二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Whether you prefer burning the midnight oil or going to bed early so you can get up at the break of dawn depends on your genes , according to experts.

I jump out of bed each morning, eager to start an active day. But I can hear my neighbour’s   alarm clock ringing non-stop every morning and I doubt he gets to work on time.

A lot of noise comes from his flat in the evening. He’s happy to stay up watching TV till after midnight, while I go to bed early and try to sleep.

Well, it might not be his fault after all. I’m called ‘a lark (百灵鸟)’ and my neighbour ‘an owl (猫头鹰)’.

We all have inside ‘clocks’ in the brain to control all kinds of bodily functions and it is reset every day by light. These inside clocks run to a different schedule in ‘larks’ and ‘owls’. If you have a fast clock, you like to do things early, and if you have a slow clock, you like to do things late.

Because we live in a 24/7 world, scientists believe it’s important to understand a person’s ‘chronotype’ the time of the day when they function the best. It could help us lead a healthier life.

A US professor has studied sleeping patterns and thinks work times should be changed and made more individual to fit in with our chronotypes.

And he has advice for those who can’t choose their working hours: “If that’s not possible, we should be more careful about light exposure”, says the professor. “You should try to go to work not in a covered vehicle but on a bike. The minute the sun sets we should use things that have no blue light, like computer screens and other electronic devices.”

22、   Amazon’s chief executive officer, Jeff Bezos, refused to address employees’ demands that the company take action on the climate crisis at its annual shareholder meeting.

About 50 members of the group Amazon Employees for Climate Justice attended the event, representing 7,700 staffers who signed a letter publicly urging Amazon to change its climate policy. Employees put forth a proposal (提议) at the meeting requesting a public report on climate change from Amazon’s board (董事会) of directors. The board suggested shareholders vote against it, and it was not passed.

After the proposal failed to pass, employees attempted to meet Jeff Bezos, who refused to meet with them.

“Jeff remained off-stage, ignored the employees and would not speak to them. Jeff’s inaction and lack of meaningful response indicated his dismissal of the climate crisis,” the group said in a statement after the event.

At a press conference following the shareholder meeting, the employees suggested Amazon should put forth a timeline for reaching a zero emission (排放) goal.

“Amazon has the scale and resources to spark the world’s imagination and lead the way on addressing the climate crisis. What we’re missing is the leadership from the very top of the company,” said Jamie Kowalski, a software engineer who co-filed the resolution and attended the shareholder meeting.

The proposal noted that other tech giants have released reports on their contributions to climate change and have committed to addressing concerns. Microsoft has been carbon neutral (碳中和), meaning it balances its carbon emissions with carbon removal. Google has been carbon neutral since 2007.

A spokesman from Amazon confirmed that none of the shareholder proposals outlined ahead of the vote were passed, including the request for a report on climate change. The employee group said in the press conference that the board’s standpoint on the proposal made it difficult to pass. They said they would continue to pressure Amazon.

1Why wasn’t the proposal from employees passed?

A.The board wasn’t in favour of it.

B.They didn’t provide all the details.

C.Some workers didn’t sign their names.

D.They didn’t seek Jeff Bezos’ approval first.

2What does the underlined word “dismissal” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A.Having curiosity. B.Having confidence.

C.Lack of attention. D.Lack of experience.

3What’s Jamie Kowalski’s attitude to Jeff Bezos?

A.Confused. B.Unconcerned.

C.Supportive. D.Disappointed.

4Why did the proposal mention Microsoft and Google?

A.To show other companies have taken action.

B.To show Amazon will follow other companies.

C.To show all companies are facing great pressure.

D.To show big companies care less about the environment.

23、2022 Earthshot Prize Winners Announced

Last Friday, Britain’s Prince William announced the winners of this year’s Earthshot Prize. Each prize-winner won $1.2 million for their efforts. Below are some of this year’s prize-winning projects.

Protect and Restore Nature

Kheyti won the prize for protecting and restoring nature with its “Greenhouse-in-a-box” idea. The company provides a simple, large greenhouse to small farmers at a low cost. The greenhouse helps protect crops from insects and other pests. It also helps the crops survive extreme weather conditions, Kheyti is already working with 1, 000 farmers across India.

Clean Our Air

Charlot Magayi won the prize for cleaning the air. After her daughter was burned by a charcoal-burning stove, Ms. Magayi developed a safer, cleaner stove, called the Mukuru Clean Stove. Ms. Magayi’s stoves use a different fuel that’s cheaper and pollutes far less than charcoal stoves. Currently, over 200,000 Mukuru Clean Stoves are being used in Kenya.

Build a Waste-Free World

A London-based company called Notpla (for “Not Plastic”) won the prize for building a waste-free world. They’ve created a plastic substitute from seaweed. This year alone, the company has made one million Notpla takeaway food boxes, replacing similar plastic-coated boxes.

24、I rushed to the back of the ambulance before I thought to fasten my seat belt as our ambulance dashed down the road. My legs trembled uncontrollably as I felt around for boxes of gloves and passed them to the rest of the crew. Despite my jumpy nerves, I felt a thrill. Here I was, on my first real call after three months of training.

We pulled up to the scene and I jumped out, feeling official and important at having arrived in such style. As we approached the patient, we saw the terrible scene, but the two emergency workers with me were prepared. One immediately began treating the patient while the other calmed the anxious family. I was asked to give breaths to the patient while a worker did chest compressions (按压).

Though I agreed, my excitement and nervousness disappeared as I felt the gravity of the situation. This person’s life was in my hands. For the next 20 minutes the emergency workers and I counted breaths and compressions, occasionally switching positions. We continued administering CPR for the whole of the rough ride to the hospital and I grew increasingly alarmed since the patient was not responding.

Arriving at the emergency room, we knew it was over. My first call, my first chance to save someone, but I failed. I was horrified. A complete stranger had died before my eyes, under my care. The doctors comforted me, and though I felt responsible, I soon realized that there was nothing we could have done to change the result. Our CPR technique had been sound, but the reality was that the chances of life after a heart arrest were very slim.

As the initial shock wore off, a strong motivation to go on another emergency call replaced it. Watching life turn into death is not an easy experience to forget, but it can create a thirst to try again and perhaps save a life the next time. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the chance hasn’t yet happened. The worst call I’ve had since that first day is a twisted ankle.

【1】Why did the author feel nervous and excited on the ambulance?

A.He could assist his partners.

B.He didn’t fasten his seat belt.

C.He was driving the ambulance.

D.He was doing his first emergency task.

【2】It can be learned from the text that the patient .

A.called the ambulance himself

B.responded instantly to the treatment

C.was in danger of life on the way to hospital

D.was dead due to the delay of the ambulance

【3】What can be learned from the fourth paragraph?

A.The doctors cared little about the patient.

B.Patients suffering a heart arrest rarely survived.

C.The author was responsible for the patient’s death.

D.The emergency workers used the wrong CPR technique.
