二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、The British custom of driving on the left side of the road isn’t a sign of eccentricity—there’s actually a very sensible reason for it.

Originally, almost everybody travelled on the left side of the road. For Medieval swordsmen on horseback, it made sense to keep to the left to have their right arms closer to their opponents. Mounting and dismounting horses were also easier from the left side, and safer done by the side of the road than in the center.

So perhaps the question here should be, why did people stop travelling on the left?

Things changed in the late 1700s when large carriages pulled by several pairs of horses were used to transport farm products in France and the United States. In the absence of a driver’s seat inside the carriage, the driver sat on the rear left horse, with his right arm free to use his whip to keep the horses moving. Since he was sitting on the left, he wanted other vehicles to pass on his left, so he kept to the right side of the road.

The British Government refused to give up their left-hand driving ways. Meanwhile post-revolution France, under their left-handed ruler Napoleon, stuck to a permanent move to the right side of the road. As the British and the French were yielding their power across the globe, they insisted that the countries they occupied drive like them. This explains why former British colonies such as Australia, New Zealand and India drive on the left, while former French colonies like Algeria drive on the right.

When Henry Ford made his Model T in 1908, the driver’s seat was on the left, meaning that for Americans, cars would have to drive on the right side of the road to allow front and back passengers to exit the car onto the sideway. This influenced a change in many countries, such as Canada, Italy and Spain. However, British drivers remain on the left, and this is highly unlikely to change.

1It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that in Middle Ages ________.

A. people always got on horses from the left side

B. people all walked and rode on the left of the road

C. people never got off horses in the center of the road

D. swordsmen felt safer travelling on the left of the road

2Why did people start travelling on the right?

A. They used large carriages to transport farm products.

B. They had to hold their whips with their right hands.

C. They wanted other carriages to pass on their left.

D. They were forced to sit on the back left horse.

3According to the passage, which of the following keep to the left side of the road?

A. Russia.   B. India.

C. Spain.   D. Algeria.

4Why does the author mention Model T in the last paragraph?

A. To introduce a world-famous make of American cars.

B. To stress its role in changing the custom of driving.

C. To describe its safest design for passengers.

D. To explain why the British won’t change.

22、Each year, backed up by a growing anti-consumerist movement, people are using the holiday season to call on us all to shop less.

Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasingly turned their sight on our “consumer culture”, with Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day growing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.

We clearly have a growing resource problem. The products we make, buy and use are often linked to the destruction of our waterways, biodiversity, climate and the land on which millions of people live, but to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is a systematic problem.

While we complain about environmental destruction over Christmas, environmentalists often forget what the holiday season actually means for many people. In fact, for most, rather than an add-on to an already heavy shopping year, Christmas is likely the only time of year they have the opportunity to spend on friends and family, or even just to buy the necessities needed for modern life.

This is particularly true for Boxing Day, often laughed at by anti-consumerists the most. While we may look down on the queues in front of the shops, for many, those sales provide the chance to buy things they've needed all year. As journalist Leigh Phillips argues, “This is one of the few times of the year that people can even hope to afford such ‘luxuries’, the Christmas presents their kids are asking for, or just an appliance that works.”

Indeed, the richest 7% of people are responsible for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account of our consumption “problem” anyway. Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring people like Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own £ 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system?

Anyway, anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working class about their life choice, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problem. It is no wonder no one is changing their behaviour—or that environmental destruction continues without becoming any less severe.

【1】What can be inferred about the environmentalist movement from Paragraphs 2 and 3?

A.It has targeted the wrong persons.

B.It has achieved its intended purposes.

C.It has solved the environmental problems.

D.It has persuaded consumers not to shop any more.

【2】What does Leigh Phillips think of Boxing Day?

A.A trap for consumers.

B.A tough problem to deal with.

C.A precious shopping opportunity.

D.A positive contribution to the economy.

【3】For what purpose is Roman Abramovich mentioned in the text?

A.To show how rich he is.

B.To announce he is a Russian.

C.To present his contributions to the environment.

D.To suggest the real cause of environmental problems hasn't been found.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

A.The environmental problems are very serious.

B.Less shopping can't solve the environmental problems.

C.Resources are becoming fewer and fewer on the earth.

D.Measures should be taken to protect the environment.

23、   I’d done it before, and so I had no reason to believe that this time would be any different. I was sure that when I returned home from my mission trip. As always, I’d bring back nothing more some mud on my boots. A hole or two in my jeans and, of course, a lot of great memories.

