二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   Many cultures around the world have a grain that is not grown or even known outside its home area. Now, a staple grain native to Ethiopia, teff, is appearing on grocery shelves in America.

Teff has been an important part of the Ethiopian diet for thousands of years. Like rice and wheat, it is a cereal grass. Teff is known for its fine grain and used mainly to make flour. Teff flour is the key ingredient in injera, the large, spongy pancakes that make up a large portion of the Ethiopian diet.

Teff was introduced to the United States by a man named Wayne Carlson, who learned about teff while doing public health work in Africa in the mid-1970s. "I came to know teff because I was eating it all the time and hosted by teff farmers. " he said. In the late 70s, Carlson returned to the U. S. , married and settled in southwest Idaho. Then he came up with an idea to introduce teff grass to his home state. " Geologically, it is very similar to Ethiopia."

Wayne and his wife Elisabeth are not farmers, nor do they want to be. So they convinced actual farmers in Idaho to grow teff on contract for them. The Carlsons milled it themselves.

Wayne went through the Washington, D. C. telephone book and looked for the names that were Ethiopian. And that is how the business slowly grew. Over time, the Teff Company has outgrown four different mills.

Rich Roseberg is a food researcher at Oregon State University. He says teff production has exploded over the past decade in the U. S. He says most teff grown in the U. S. is fed to farm animals. In Idaho, however, where the Carlsons are based, Roseberg believes more of the teff production is for human food. Teff contains lots of calcium, iron, protein and fiber. Roseberg credits Wayne Carlson for being ahead of his time.

1How do the Ethiopians mainly use teff?

A.By eating the cereal grass. B.By using the flour made from it.

C.By adding the plant into injera. D.By mixing it with rice and wheat.

2According to Wayne, why is it possible for teff to grow well in Idaho?

A.Idaho is located close to Ethiopia.

B.Teff is easy to survive on its own.

C.Idaho has geographic features similar to Ethiopia.

D.Teff was originally introduced to Ethiopia from Idaho.

3What can we infer from Paragraph 5?

A.Wayne's teff did not sell well at first.

B.Wayne's teff was sold only to Ethiopians.

C.Wayne sent teff to his Ethiopian friends.

D.Wayne lost control of his Teff Company.

4What is Rich Roseberg's attitude to Wayne introducing teff into America?

A.Worried. B.Disapproving.

C.Favorable. D.Pessimistic.

27、Dear Sir,

I am writing in reply to your article about homelessness in Ledchester as it raises questions about whether or how we should give money to charity.

There are now so many chances to give to charity in the UK these days that it can be difficult to know what is best to do. As your article said, if you go shopping in Ledchester city centre, there will be many chances to give money to charity, or to homeless people who look poor, tired and cold, but the solution is not as easy as you seem to think. Can I be sure that the person won’t spend the money on alcohol() or drugs? You seem to have forgotten the research which showed that 9 out of 10 people begging on the street spend the money they are given on alcohol and drugs. Also, can I be sure that the person isn’t one of those “professional beggars” who simply pretend to be homeless and poor?

I think a more effective way to give money is to buy things in one of the many charity shops in Ledchester such as the Oxfam shop. This isn’t really charity as you are buying something, but you know the money is going to a good cause.

In recent years, as we all know, there have been a lot of big events organized to raise money for charity. Many will remember “Live Aid”. Lots of famous bands got together to hold a concert and make a record with all the money going to Ethiopia because of the food shortages there. The BBC also has a “Children in Need” day every year. In one sense you could say that these events are very successful as they raise a lot of money. However, I don’t believe that these events solve the real problems. In my view, these events just allow people to feel good about themselves for a day and then forget about charity and problems in the developing world for the rest of the year. My wife and I decided to support a child. We give a certain amount of money every month and this goes to pay for the education of a girl in Ethiopia. I would encourage your readers to support a child too. We don’t know if it is the best way to help, but at least it is something.

Yours faithfully,

Tom Blinson

29、   Imagine being handed a fake(假的) pill by your doctor to treat an illness. You would be pretty mad if you found out the pill was not a real medication, wouldn't you? Better yet, imagine the doctor tells you the pill is fake. At that point, you'd probably question whether the doctor even knows his staff at all. But wait, there's more to the story.

Ted Kaptchuk of Harvard University conducted an experiment to help treat irritable bowel syndrome(肠过敏性综合征) pain in 2010,in which he clearly marked the patients 'pills as “placebo”(安慰剂), or fake. Unbelievably, the group that was aware that it was receiving the placebo reported significant improvement in their condition.

Many of you probably know about the placebo effect. It's the idea that giving patients an ineffective treatment such as a sugar pill-for their condition might actually produce beneficial effects.

Why does it work? We don't really know. One theory is that the placebo causes your brain to have a response that flows down to other parts of the body. Placebos presented as stimulants(兴奋剂) tend to increase the heart rate and blood pressure, and those presented as depressants do the opposite.

In fact, the placebo effect can be compared to the experience of watching a horror movie. Although you know that what you're seeing isn't actually real, you most likely experience some pretty real effects such as increase in the heart rate and sweating.

Kaptchuk's work differed from the traditional placebo effect, in that he told the patients that the pill they were receiving was not real medicine. When the patients have this knowledge, the term" open-label placebo” is used. The resulting improvement' proved that in many cases, patients don't need to be tricked in order for the desired effects of a placebo to take place. In fact, the fake medication helped some patients so much that they requested additional pills after the experiment was over.

Of course, the natural question is: was this an extraordinary medical phenomenon, or just plain luck? That's why Kaptchuk and his team are attempting to do a seven-week trial before introducing the results to cancer survivors to treat severe tiredness caused by the aftereffects of the disease.

1The first paragraph of the article implies that____

A.doctors have poor medical ethics B.fake medicines are sold in hospitals

C.patients don't really trust doctors D.we may have a wrong idea of fake pills

2According to the passage," the placebo effect" refers to the idea of ____

A.taking fake pills to feel much better B.using sugar pills to treat the patients

C.benefiting patients with real medicines D.treating patients in an ineffective way

3What is the writer going to discuss next?

A.Why does the placebo effect work in real life? B.How will they carry out the seven-week trial?

C.Will a fake medication really exist in the world? D.Are patients being totally treated with fake pills?

四、短文填空(共1题,共 5分)

31、

The meaning of silence varies among cultural group. Silence may be 1, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every 2 with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of 3 among people, just at some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore when a person from one of these culture is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be 4 is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these culture, silence is a call for 5.

Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with 6 among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show 7between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority(权威)rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.

Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the 8 meanings of silence wen they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own persona and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not 9 too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing 10 of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.
