二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Disturbed by reports of rising domestic violence under coronavirus lockdown, a Polish high school student launched a fake online shop to offer a lifeline to victims trapped in their homes. Her idea won a European Union prize that came with € 10,000($12,120).

"I heard about a French initiative(计划), where people go to the pharmacy(药房)and ask for a special mask that lets the pharmacist know they are a victim of domestic violence, " Krystyna Paszko explained. "I thought it was so brilliant! " In April, she decided to open her shop " Camomiles and Pansies" to sell those cosmetics. When a victim writes asking to buy a cream, a psychologist responds instead of a salesperson and asks how long the "skin problems" have been going on for. If someone places an order and leaves an address, it is actually a code asking for authorities to visit their home.

After Krystyna openly wrote about her plan on her own Facebook page, she was flooded with questions. "I thought it would only be for my friends, but the shares on Facebook were big and it became a hit, " she said. With so much interest, she contacted the Women's Rights Centre, a Polish NGO(Non-Governmental Organization), asking for assistance. In response it provided psychologists and lawyers to work with the website. Since its launch, more than 350 people have contacted the website. Most of the victims are young, under 40, and about 10% are male. The president of the Women's Rights Centre, Urszula Nowakowska, said she was "very impressed" by Krystyna's project. "There are around 70,000 domestic violence cases annually in Poland, of which 56,000 are treated as family conflicts rather than crimes. "

Krystyna credits her interest in human rights to her role in the scouts(童子军)— she leads a Warsaw scout group and created its Facebook page. After she won the prize, she claimed to put the money to good use and was pleased that a spotlight was being shone on the problem of home abuse.

【1】What might have inspired Krystyna with the idea?

A.The advice from a professional psychologist.

B.The urge to win the European Union prize.

A.By purchasing a specially-made cream.

B.By going to her shop for skin problems.

C.By visiting her online shop to place orders.

D.By requesting support from psychologists.

【3】What can we know about the website from paragraph 3?

A.Young female victims have benefited most from it.

B.Krystyna shared her success stories on the website.

C.It classifies domestic violence as family conflicts.

D.A Polish NGO offered financial assistance to it.

【4】Which of the following words best describe Krystyna?

A.Caring and easy-going.

22、   What’s the effect of poetry on our brain? Scientists have been investigating the neuronal (神经元的) connections and brain circuits that can work in the reading of poetry for some time. And, even though the research has only just begun, the results are already fascinating.

Poetry has the oldest recorded texts in literature. Although it’s impossible to say exactly when it began to be used in the oral tradition, we dare to say that it’s accompanied humanity forever. This gives us an idea of the impact that poetic language can have on our emotional and cognitive state. The emotional response to literature in general shares areas of activation with music. However, more areas of the right hemisphere (半球) seem to be related to poetry. The researchers measured the goosebumps resulting from the tingling (强烈感受) sensation in reading poetry. This type of sensation has also been proven to result from music. However, the tingling sensations produced by poetry activate different areas of the brain compared to those activated by music.

Dr. Eugen Wassiliwizky’s team collected data on behavioral responses in people reading or listening to poetry. They proved that poetry is capable of causing emotional responses and rich emotional experiences. In addition, a poem expresses the poet’s ideas. From a psychological view, poetry is a game of language that manages to group words in a surprising way. We could compare this with how a chef combines ingredients that seem impossible to combine, producing extraordinary results. Poetry is based on rules of construction. It sets up a rhythm, which then breaks, before finally returning to it. The play on the meanings of words, sometimes several meanings in just one word, is extremely intellectually inspiring. We can read a poem a thousand times, and still find its new meanings.

Generally, our passage through the wonderful world of poetry is cut short by a rather reduced exposure during childhood and the overly analytical approach of this literary genre (类型),which is given in most schools. Although, the studies that experts have conducted on poetry get a lot of interesting results, poetry still holds a mystery that science hasn’t yet been able to investigate. For example, why a perfect cadence (抑扬顿挫) and rhythm can lift the spirit of people is the new challenge for the research.

1What is the main difference between poetry and music?

A.Music causes fewer goosebumps.

B.Poetry creates more tingling sensations.

C.They work on different parts of the brain.

D.They are processed in different parts of the brain.

2What does the author probably think of poetry?

A.It is vague in its meaning but rich in emotional experience.

B.It combines ingredients and extraordinary results.

C.It expresses something about the poet.

D.It’s a pure game of language that surprises to give readers.

3What might be the problem when we learn poetry at school?

A.We analyze this literary genre too much.

B.We make children more exposed to it.

C.We haven’t read a poem a thousand times.

D.We rely too much on our teachers.

4What is this text mainly about?

A.Findings about poetry. B.The history of poetry.

C.How to write poetry. D.How to appreciate poetry.

23、After walking for nearly 10 kilometers by China’s Huangshan Mountain, and just as he was on the edge of giving up, Phil Lecomte caught sight of a beautiful village.

This moment took place 14 years ago, when the Frenchman traveled to a small town at the foot of the mountain with his camera and backpack. In 1999, Lecomte traveled to China for the first time. He says that the vast lands and beautiful scenery of China, including mountains, rivers, ancient villages and terraced fields (梯田), are things he never forgets. In 2009,he traveled to Huangshan Mountain in Anhui province, a place that changed his life.

“I didn’t want to leave here anymore. I wanted to change my life and be a dreamer like I was when I was a child,” Lecomte said. His trip to China turned into a long-term stay. In 2012, Lecomte became a tour guide. Unlike other guides, he rarely takes his guests to the most popular attractions. Instead, he searches for unknown scenery in the surrounding area.

Lecomte often hikes or rides a motorcycle with his friends to find hidden scenery scattered around Huangshan Mountain. He enjoys time spent camping and hiking with his Chinese and foreign friends. They sing and play the ukulele by clear streams, chat with locals herding cattle or picking tea, and fall asleep to the sounds of frogs.

Lecomte has taken more than 118,000 photos in China to date. He still has a photo of his childhood home. A house with a red roof is reflected in the clear lake, surrounded by forests, like a picturesque oil painting. “When I was a child, I loved camping in this forest with my friends. When I would wake up at night in my sleeping bag, I could see the stars when I looked up. Now, when I camp on Huangshan, I can also see the stars that can’t be seen in the cities,” he said.

24、Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth

Introduction

Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin America and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K. I. and our partner organizations have learned.

Background

Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime.

Street Business Partnerships

S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income.

● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages.

● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit.

Lessons Learned

The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.

● It’s important for all loans to be linked to training programs that include the development of basic business and life skills.

● Small loans are provided initially for purchasing fixed assets such as bicycles, shoe shining kits.

● All S.K.I. programs have charged interest on the loans, primarily to get the business runners used to the concept of paying interest on borrowing money. Generally the rates have been modest.

Conclusion

There is a need to recognize the importance of access to credit for poor young people seeking to fulfill economic needs.
