二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   Earthworms were the beginning of a childhood dream for Jane Goodall. Her mother told a story of going to Goodall’s room when she was one and a half years old.

“She’d found I’d taken a whole handful of earthworms to bed with me,” Goodall said, “and instead of getting mad, she said very quietly, ‘They’ll die if you leave them here, they need dirt.’ So together we took them back into the garden.”

“I never went to university after school because we couldn’t afford it,” she said. Since college was impossible, she got a secretarial job with Louis Leakey, the famed biologist.

It was in the Serengeti plains that Leakey realized Goodall was capable of much more than a secretary. “He just saw that I was very passionate about being out in the wilderness and animals and that I was a good observer,” Goodall said. “Most important of all, he could see I had patience and that I knew how to behave out in the bush even though I hadn’t grown up there.”

Leakey sent Goodall to Tanzania to observe chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in the wild in hopes that their behavior could help explain his research on early humans. Goodall was met with challenges when she faced the chimpanzees. “My first encounters with the chimpanzees were disastrous because they ran away immediately at the sight of me,” Goodall said.

Goodall was surprised by the chimps’love for one another and the bonds between families. She also was surprised when she witnessed one chimpanzee removing the leaves from a small branch and using it as a tool to catch ants.

“At that time, we were defined as the only tool—making creature on the planet,” Goodall said. Goodall sent a telegram to Leakey, who famously replied, “Scientists are faced with two alternatives: Either accept chimpanzees as man, by definition, or else redefine man.” “There is no sharp line dividing us from the rest of the animal kingdom,” Goodall said. “It’s a very blurry (模糊的)line, and it teaches us so clearly that we are not separate from the rest of the animal kingdom, but part of it.”

At 86 years old, Goodall still is educating, discovering and working to bridge the gap between man and chimpanzee.

1The story of earthworms showed Goodall’s mother knew______.

A.how to raise earthworms in the garden B.how to take care of small creatures

C.how to get Goodall interested in animals D.how to give support to her daughter

2What did Louis Leakey see in Goodall?

A.The talent for observing animals. B.The interest in living in the wilderness.

C.The ability to hide in the bush. D.The patience to look after animals.

3Which of the following may Goodall agree with?

A.Humans are completely different from animals.

B.Humans are the only animals to make tools.

C.Humans belong to the whole animal kingdom.

D.Humans have to accept chimps as man too.

4What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Goodall found interest in observing chimps.

B.Goodall devoted her life to studying chimps.

C.Goodall was inspired by her mother to study chimps.

D.Goodall gave up college to observe animals in the wild.

22、   More than half of the state’s public school students are in districts offering remote learning, but state Superintendent (主管) of Public Institution, Chris Reykdal acknowledged to state lawmakers that distance learning is not working for a lot of kids. He is also worried about the mental health impacts of distance learning on kids.

“They’re failing a lot. And it turns out, in the beginning, we thought it was about devices and connectivity. They’re failing because they’re not engaged,” Reykdal said.

Reykdal’s assessment comes at a critical time, with an increasing number of calls from parents pushing for school districts to bring students back for face-to-face learning. They say their children are losing motivation, falling behind academically.

State officials have been in the process of considering revising the guidance to encourage in-person learning, because research has so far shown that schools do not appear to encourage community spread of coronavirus.

Lawmakers also heard from several school district superintendents. One of them, Art Jarvis of the Peninsula School District, echoed what Reykdal said about students struggling with remote learning. “We’re seeing more evidence that social-emotional issues ranging from disengagement with the schools to suicidal tendencies that come with it need to be addressed.”Jarvis said.

He urged lawmakers to preserve education funding even though statewide public school enrollment (入学) has dropped 37 percent this school year, which would mean a cut of about $500 million in state funding. The Peninsula district is providing in-person leaning for students in Kindergarten and first grade, but he said it’s expensive to staff that.

“In spite of lost enrollment in kindergarten and first grade, we had to add 11 teaching positions for K-1 in  the Peninsula School District at a cost of over $1 million. And the added teachers are necessary to keep student groups small to allow for physical distancing.” Jarvis said.

1What mainly leads to students’ poor academic performance in distance learning?

A.Devices and connectivity.

B.Disengagement with schools.

C.Poor mental health.

D.Insufficient learning materials.

2Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Students are reluctant to go back to school.

B.Lawmakers advocate providing distance learning.

C.Parents are looking forward to kids' returning to school.

D.State officials forbid in-person learning for students' health.

3What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

A.Evidence.

B.Assessment.

C.In-person learning.

D.Remote learning.

4What Jarvis said in the last paragraph is intended to___________.

