26、   When we talk to our friends online, typing can become a little boring.More often than not,we turn to memes(表情包)to make our conversations more fun. But sometimes, sending the wrong meme can mean trouble.

At least 10 students who were admitted to Harvard University lost their chance to study there after posting offensive memes in a private Facebook group, the university’s student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, reported on June 5.In fact, this was not the first time Harvard had dealt with a case like this. Instead of regular jokes, the memes “went to truly dark and ugly places, joking about Orthodox Jews, the Holocaust and Mexican children,” reported CNN.

At first, the group was meant for would-be Harvard freshmen to get to know each other before they began university. But later, some students set up another group where they traded several offensive memes. When Harvard University found out about the group, it took back the students’ offers.

The incident has caused fierce debates, both in the university and around the world.

“I appreciate humor, but there are so many topics that just should not be joked about.” incoming freshman Jessica Zhang told the Harvard Crimson. “I do not know how those offensive images could be defended.”

However, others believe the university overstepped the boundaries. “It sounds like Harvard is intruding too deeply into the private lives of students, ”Alan Dershowitz, a retired Harvard Law School professor, told The Guardian, “It may affect them for life.”

The university didn’t explain the decision to withdraw the offers, saying it doesn’t comment publicly on the admission of individual applicants. But one of Harvard’s own policies says it has the right to withdraw offers of acceptance if “an admitted student engages in behavior that brings into question his or her honesty, maturity,or moral character”, according to the Harvard Crimson.

27、   People made wings and strapped them to their arms. They flapped their arms but couldn’t fly. They built gliders(滑翔机), light aircraft with wings. Some didn’t work, but some did.

The gliders that worked had special wings. These wings were arched on both the top and the bottom. The air pulled the wings from above and pushed the wings from below. When the wings went up, so did the glider! Arched wings help create a force called lift. Lift is the force that keeps the gliders in the air.

Most gliders have long, thin wings. The wings create enough lift to carry the aircraft and its passengers. Gliders usually ride currents of air the same way a hawk soars(飞翔).

Gliders are very light, and long wings and air currents can give them enough lift to fly. But to carry more than just a passenger or two, an aircraft needs a lot more lift. The question is: How do you create more lift?

The engine is the answer!

The engine is a machine that changes energy into movement. The forward movement that an airplane needs to fly is called thrust. More thrust makes an airplane move forward faster. Moving faster creates more lift. And with more lift, an airplane can carry more weight so an aircraft with an engine can carry passengers or cargo.

In 1903 the Wright brothers figured out how to get wings and an engine to work together in order to give an airplane enough thrust to fly. They made the first powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Since then people have made airplanes that can fly faster than sound can travel. They have made airplanes that can fly all the way around the world without stopping.

Today, thousands of people travel in airplanes every day. People really have learned how to fly!

1If a flyer wants to stay in the air, it needs enough ________.

A.lift B.thrust

C.wings D.engines

2What made the flyers moving forward in the sky?

A.The air. B.The lift.

C.The thrust. D.The wind.

3An airplane can carry heavy weight and fly very fast mostly because of ________.

A.the lift B.the thrust

C.the sound D.the engine

4The whole passage mainly tells us ________.

A.how gliders were built B.how important the engine was

C.how people learned to fly D.how the first airplane was made

28、   When I was a boy, my parents and I traveled from New York City to the Pennsylvania countryside for a week-long taste of rural life. We stayed in guest house on a farm, joining the daily routine and eating meals with the farmer and his family. We got up early to the cows as they were milked. I even tried my hand at milking one, and then joined the farmer as he released the cows into the field afterwards.

Decades later I still have vivid memories of that trip which made me realize the value of a vacation, seeing new things, meeting new people and sharing memorable experiences with family members. To this day, I still consider that family trip when I plan to take time off with my wife and kids. Vacations are a time for resting and connecting. As a bank manager, I spent much of my workday encouraging my customers to save their money. One of the reasons give is that we should all have enough money for family vacation every year. In our busy lives, family is what we should save our money and time for.

For my family, our vacation starts when we begin planning the trip. We talk about destinations and our budget ahead of time. Among the things we discuss: Can we save money by renting a house instead of spending six nights in a hotel Would it be better to buy groceries and good for ourselves rather than eat out every night? Involving the kids in planning the vacation makes sure that they have a great vacation too. I prefer to visit historical sites and museums while they love to fish and swim. So build in some relaxation time for us all so that the vacation can work for everyone.

Each year, setting aside vacation time to spend together is especially important to us. A relaxing environment opens door to all kinds of conversations---deep, silly or meaningful. There is no pleasure from the usual everyday tasks. What matters is that everyone is having a great time.

1Why did the author and his parents go to the countryside when he was young?

A.To milk the cows. B.To meet the farmer and his family.

C.To experience country life. D.To enjoy the scenery.

2What would the author encourage his customers to save their money for?

A.For family vacations. B.For better investment.

C.For children’s education. D.For traveling alone.

3What is this passage mainly about?

A.The author had a good time in the countryside.

B.The author advised others to spend vacations with their families.

C.The author tried to enjoy the holidays with his family.

D.The author realized the values of a family vacation and put it into practice.

29、An electric flying vehicle called Skai was on display yesterday near Los Angeles, California. Skai is made by Alaka'i Technologies. The vehicle has six rotors(旋翼) on top. Inside, there are seats for five passengers. To many people, Skai looks like a cross between a giant drone(无人机) and a car. Alaka'i Technologies hopes the vehicle will one day serve as a flying taxi, a cargo carrier, and an ambulance.

Other companies, such as Boeing and Airbus, are also designing electric aircraft. They are using batteries to power them. But batteries can weigh the vehicles down.

Skai uses hydrogen fuel cells to power its rotors. Hydrogen fuel cells are a lighter alternative to batteries. They allow the vehicle to transport 1,000 pounds. They might also be less damaging to the environment. "It's the cleanest form of energy on the planet," Bruce Holmes told Digital Trends, a technology news website. Holmes is on the board of Alaka'i Technologies.

A test flight will take place near the company's Massachusetts headquarters. But it may be years before the autonomous aircraft is cleared to carry passengers. Skai must first meet regulations. These regulations are set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

"The technology is interesting, but the regulatory (监管的) road will be very long," Thaddeus Lightfoot said. Lightfoot is a lawyer. He helps companies deal with FAA rules.

Alaka'i Technologies is hopeful that Skai will get FAA approval to fly passengers soon. In the meantime, the company's CEO, Stephen Hanvey, says the craft could be used to transport food and water. It could also serve as a mobile cell tower in places struck by natural disasters.
