二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Photosynthesis(光合作用)is a unique skill of green plants-they turn water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and food via sunlight. A group of Chinese scientists, however, ”copied” the process on animals.

To understand the new breakthrough, it is important to know how photosynthesis works Plants take in carbon dioxide and water from the air and soil. Within the plant cell, the water is oxidized. This transforms the water into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose (葡萄糖). The plant then releases the oxygen back into the air and stores energy within the glucose molecules.

In the study, the researchers from Zhejiang University developed an independent and controllable photosynthetic system, according to the study published in Nature in early December. They separated thylakoids, a part of the cell where light reactions take place in plants, from young spinach(菠菜)leaves. The scientists then wrapped the thylakoids with the cover of animal cells, which made the implanted thylakoids more acceptable to foreign bodies.

The mice used in the study were suffering from arthritis(关节炎)meaning cells in their cartilage had degenerated and could not be repaired by themselves. With the thylakoids implanted into the mice and exposed to light, the mice recovered. Their metabolism(新陈代谢)returned to normal.

In arthritis, the patients usually have energy loss since fewer energy-carrying molecules are generated. The implant, however, can correct the imbalance by storing more energy via photosynthesis.

The researchers also claimed that their tests would have medical usage. It can be used as part of solution for degenerative diseases because the natural photosynthesis system my repair cells. It may also delay the aging process in cells.

The study showed an exciting achievement that opens up possibilities of metabolism engineering” commented one of the paper’s reviewers Francisco Cejudo from the University of Seville in Spain, reported Xinhua.

22、Harry potter and The Hunger Games haven’t been big hits for nothingLots of teens still read quite a lotBut a study shows a clear decrease over timeNearly half of 17-year-olds say they read for pleasure no more than one or two times a yearThat’s way down from ten years ago.

The digital revolution (革命) means there are more platforms (平台) than ever to read onJim Steyer has been studying the effect of technology on childrenHe has four kids and has seen the trend most with his 16-year-oldI start to see it in our 10-year-old as well, because he is reading less and less, and more and more attracted to some of the digital media platforms that he has access to, and that he didn’t have access to when he was 6 or 7 years old, he says.

The studies don’t say that kids are reading less because they’re spending more time onlineBut Steyer is convinced that’s at least part of the answer.

First of all, most children now have access to e-readers, or other smart electronic devices like phones and tablets (平板电脑), he says And they’re spending time on thatMany reports show the increasing use of new technology platforms by kidsIt just strikes me as extremely logical that that’s a big reason.

Researchers want to know more about how teens are spending their time in the digital ageBut Kathryn Zickuhr of the Pew Research Center says it’s trickyIf a kid is looking at a book, you may think he or she is readingBut when it comes to looking at a smartphone or tablet, who knows?

We’ve heard from middle and high school teachers that sometimes the Internet is wonderful for enthusiastic students to do deep research, says ZickuhrBut on the other side, obviously there are many distractions on the Internet.

However, Jim Steyer says, Kids with parents who read, who buy or take books out of the library for their kids, and who then set time aside in their kids’ daily schedule for reading, tend to read the most whether it’s on a book, an e-book or some other devices.

1What did Jim Steyer see in his four kids?

A They tend to read more on electronic devices.

B They created their own digital media platform.

C They improved their reading on electronic devices.

D They have become more addicted to digital media.

2What statement may Kathryn Zickuhr agree to?

A Kids are easily distracted on the Internet.

B Most kids pretend to be doing online reading.

C Most kids like to read on a smartphone or tablet.

D Kids rarely use the Internet to do serious research.

3The last paragraph suggests that ________.

A parents need to spare time to read for kids

B parents should make a reading plan for kids

C parents can do a lot to encourage more reading

D parents working in a library tend to read the most

4What is the main idea of the text?

A What books do teens like to read the most?

B Why aren’t teens reading like they used to?

C How can teens read on electronic platforms?

D When will teens turn to books for fun again?

