26、 A group of sweaty kids ran around a field last week at Total Soccer Arena in Landover, Maryland. They talked in English, but also in Pashto, Arabic and other languages.
What made them different is that all of the kids are refugees(难民). They were playing as part of a camp that gives them a chance to develop their soccer skills and to meet other kids who had to start their lives over in the United States. The camp is run by an organization called LACES, which stands for Life and Change Experienced through Sports. The group uses soccer to help bring together communities that have experienced hardships.
SerenFryatt, 38, got the idea for LACES while playing on a women's soccer team in Liberia,an African country that had been at war with itself for 14 years. Fryatt, who's from Muncie, Indiana, saw that soccer brought joy to the Liberian women on her team, even though their lives off the field were very difficult. After starting a soccer program for kids in Liberia, she decided to start a similar camp in Maryland, where she moved in 2015. Coaches volunteer their time, and the costs are paid mostly by donations(捐赠). This year, 95 kids signed up.
The camp, for ages 9 to 14, is split(分组) between training that helps kids develop skills, such as passing and ball control, and meeting where they discuss life skills. One of the coaches, Louisa Pitney, said she likes seeing how the kids grow just from being together.
At the end of the camp's last day, all the kids gathered in the middle of the field. Fryatt asked them to raise their hands and say what they had learned that week. Some kids talked about soccer skills-one girl said she'd learned not to use her hands; a boy said he'd learned how to score a goal.
When a coach called on one shy girl, she smiled before answering in a soft voice.
“Celebrate each other, "she said.

27、 Rescuing victims from a burning building, a chemical spill, or any disaster that is inaccessible to human responders could one day be a task for adaptable robots. Imagine, for instance, rescue-robots rising up on two legs can bound through rubble, push aside a heavy obstacle, or break through a locked door.
Engineers are improving the design of four-legged robots and their abilities to run, jump and even do back leaps. But getting two-legged, human-like robots to use force or push against something without falling has been a lion in the way.
Now engineers at MIT and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have developed a method to control balance in a two-legged, tele-operated robot — an essential step toward enabling a human-like to carry out high-impact tasks in challenging environments. The team's robot, physically resembling a machined body and two legs, is controlled remotely by a human operator wearing a vest that sends information about the human's motion and ground reaction forces to the robot. Through the vest, the human operator can direct and experience the robot's movements. If the robot is starting to tip over, the human feels the same pull on the vest and can adjust in a way to rebalance both himself and the robot.
In experiments with the robot to test this new "balance feedback" approach, the researchers were able to remotely maintain the robot's balance as it jumped and walked in sync with its human operator.
“It's like running with a heavy backpack ——you can feel how the dynamics of the backpack move around you, and you can make up properly," says Joao Ramos, who developed the approach as an MIT post doctor. “Now if you want to open a heavy door, the human can command the robot to throw its body at the door and push it open, without losing balance. ”
【1】What's the function of the first paragraph?
A.Draw people's attention to a new robot. B.Show the appearance of the robot.
C.Tell the principle of the two-legged robot. D.Introduce the purpose of the two-legged robot.
【2】What is the trouble with human-like robots?
A.It's hard for them to do back leaps. B.It's hard for them to keep their balance.
C.They can't push against anything hard. D.They often fall back when meeting the lions.
【3】What is special about the robot research at MIT?
A.The tested robot's actions can be felt by the human operator.
B.The robot is tested in challenging environments by operator.
C.The data on the tested robot is sent by telephones.
D.The tested robot has a remote voice-control system.
【4】What can we learn from this passage?
A.The two-legged robot is worse than the four-legged robot.
B.The vest must be put into the machined body.
C.The new research on the robot has made great breakthrough.
D.The robot's movements must be controlled by human operator.
28、 You use her as a shoulder to cry on. She texts you back with casual jokes. But she, Xiaoice, is only a virtual chatbot.
Xiaoice, Microsoft’s latest artificial intelligence robot, was briefly released in 2014, and returned to WeChat in 2015, where she became a big hit. Millions young Chinese now exchange with her daily, The New York Times reported. On WeChat, Xiaoice is an official account. After following it, users can start text-based conversations with Xiaoice.
“People loved to talk with Xiaoice for her incredible learning ability,” Liu Jinchang, a researcher at High-tech Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told China Daily. Apart from her ability to identify photos and send emojis in conversations, Xiaoice gains 45 percent of her knowledge from interacting with users, China Daily reported.
Chatbot programs first appeared in the mid-1960s in the US. Driven by top tech companies, they are becoming smarter and more common. For instance, IBM’s latest artificial intelligence program serves as an academic consultant at Australia’s Deakin University, answering students’ questions about course schedules and financial aid. Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa have been used as voice assistants who can read news, play music and even make jokes for their users.
These programs are expected to move beyond smartphones, into televisions, cars and living rooms, The New York Times pointed out. However, it may take decades before scientists develop a “Samantha”, the advanced chatbot seen in the fiction film Her. In the film, Samantha sparks a romantic relationship with her user played by US actor Joaquin Phoenix. Many viewers are enthusiastic about this fantasy of virtual soul mate.
【1】What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.She became a best-seller. B.She became very powerful.
C.She became a moneyman. D.She became very popular.
【2】Which of the following can Xiaoice do?
A.Do housework. B.Spread messages.
C.Identify various photos. D.Read news to her users.
【3】What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A.Chatbots mainly run on smartphones now.
B.It’ll take decades to apply Chatbots to cars.
C.Samantha is played by a US actor in the film.
D.The film Her doesn’t interest many audiences.
29、Why do people feel so rushed? Part of this is a perception (认知) problem. Generally, people in rich countries have more free time than they used to. This is particularly true in Europe, but even in America free time has been inching up. Women's paid work has risen a lot over this period, but their time in unpaid work, like cooking and cleaning, has fallen even more significantly, thanks in part to dishwashers, washing machines and microwaves, and also to the fact that men shift themselves a little more around the house than they used to.
The problem, then, is less how much time people have than how they see it. Ever since a clock was first used at a workplace to record labor hours in the 18th century, time has been understood in relation to money. Once hours are financially quantified (量化), people worry more about wasting, but tend to save or use them more profitably. When economies grow and incomes rise, everyone's time becomes more valuable. And the more valuable something becomes, the rarer it seems.
Once seeing their time in terms of money, people often________the former to maximize the latter. Workers who are paid by the hour volunteer less of their time and tend to feel more upset when they are not working.
The relationship between time, money and anxiety is something Gary Becker noticed in America's post-war boom years. "If anything, time is used more carefully today than a century ago," he noted in 1965. He found that when people are paid more to work, they tend to work longer hours, because working becomes a more profitable use of time. So the rising value of work time puts pressure on all time. Leisure time starts to seem more stressful, as people are forced to use it wisely or not at all.
【1】Women's time in unpaid work has fallen partly because ______.
A. men's ability to support a family has been improved
B. men's involvement in housework has increased
C. women's leisure time was taken up by heavy housework
D. women become more skilled at household equipment
【2】From the second paragraph, we learn that ______.
A. labor hours were recorded with a clock
B. people haven't realized the value of time
C. more work hours bring in more money
D. The rise of incomes makes time less valuable
【3】The underlined phrasegrow stingy withcan probably be replaced by "______".
A. refuses to delay B. intend to kill
C. try to accumulate D. hesitate to spend
【4】According to Gary Becker, what causes people feel anxious about time?
A. The wrong way of time being spent.
B. People's willingness to work hard.
C. The increasing value of work time.
D. More and more leisure time.