The summer before my high school graduation, I went to West Virginia with others as volunteers to repair the homes of those in need. Arriving at our destination, my group was assigned the task of rebuilding sections of a home that had been damaged by fire. No sooner had we parked on the home’s dirt driveway than we saw an excited little girl, no more than six years old, standing in the doorway of the family’s temporary home. Shoeless and wearing dirty clothes and the biggest smile I’d ever seen, she yelled, “Ma, Ma, they really came!” I didn’t know it then, but her name was Dakota, and four more days would pass before she’d say another word near me.

Behind Dakota was a woman in a wheelchair — her grandmother, we’d soon learn. I also discovered that my job that week would be to help change a fire-damaged dining room into a bedroom for this little girl. Grabbing our tools, we went to work. Over the following days, I noticed Dakota peeking at us every now and then as we worked. A few times, I tried talking with her, but she remained shy and distant, always flying around us like a tiny butterfly but keeping to herself.

By our fifth and final day, however, this was about to change.

Before I went to work on her home on that last morning, I spoke for a moment or two with the grandmother. I was especially pleased when she told me how much Dakota loved her new room — so much, in fact, that she’d begged to sleep in it the previous night, even though it wasn’t quite ready. As we talked, I noticed something I hadn’t seen before — Dakota was hiding behind her grandmother.

Cautiously, she stepped into view, and I could see that just like her clothes, her face was still dirty. But no amount of soil could hide those bright blue eyes and big smile. She was simply adorable. I wanted so much to hug her, but respecting her shyness, I kept my distance.

Slowly, she began walking toward me. It wasn’t until she was just inches away that I noticed the folded piece of paper in her tiny hand. Silently, she reached up and handed it to me. Once unfolded, I looked at the drawing she’d made with her broken crayons on the back of an old coloring book cover. It was of two girls — one much taller than the other — and they were holding hands. She told me it was supposed to be me and her, and on the bottom of the paper were three little words that instantly broke my heart. Now almost in tears, I couldn’t control myself anymore — I bent down and hugged her. She hugged me, too. And for the longest time, neither of us could let go.

By early afternoon, we finished Dakota’s bedroom, and so I gladly used the rare free time to get to know my newest friend. Sitting under a tree away from the others, we shared a few apples while she told me about her life. As I listened to her stories about the struggles she and her family went through daily, I began to realize how boring various aspects of my own life were.

I left for home early the next morning. I was returning with muddy boots and holes in my Jeans. But because of Dakota, I brought back something else, tooa greater appreciation for all or the blessings of my life. I’ll never forget that barefoot little butterfly with the big smile and dirty face. I pray that she’ll never forget me either.

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My wife, Kay, looked quite worried as I said goodbye at 6:30 a.m. that Sunday morning in December 1963. Two hours later, I was standing on the cliff at Aldinga Beach, 55 kilometres south of our home in Adelaide, South Australia.

Forty of us—each with black rubber suits and flipper (蛙鞋), glass-windowed face masks, snorkels (呼吸管), lead-weighted belts and spearfishing guns—were waiting for the judge’s 9:00 a.m. whistle to announce that the annual South Australian Spearfishing Championship competition began. We all had five hours to bring the judge a bag of fish. The winner would be determined both by the total weight and by the number of different species.

I was confident because I’d taken the 1961-1962 competition and was returning as the reigning champion.

At the whistle blast we waded (跋涉) into the surf. Each man dragged a float (鱼漂) behind him, attached to his lead-weighted belt. We would attach our fish to these floats immediately on spearing them, hoping their blood wouldn’t attract the always hungry and curious predatory sharks that swim the deeper water off the South Australian coast. Still, as a precaution (预防措施), a patrol (巡逻) boat crossed our hunting area, keeping a lookout.

By 12:30, when I dragged a heavy catch of parrot-fish, snapper, boarfish and magpie perch to the beach, I could see from the other piles that I must be well up in the competition.

Suddenly, something huge hit me with huge force on my left side, pushing me forward with wild speed. I became immediately nervous. The pressure on my body seemed to choke me. I tried to shake myself but found that I was trapped as if in a vise. When my mind came into focus, I realized my predicament (困境): a shark had me in its jaws.

Although shocked with the horror, I still felt no pain. As I pulled my arm loose from the shark’s teeth, I felt pain I could have never imagined. But I had succeeded in freeing myself.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
