27、Dujiangyan is the oldest man-made water system in the world, and a wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6,000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide water for 50 cities in the province.

In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed.

The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.

Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplishment as it was done long before the invention gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 20-metre-wide canals had been carved through the mountain.

Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature. Unlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.

【1】What are the benefits of Dujiangyan according to the first paragraph?

A.Reducing flooding and watering farmland.

B.Protecting the mountain and reducing flooding.

C.Watering farmland and improving water quality.

D.Drying the river and supplying cities with water.

A.Heavy rains.

B.Melting snow.

C.Low river banks.

D.Steep mountains.

【3】How was Li Bing able to break through the rocks of Mount Yulei?

A.By using gunpowder.

B.By flooding the rocks with water.

C.By applying a heating and cooling technique.

D.By breaking the rocks with hammers and spades.

【4】Why is Dujiangyan greatly admired by scientists today?

B.It took very little time to complete the project.

C.The building techniques used were very modem.

D.It has raised the living standards of the local people.

28、   When you're a parent to a young child, you spend a lot of time talking about feelings: about having to share, about being disappointed because you may not have a cookie instead of broccoli(绿花椰菜), about the great injustice of a parent pressing the elevator button before the child has a chance to.

And in a parenting culture that's increasingly concerned with centering children's needs above all else, mothers and fathers have become skillful at talking about their kids' feelings while masking their own. But new research suggests that parents who hide their negative emotions are doing their children, and themselves harm.

A study published this month says that when parents put on a faux-happy(假开心)face for their kids, they do damage to their own sense of wellbeing and authenticity.

“For the average parent the findings suggest when they attempt to hide their negative emotion expression and over express their positive emotions with their children, it actually comes at a cost: doing So may lead parents to feel worse themselves, "researcher Dr. Emily Impett, says.

It makes sense that parents often fall back on amping up(扩大)the positivity for the sake of their children-there are a lot of things in the world we want to protect our kids from. But children are often smarter than we expect and are quite in tune with what the people closest to them-their parents-are feeling.

There was a time about a year or so ago, for example, when I received some bad news over the phone; I was home with my four-year-old and so I did my best to put on a brave face. She knew immediately something was wrong though, and was confused.

When I finally let a few tears out and explained that Mom heard something sad about a friend, she was, of course, just fine. My daughter patted my shoulder, gave me a hug, and went back to playing. She felt better that she was able to help me, and the moment made a lot more sense to her emotionally than a smiling mom holding back sobs. I was glad that I could feel sad momentarily and not have to work hard to hide that.

Relaying positive feelings to your children when you don't feel them is a move the researchers called high cost-that it may seem like the most beneficial to your child at the time but that parents should find other ways of communicating emotions that" allow them to feel true to themselves”

But this is also about children seeing the world in a more honest way. While we will want to protect our children from things that aren't age-appropriate or harmful, it's better to raise a generation of kids who understand that moms and dads are people too.

1What is the typical behavior of parents when they bring up their children?

A.Allowing their children chances to do things themselves.

B.Expressing their dissatisfaction with their children.

C.Sharing their favorite food with their children.

D.Hiding their true feelings from their children.

2If parents put on a faux-happy face,_

A.their children will be protected

B.their children will be taken in

C.they will experience worse feelings

D.they will feel happy as a result

A.children are not so clever as parents think

B.it's meaningful for parents to always look positive

C.children can often understand parents' true feelings

D.it's necessary to expose children to harmful things

4We can conclude from the passage that_____

A.protecting children from age-inappropriate things is important

B.children will admire their parents more because of being protected

C.it makes sense for children to know their parents' bad feelings

D.separation from bad feelings helps children see the world honestly

29、   Anyone who has had a long-term illness knows that recovering at home can be boring. This can be especially true of children. They may feel cut off from their friends and classmates. Now, these children may have a high-tech friend to help feel less lonely. That friend is a robot.

The robot is called Avatarl (AV1). It takes their place at school. Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends. They also can take part in classes from wherever they are recovering. And the children's school friends must help. They carry the robot between classes and place the robot on their desks.

A Norwegian company called No Isolation created the robot. There are another two co-founders: Karen Dolva and Marius Aabel.

Dolva explains how the robot works. She says from home the child uses an iPad or a phone to start the robot, control the robot’s movements with touch, and talk through it. The child can take part in classroom activities. The robot is equipped with speakers, microphones and cameras that make communicating easy. So it’s the eyes and the ears and the voice of the child at school. Inside AVI is a small computer connected to a 4G network. A small camera connected to a small computer could do the job. But that would not be the same.

AV1 was designed to be tough. It won't allow water to pass through it and can take a fall from a desk without damage. AV1 is large and looks like a human for a reason. Dolva says it can't be just a tiny camera because the other kids can't pick it up and take it with them. This is important because the robot is supposed to be a friend to the children.

Hopefully AV1 will help some children feel less lonely while they are absent from class.

1What is the passage mainly about?

A.The robot has been used widely in many fields.

B.The robot can make friends with sick children.

C.The robot will take sick children to take part in classes.

D.The robot may help sick children feel less lonely.

四、短文填空(共1题,共 5分)

31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