31、 If you’re visiting Florence, Italy, you’ve got to see the world-famous Uffizi Gallery. But why? Because that’s what _______ does in Florence? Because you feel it _______ to post a selfie in front of the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus (《维纳斯的诞生》)?
Those are obviously _______ reasons. We shouldn’t go to places because they’re world-famous; instead, we should go to fully _______ what made them world-famous. But that requires a well-planned visit, not just following the _______ , taking pictures and checking it off your wish list.
For example, you cannot visit the crown of Lady Liberty (自由女神像的别称) at all without serious _______ .” On busy days, we’re taking 25,000 people on a small island, and only 500 a day get to the crown,” said Michael Amato, the lead park ranger (管理人) for the Statue of Liberty National Monument, “Right now we’re sold out until two months later”. So you need to check what’s available only _________.
Still, a lot can _______ before you actually go on the trip. “Keep up to date,” said Jade McKellar, the director of visitor experiences at the Sydney Opera House. “_______ us on social media and sign up for our newsletter.” Even without a booking, visitors can often buy tickets for events that run 363 days a year. But like many sites, a true visit means spending a full day, something a(n) __________ traveller might be unwilling to do.
Another reason to set aside more time: Visitors can check out the less famous but equally worthwhile — often beautifully complementary (互补的) sites __________. Susan Greaney, the senior historian at English Heritage, which is in charge of Stonehenge (巨石阵), __________ a trip to the two history museums with Stonehenge-relevant exhibitions. Each of them is less than a 30-minute driveaway but likely to be __________ on a one-day tour from London. Of course, you simply __________ the world-famous attraction. If you’re __________ museums by the time you get to Florence, forget the Uffizi and take advantage of other things Florence offers. Don’t worry about what your friends will think.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 【7】before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.
At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 【8】. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 【9】 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.
The swing creaking , rocking chairs 【10】 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

My daughter
(A story told by a father, a famous actor)
My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.
I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 【1】 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.
We were 【2】 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 【3】 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 【4】 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.
I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 【5】 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 【6】a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.
We have such similar tastes in books and music 【7】 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.
I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 【8】 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.
We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.