A.encourage more kids to enroll in school

B.call on parents to donate money to schools

C.attract more teachers to in-person learning

D.discourage lawmakers from cutting education funding

23、   Do you want something different for dinner? Try some space food. Many scientists are living for months aboard the International Space Station high above the earth. It's too expensive to carry food to feed people living in space. Therefore, people in space will need to grow food for themselves. But how can they grow food without soil and sunlight?

Today, we already have hydroponic vegetables. The science of hydroponics is not new. Many writers believe that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were actually a large hydroponic system. This system could have used fresh water that was rich in oxygen and minerals for the plants. Hydroponic systems need light. In addition to sunlight, hydroponic farms can use artificial lights. Instead of soil, hydroponic farms use mixtures of chemicals to feed the plants. And in addition to a natural climate, most hydroponic farms often use greenhouses. One advantage of hydroponics is that diseases and insects that travel through the soil are avoided. Another advantage is there are no weeds to pull out.

Farmers know how to grow a few kinds of hydroponic vegetables, such as lettuces, tomatoes, and cucumbers. But in space, people will need to eat more than salad. So scientists are learning how to grow hydroponic rice, beans and potatoes. As they do these experiments, they are analyzing their results and examining how to apply these results to a real life situation providing tasty meals for space travelers.

The scientists make imitation meat dishes, such as carrot drumsticks, made from carrots, garlic, and bread, instead of chicken. How do these unusual foods taste? The scientists have been inviting a group of taste testers into their laboratories. So far, they have tested 200 different recipes. The carrot drumstick dish was a hit. Perhaps soon, people will eat meals made from hydroponic vegetables that are truly out of this world.

1Why do scientists grow space food?

A.To reduce food costs. B.To support space travelers.

C.To find new varieties of food. D.To increase agricultural production.

2What is a must to grow hydroponic vegetables?

A.Sunlight. B.Warm weather.

C.Soil to grow the plants in. D.Chemicals to feed the plants.

3What is one advantage of hydroponic plants?

A.They don't get diseases. B.They aren't affected by weeds.

C.They can grow in a lightless place. D.They are bigger than common ones.

4What is the author's attitude towards scientists' space food experiment?

A.Uninterested. B.Doubtful. C.Optimistic. D.Cautious.

24、Can staying up late make you fat? A growing body of research has suggested that poor sleep quality is linked to an increased risk of obesity (肥胖症). But a new study found that it’s not the sleep loss that leads to obesity, but rather that overweight can cause poor sleep. The researchers discovered their findings in a very small worm, called C.elegans.

Study co-author David Raizen stressed that while these findings in worms may not translate directly to humans, C. elegans offers a good model for studying humans' sleep. Like all other animals that have nervous systems, they need sleep. But unlike humans, who have complex neural circuitry (神经回路) and are difficult to study, a C. elegans has only 302 nerve cells, one of which scientists know for certain is a sleep regulator.

In humans, people who get fewer than six hours of sleep per night are more likely to be obese. Moreover, starvation in humans, fruit flies, and worms has been shown to affect sleep, indicating that it is regulated, at least in part, by nutrient availability. However, the way in which sleeping and eating work in tandem (协同地) has remained unclear.

The researchers genetically changed C.elegans to “turn off" a nerve cell that controls sleep. These worms could still eat, breathe, and reproduce, but they lost their ability to sleep. With this nerve cell turned off,the researchers saw a severe drop in ATP levels, which is the body's energy currency. “That suggests that sleep is an attempt to conserve energy; it's not actually causing the loss of energy,"Raizen explained.

The researchers knocked out the KIN-29 gene to create sleepless worms, and the mutant (突变的) C.elegans accumulated much fat. They assumed that the KIN-29 mutants did not sleep is because they were unable to release their fat.To test this guess, the researchers again controlled the KIN-29 mutant worms, this time expressing a chemical substance that freed their fat. With that operation, the worms were again able to sleep.

【1】What did the new study focus on?

A.The risk of suffering obesity.

B.The way our body consumes energy.

C.The link between obesity and sleep loss.

D.The cause for poor sleep and obesity.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Obesity.

B.Nutrition.

C.Starvation.

D.Sleep.

【3】Why did the researchers turn off one nerve cell of the C.elegans?

A.To monitor its sleep quality.

B.To regulate the change of ATP.

C.To confirm the function of sleep.

D.To find out factors affecting energy conservation.

【4】What might lead to obese people's sleeping problem according to the researchers?

A.That their body fat fails to be freed normally.

B.That their ATP level may be greatly raised.

C.That their brain signals for sleeping go wrong.

D.That their KIN-29 gene is knocked out quickly.
