21、In April 2014,the world's oldest known message in a bottle was discovered floating in theBaltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.
A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel,Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.
The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17,1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的),thereadable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage.
From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group,he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter,Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.
“It was almost unbelievable,”Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message.“That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."
Erdmann never knew her grandfather, who died in 1946,but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.
The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1 .After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.
Previously, the oldest message found in a bottle spent nearly 98 years at sea and was discovered in April 2012,according to Guinness World Records.

23、I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010. We were in the fallout of the recession (经济衰退). She said a polite “no”.
That didn’t stop me. I drew the piano keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was moved by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper. One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in shock.
My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts (选拔) were difficult. Some of the questions includes an estimation (评价) of the composer (作曲家) or when it was written. However, I was finally offered a place. At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and bought my first piano.
When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School in London. I feel proud: it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s leading music schools.

24、 It seems we're always being told to get more sleep. Studies suggest spending less time on sleep can lead to obesity(肥胖) and even cancer. You might even find yourself with a head full of false memories. But rarely does science explore the dark side of sleeping too much. That's because few of us in today's busy world have the luck of exploring that option.
In an August 2018 study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers researched the sleep patterns of those“fortunate”few and found they may not be so lucky after all. In fact, they found people who get more than eight hours of sleep have greater health risk compared to those who sleep together less than seven hours. What's more, sleep-aholics-those who manage to get 10 hours a night-stand a 30 percent higher chance of dying compared to the seven-hour crowd.
The wide-ranging global study involved(涉及) more than three million people who self-reported on their sleep habits and came to an eye-opening conclusion: If you tend to sleep a lot, you may want to buy an alarm clock. As with all things in life, sleep is best taken in moderation(适度).
You may be thinking: What if I only sleep in on Saturday and Sunday, am I still at risk? The answer is yes, according to a 2019 study published in Current Biology. Researchers discovered that even if a person sleeps more than seven hours on the weekends but still sleeps less than that on weeknights, they are at risk of gaining weight and developing sensitivity to insulin, which controls the level of sugar in blood.
For the study, 36 participants were divided into three groups that each had a different sleep schedule: nine hours every night, five hours every night, and five hours from Monday to Friday and sleeping much on weekends. People who get too much sleep tend to feel tired and lack energy. Also, both sleep-deprived(睡眠不足的) groups consume more food and gain weight.
【1】Why is the harmful effect of sleeping too much seldom studied?
A.Few people have time to sleep too much. B.Lack of sleep causes much more harm.
C.It turns out to be a healthy sleep pattern. D.People's health has nothing to do with it.
【2】What does the underlined words "those 'fortunate' few" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Those leading a relaxing life. B.Those getting too much sleep.
C.Those with less time to sleep. D.Those with no sleep problems.
【3】What can be learned from the 2019 study?
A.Sleeping much is particularly beneficial to hungry people.
B.Many people sleep more on weekends than on weekdays.
C.An alarm clock of high quality is important for good sleep.
D.People who sleep much only on weekends also have health risk.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A.It is necessary to save enough time for sleep.
B.Too much sleep can result in gaining weight.
C.Sleeping too much does harm to people's health.
D.People can avoid sleeping much by eating healthily.
25、Scientists say that the brains of animals and humans risk severe damage without blood ow and oxygen. But, researchers say they were able to ________ some activity in the brains of pigs that had been killed four hours earlier. Nenad Sestan, one of the Yale School of Medicine researchers, said that by medical ________, the brains were not living brains. He added that the brains could not think or sense anything.
The researchers, however, found that cells within brains that have lost their supply of blood and oxygen could ________ longer than scientists had believed. The research might ________ new medical treatments for stroke and other conditions. It also provides a new way to study the brain and how drugs work in it. The 32 brains in the study came from pigs that had been killed for food. The scientists put the brains into a device in their lab. Four hours after the animal died, they began pumping a specially designed blood ________ through the organs. After six hours, scientists found that individual brain cells in one area of the brain had ________ to keep important details of their structure. And when they sent electric signals to the brains, the cells ________ in a way that showed viability (可生存性).
The scientists studied the artificial blood before and after it entered the treated brains. They found the brain cells were ________ blood sugar and oxygen and producing carbon dioxide: a(n) ________ hat they were working. They also found that blood pathway in treated brains reacted to a drug that makes them wider. But the brains did not show large amounts of activity that would be a sign of consciousness. The scientists said restoring consciousness was not the ________ of the study, and that they did not know whether it was possible. The scientists said that they had no ________ to try their methods on human brains at this time. ________, they arc now looking to keep the study for longer than six hours of treatment.
Chris-tof Koch, president of the Allen Institute for Brain Science, who did not take part in the study, said he was surprised by the results, ________ since they came from such a large animal. He said the study could increase our knowledge to bring people back to the land of living after a drug overdose. He suggested it also could ________ treatments for a patient when the brain has not received enough oxygen for an hour or two. Koch said the results of the study also raised question about the widely used definition of death - the ________ loss of brain activity.
