is.

Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods.

The pawpaw is a kind of fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It is similar in size to a typical mango. It has a dull green-colored skin, and a soft, almost creamy orange inside. Most people agree that the pawpaw tastes like a combination of bananas, apricots (杏)and mangos. Most people are very surprised by its sweet taste. The fruit has a very short harvest season to three weeks in September and October.

The pawpaw has sold commercially (商品化地).The fruit requires a very special environment—low, wet artas that sometimes flood. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw trees.

Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit In several states farmers have organized pawpaw festivals to reintroduce the food to people.

29、   Scientists have been working to grow meat “in vitro,” or in a laboratory, for many years. In the laboratory, they mix cells from a horse and a pig. They feed the cells to help them increase in number and grow into a small piece of meat.

Right now, the meat that scientists have made is very small and looks gray because in vitro meat does not need blood to grow. But this is not its only problem. It takes a long time for the meat to  grow and scientists do not know how to make a large amount. It also costs a lot of money to  make in vitro meat. Making enough for one meal would cost $250,000.

Although producing in vitro meat has many problems, scientists continue to work because in vitro meat would have many advantages. Since we have 7,000,000,000 people on the planet to feed in, vitro meat can help lower the need for the earth’s resources(资源).

Besides, “Moving the production of meat from farms to laboratories would help cut down the huge amount of harmful gases produced by farm animals,” says reporter Nick Collins.

In vitro meat could solve many of the problems of animal meat. But can humans eat this in vitro meat? Scientists do not know if it even tastes like real meat. Because of food research laws, they are not yet able to taste their meat. But they hope someday people can buy it in their local market. They say it is real meat and it is just made in a different way.

A lot of people are still worried about in vitro meat. However, it will be years before the meat is ready to sell. Kate Shipard, a writer for Mother Jones magazine, says, “It will require hard testing before it can be fed to humans. It is still such a new idea that we do not know yet what health problems it may have. Right now, there are no rules for in vitro meat.”

1What are the scientists trying to find out in their experiment?

A.How to get a new kind of animal. B.How to make a new kind of meat.

C.How to make animal meat taste better. D.How to greatly increase animals’ numbers.

2What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The ways to improve the experiment.

B.The bad influence the experiment brings.

C.The problems scientists face in the experiment.

D.The difficulty in collecting money for the experiment.

31、

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
