二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、In my first week as a graduate student at Cambridge University in 1964 I met with a fellow student, two years ahead of me in his studies; he was unsteady on his feet and spoke with great difficulty. This was Stephen Hawking.I learned that he had a bad disease and might not live long enough even to finish his PhD degree.

But, amazingly, he has reached the age of 73.Even mere survival would have been a medical miracle, but of course, he didn’t merely survive. He has become arguably the most famous scientist in the world for his brilliant research, for his bestselling books, and, above all, for his astonishing victory over hardship.

Stephen received his “death sentence” in 1964, when I thought it was hard for him to go on with his study.Stephen went from Albans School to Oxford University. He was said to be a “lazy” undergraduate, but his brilliance earned him a first   class degree, an “entry ticket” to a research career in Cambridge and a uniquely inspiring achievement.Within a few years of the burst of his disease he was wheelchair   bound, and his speech was so unclear that it could only be understood by those who knew him well. But his scientific career went from strength to strength: he quickly came up with a series of insights into the nature of black holes (then a very new idea) and how the universe began. In 1974 he was elected to the Royal Society at the exceptionally early age of 32.

The great advances in science generally involve discovering a link between phenomena that were previously conceptually unconnected for instance, Isaac Newton realized that the force making an apple fall to earth was the same as the force that holds the moon and planets in their orbits.Stephen’s revolutionary idea about a link between gravity and quantum(量子) theory has still not been tested. However, it has been hugely influential; indeed, one of the main achievements of string theory(弦理论) has been to confirm and build on his idea.He has undoubtedly done more than anyone else since Einstein to improve our knowledge of gravity and he is one of the top   ten living theoretical physicists.

A.in the early 1940s

C.in the early 1930s

D.in the late 1930s

22、When I was a boy there were no smart phones, computers were something you saw on STAR TREK, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playgrounds whose adventures were only limited by my imagination. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and slowly walking around it. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old, one lane, dirt road that I had never seen before. I immediately set out to travel it. It was full of muddy tire tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.

I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I am sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear to turn around and head back home but I was stubborn and even a bit stupid, so I walked on. The dirt road gave way to a gravel one and then a paved one, yet there was still neither a car nor a house in sight. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road in the dark of night, but I was sure it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.

I continued to walk on with the something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. My heart leapt up! I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.

I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on Earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love. May you always help your fellow travelers along the way. And may your roads always lead you Home again.

23、Finding success in blended learning

Blended (混合的) learning offers students flexibility as it is a mixture between remote and face-to-face learning where you can set your own learning pace.

Create a planner

Instead of doing everything just before a deadline, blended learning models motivate you to set and follow a continual learning schedule. 【1】 Having an optimized (最优化的) planner allows you to use your time smartly while increasing your productivity, decreasing your stress levels and having more time for yourself.

Set priorities

Once you have a daily planner filled with upcoming assignments and planned lessons, it’s time to apply the ABCDE method. If you have to complete four online assignments before tomorrow, mark the most important tasks with “A”, the second most important tasks with “B”, and so on. 【2】

Do not multitask

Multitasking can greatly reduce your focus levels and lead to cognitive ability impairment (障碍).【3】, especially when you’re in the middle of an online course, and a notice pops up. While preparing for a face-to-face lesson or doing assignments online, use an extension that blocks distracting websites.

【4】

The most significant benefits of the mind map studying approach are that memorization of visuals (视觉资料) is easier than whole sections of text, complex topics are broken into smaller ideas, and you can improve your writing.

Track study time

Setting an actual time in a day when you’re going to focus on studying is extremely important. The blended learning model includes completing a part of your lessons at your own pace, making it easy to lose track of your progress. Track your studying time with a time tracker and, during tracking periods, just focus on the task in front of you.

Don’t forget friends and hobbies

Blended learning can be stressful and challenging, but it gives you a flexibility that traditional education lacks. 【5】 If you know how to organize yourself and prioritize your university obligations, you’ll have more than enough time to form meaningful relationships, try new hobbies, and find your true passion despite the ongoing pandemic.

A.But it can be hard to avoid multitasking

B.You may also find mind maps useful.

C.When you complete all “A” tasks, you can move to “B” tasks and so on.

D.Use mind maps

E.To excel in this method, create a study and activity planner for an upcoming week.

F.It’s essential to focus on all parts of your student life and avoid neglecting some aspects.

G.Only in this way can you finish the tasks effectively.

24、Many people rush into the commitment of bringing home a four-legged family member, only to find out that they are not ready for a pet. This often results in the dog being turned over to a shelter where it may not find another home. This can be avoided if potential pet owners take the time to figure out if they are truly ready for the responsibilities of pet ownership.

Being a responsible pet owner involves a financial commitment that goes beyond buying dog food. There are also parasite (寄生虫) prevention, boarding costs while traveling and the cost to care for the pet should it become ill or injured. That is not to say that one must be rich in order to have a dog, but it is important to be prepared for the expenses that come with being a pet owner.

Another consideration is the time commitment. An owner away from home for 14 hours every day is not an ideal situation for a dog. A potential dog owner must also consider the time it takes to care for his or her pet, the time it takes to feed, walk, play with, bathe and clean up. Also, dogs require attention. Be prepared to spend time each day petting and playing with it.

Dogs are dogs, and will act like dogs. This includes barking, digging, having accidents in the house and, possibly, destroying some of the owner’s prized possessions, such as furniture, shoes and cell phones. If the above would cause an owner to want to get rid of the dog, then he or she is not yet ready to be a pet owner. Many wonderful pets end up in shelters simply because they acted like dogs!

【1】Who might be qualified to be a dog owner, according to the text?

A. Jim, who has a daughter sensitive to dog’s smell.

B. Dick, a jobless teenager who can hardly pay his rent.

C. Kari, a teacher who works eight hours a day.

D. Steven, a business man who travels a lot on business.

【2】To be a responsible dog owner you need to do all the following EXCEPT _________.

A. finding a shelter for it when you are bored with it

B. buying dog food and feeding it

C. taking it to hospital when necessary

D. spending time each day playing with it

【3】What does the underlined part in the first paragraph probably mean?

A. Rush to adopt a dog formally.

B. Decide to be a pet owner without thinking about it carefully.

C. Run into a pet shelter and take one home so quickly.

D. Commit to buy a dog and take it home.

【4】 What might be the best title for the text?

A. Dogs Are Dogs B. Pets Are Family Members

C. Have Time for a Dog?   D. Ready for a Pet?
