It was dark outside one day. I got on a bus quietly. Suddenly, a passenger cried in a loud voice, "Someone has stolen my money!" I felt nervous, because his money was in my hand. Some people suggested the driver drive the bus to the police station, but some were against it because they were in a hurry to go back home. The whole bus was very noisy. 26、Nowadays, people always make resolutions to give up sugar, but they always end up with failure. Why is sugar so powerful, and how can you beat it?

Many sugar cravings(渴求) come from a blood sugar imbalance(失衡). When your body takes in sugar, your blood sugar quickly goes up and your body let insulin(胰岛素) out to lower it to a safer level. But if the insulin brings your blood sugar level too low, your body will want more food to raise it and increase your energy. You are on a blood sugar roller coaster that is hard to get off.

Some sugar cravings are from your brain as a result of lifestyle. Always being stressed is like begging for trouble. For example, if you are too stressed, you will be thirsty for sugar to cheer yourself up. Besides, poor sleep can also lead to overeating sugar, because you need energy to free yourself from tiredness.

Sometimes we experience cravings that are nothing but a habit. Perhaps you watched your parents overeat sugar throughout your childhood. Now you do the same, eating pie, for example, even you are not hungry at all. Or you may have spent years eating sweet food like chocolate or ice cream to reduce sadness.

The key to dealing with sugar cravings is to eat foods that stop too much insulin from being released(释放). Healthy fats and protein(蛋白质) are good choices. Eating plenty of healthy fats such as nuts and olive oil, can help your body get its energy elsewhere. Protein helps you feel satisfied, which can cut down hunger. When you feel energized and full, you may not want more food with high sugar. Making a plan to change your life into a healthy one also helps.

You may find it is hard to give up sugar totally. But once you start to deal with it, you may find yourself more energetic and can enjoy a smoother ride on a flat road. So, hopefully, you can beat sugar and have a healthy life.

27、Nowadays there are different ideas about competition. Value it highly, believing that it is good for social development. However, others say that competition is bad and that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death events. In their mind what they really want is going for success, and the development of many other qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost on the way to success, others take an opposite opinion. Many people are strongly against competition. Among them, most are young people who have suffered from such pressure from their parents. They seem to look for failure by not trying to win or achieve success.________, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” They don’t want to admit (承认) that if they have really tried and lost, that would mean more.

Clearly, this belief is the same as that of those who try to prove themselves. Both come from the wrong belief that self-confidence depends on how well one does by comparing with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. If such fear begins to be unimportant, we can have a better knowledge of competition.

【1】Winning is really ________ for the children who like competition in the passage.

A.interesting

B.unfriendly

C.important

D.unexpected

【2】Which of the following should be put in the blank in Paragraph 3?

A.By not trying

B.By not losing

C.By not caring

D.By not thinking

【3】What is the structure of this passage?

A.

B.

C.

D.

【4】How does the writer make these different ideas clear to the readers?

A.By giving explanations.

B.By giving examples.

C.By giving excuses.

D.By giving suggestions.
