二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

26、   It is very common for a classroom to have a world map on the wall. However, a new map, called the AuthaGraph World Map, might replace the old maps. 1 This surprised many because earlier winners of the important award have been things like robots and mobility chairs.

But this map is very special, because it is more accurate than the maps you have used at school. This is because it is difficult to copy the 3-D, spherical surface (球面) of the world onto a 2-D map. 2 This means places like North America look much bigger than they really are. North America looks the same size as Africa, even though Africa is much bigger. 3

Many people have tried to fix this problem, but until now they haven’t been successful.

4Created by Japanese designer Hajime Narukawa, it cuts the globe into 96 equal triangles and puts them into a tetrahedron (四面体) shape. In this way, the designer keeps the proportions (比例) of the land and water the same when going from a 3-D sphere to a 2-D map.

The map is already being used in Japanese school textbooks. According to the Good Design Award judges, it is the best example of what the planet really looks like. 5

A.It recently won Japan’s 2016 Good Design Award.

B.That means the body of the world has been changed.

C.Bodies of water and land are distorted (变形) because of this.

D.It recently becomes very popular in Japan and catch much attention.

E.The AuthaGraph World Map appears to have solved the problem using geometry(几何学).

F.Similarly, Alaska looks bigger than Brazil, even if Brazil is more than five times bigger in real life.

G.However, they did suggest increasing the accuracy further by cutting the world into even smaller pieces.

27、The population of the capital Luxembourg City doubles every working day thanks to the flood of workers, and in the morning and evening rush hours, there often comes traffic block. It’s a familiar difficult problem but here they’ve come up with a novel solution.

From next year public transport will be free for everyone. The number of people taking the public transport is far from what is expected and so this idea has been brought up, which of course results in some argument.

This is what’s being built, a new tram system that will link trains in park-and-ride programs designed to make free public transport smooth and attractive. This is a big attempt by the Luxembourg government into whether people can be made to change the way they behave, because free public transport is great for existing commuters. But the question is whether drivers can be persuaded to change their cars and traffic jams for commuting on public transport.

The designer firmly believes the system is so good and effective. Everyone will want to use it. Everyone can use it, young or old, rich or poor, and everyone can say to themselves it’s better to leave the car at home. But others consider it questionable.

Taxi drivers don’t seem worried about trams stealing their trade. Businessmen who come here are never going to take public transport. They’ll take a taxi because they have meetings to get to.

So Luxembourg’s plan is really a test, and it’s one that plenty of bigger nations will be watching. As we know, the way we move around shapes our cities, our lives, our work and our environment. Luxembourg is a very small country but this could be a very big idea.

【1】Why does Luxembourg City plan to make public transport free?

A.To reduce traffic jams.

B.To attract more businessmen.

C.To encourage people to avoid rush hours.

D.To help its citizens travel more comfortably.

【2】What can we infer about the result of the plan?

A.Taxi drivers’ business will be badly affected.

B.More people will choose to drive to and from work.

C.People’s daily behavior will be completely changed.

D.Taking public transport can save money for commuters.

【3】How does the designer feel about the system?

A.Hopeless.

B.Concerned.

C.Confident.

D.Regretful.

【4】What’s the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A.To list the traffic problems Luxembourg faces.

B.To show how Luxembourg controls its population.

C.To give people advice on how to get around Luxembourg.

D.To introduce Luxembourg’s new public transport measure.

28、   What do you usually do when you have some free time? Do you take part in any form of hobby? If your answer is no, then you should think twice. Experiencing some type of interest or hobby might be the Ideal way to develop your brain an improve your creative thinking.

Here is a common problem that many older people have. They have spent such a great deal of time raising their family that once their children are grown and left home, they all of a sudden start to experience their age. Quite often, it is not their age that is the concern. It is the fact that they are unexpected offered more time on their hands.

When you put in too much time not doing anything, this can affect your brain. This is just where the expressions “If you don’t use it, you lose it” definitely is the truth. Your mind needs working out much like any other muscle in your body. This is why getting a hobby matters. It offers you something to do and is a perfect way to meet new people.

Enjoying a hobby is also a perfect way to improve creative thinking at any age. Even young children can profit from taking a new hobby. For retired people, enjoying a hobby which they can find entertainment in with their grandchildren will help keep them active and feeling young at heart.

Several hobbies that are terrific for both your mind and your body include yoga, biking, swimming and golf. If you aren’t fond of sports, even taking a walk regularly is a wonderful way to keep active. It helps you to appreciate fresh scenery and it has been suggested that the colors green and blue help make you more creative.

As you can see above, you can get pretty much from taking a hobby. With so many choices waiting for you, begin your journey right away!

29、   Researchers at UCLA Medical Center found that a 12-minute bed-side visit with a dog can help reduce anxiety levels by 24 percent in heart failure patients, compared to a 10 percent drop when patients had a visit from a human volunteer, and no drop in patients who had no visit.

Results of the 76-patient study were presented last week. The study was supported by a non-profit (非盈利)organization which promotes human-animal interaction and connection. In the study, effects of dog and volunteer visits were compared with those of volunteers only, and with patients who had no visits and stayed at rest. Patients were asked to answer a list of questions before and after the visits. The results suggested improved heart function, and the most obvious reaction was seen in anxiety levels.

“The first thing you notice is that the patient’s facial expression, changes to a smile and the pressure of the world seems to be lifted off their shoulders,” study author Kathy Cole said. Feelings of disappointment and helplessness are common among heart patients, Cole said, and just three nights in a hospital is enough to make some patients feel anxious and uncomfortable. During the visit, the furry friend is allowed to lie on the bed next to the patient with its head within two feet of the patient’s. Most patients petted the dog, while others talked about the dog with human volunteers in conversation.

Dogs used in the study are specially trained dogs that go through a series of trainings. There are different kinds of dogs. Researchers used everything from Bernese mountain dogs to small schnauzers. However, a dog doesn’t have to be specially trained to have a calming effect on a person. In fact, the animal doesn’t even have to be a dog in order to help. “As long as the animal has meaning to the patient, or a relationship with the patient, it can help calm the patient,” Cole said.