23、We’ve had weather forecasts for decades. Forecasting our near-term health is far tougher. Yet knowing early that we may get the flu or COVID-19 could be greatly helpful. The good news: Wearable technology, such as smartwatches, is beginning to provide just such early warnings.

Jessilyn Dunn is a biomedical engineer at Duke University. She was part of a team that analyzed heart rates and other data from wearable devices. The smartwatch-like systems contain sensors. These collect data—lots and lots of them—that can point to health or disease.

Dunn’s team asked volunteers to wear sensor-laden wristbands (手环) before and after they received a cold or flu virus. At least once per second, these wristbands recorded heart rates, body movements, skin temperatures and more. In nine out of every 10 subjects, these data showed signs of developing illness at least a day before symptoms(症状)emerged.

Dunn’s group compared the sensor data from infected and noninfected people by giving 31 of the 49 volunteers nose drops with a flu virus. The remaining people were exposed to a common cold virus.

A computer algorithm (算法) was developed to go through mountains of data in search of patterns that signaled emerging disease. Some data were measured more than 30 times per second. That means up to 19 million data points.

All possible combinations of sensor data and time points were tested to look for the biggest difference between infected and noninfected people. The final model accurately predicted infections nine times in every ten.

This early warning, says Dunn, can head off severe symptoms that otherwise would send patients into hospitals. And knowing you’re sick before you have symptoms can reduce the chance of spreading your disease.

Is the system ready for the real world? According to Stacey Cherry, expert from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, “This is exciting but also very initial. Much more work is needed before this approach can be rolled out widely.”

【1】Which of the following is true?

A.31 volunteers were infected with cold virus on purpose.

24、 Security—for the information on your smartphone, as well as for the phone itself---is a hot topic these days. The truth is that you’re packing a lot of sensitive information on your phone, and you should keep it safe.

When it comes to physical security, iPhone users would do well to download Find My iPhone, a free app from Apple that allows you to visit a website and see your (lost, stolen or misplaced) phone on the map. You can then sound an alarm, send a message that will pop up on its screen, lock the phone or erase all your data.

Android does not have an exact equivalent(等价物), but there are plenty of alternatives. A free app called Lookout offers the find-my-phone feature. The paid version allows you to wipe the data from your phone remotely.

Then there is your coffee shop’s WiFi network. Anyone with minimal technical expert skill can snoop on(窥视) people using shared wireless networks, harvesting passwords and other personal data. Lookout’s apps will caution you when you’ve logged on to an insecure network, but cannot protect you once you’re there.

In order to protect yourself on such networks, you can use a virtual private network, or V.P.N. This turns all your activity into nonsense to anyone trying to read along with you from across the Starbucks. It also keeps websites from tracking you and, if you’re traveling, allows you to get access to sites that may be blocked in other countries.

If you have an iPhone, the simplest V.P.N. app is probably Hotspot Shield, whose distinguishing feature is said to be that it automatically kicks in each time you start browsing (浏览), as opposed to other V.P.N. apps that require you to start them up manually(手动). This matters, because even if you decide you want a V.P.N. app, you want to spend approximately zero time thinking about it. For the most part, that was true of Hotspot Shield, though occasionally it took a while to connect or temporarily lost connection without warning. I found myself having to turn the app on and off sometimes, which involved setting my phone constantly.

If even reading about the setting on your phone drives you crazy, then it is probably best to stay away from a V.P.N. app. But if you’re the type who can’t resist checking your bank balance from your comer bar, the hassle (麻烦) may be preferable to the risk.

【1】 Which of the following can warn you against the insecure network?

A. Android B. V.P.N.

C. Lookout D. Find My iPhone

【2】By using V.P.N., users can ________.

A. find their lost phone on the Internet

B. remove all the data form the phone remotely

C. check the bank balance now and then

D. save their browsing from being tracked

【3】The underlined word “that” in Para.6 refers to the fact that _________.

A. a V.P.N. app kicks in automatically

B. the users starts V.P.N. apps manually

C. the app take a while to connect

D. users spend no time thinking about it
