二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   It was rush hour in the morning. Heather Sant, 36, was driving her white 2012 Mazda on the road with her nine-year-old daughter and ten-year-old son in the back. Suddenly, a red pickup truck cut them off. Sant turned the wheel hard to the right, sending the Mazda slide off the road and down an embankment(路堤) that ended in a drop-off after about 50 feet. If the car didn’t stop, it would take off and dive into the road some 20 feet below. Then a bit of luck: as the car raced toward the edge, its undercarriage got stuck, stopping it suddenly.

The people inside, however, were far from safe. The car had come to rest on top of a retaining wall(护墙), balancing on the edge of disaster. One sudden move by anyone inside could throw the car off balance and send it over. Jacob Rodriguez watched everything in terror from the nearby truck company where he works. As an experienced sailor, just like every time he met shipwreck, he whispered a sailing saying “Ship, shipmates, self”, then immediately he and four other men ran to the car. They leaped onto the trunk(后备箱) to balance the weight as the terrified kids in the back seat watched.

Meanwhile, Julio and his nephew Marco, were driving to their jobs at nearby Premier Automotive. Julio jumped out of the car to help while Marco went to the shop, grabbed a strong rope, and returned to the car. He tied the Mazda to an F-350 truck that had been driven over by one of the other rescuers. With the car secured, the group carefully opened the back doors and helped the children out. But their departure shifted the cars weight, causing it to tip forward. The men, still on the trunk, begged Sant to jump into the back seat. She did and then inched out of the back door. Finally, the men carefully got off the trunk. Everyone was safe.

“Another foot,” Rodriguez told USA Today, “and this would be a different story. ”

1What most probably caused the traffic accident?

A.The Mazda was overloaded. B.Sant was really speeding.

2Why did the men ask Sant to move to the back seat?

A.To open the back door of the car. B.To fasten the rope to the truck.

C.To keep the balance of the car. D.To help the men get off the trunk.

3What does Rodriguez want to stress in the last paragraph?

A.The timely help offered by rescuers.

B.The excellent cooperation of all the people.

C.The dangerous position where the car stopped.

D.The serious danger the rescuers faced.

4Which of the following statements is consistent with the theme of the passage?

22、One morning I noticed a woman sitting alone at the bus stop. She seemed not to go to work hurriedly. She wasn't going anywhere as well. Was she waiting for the bus? Did mall(商场)buses come this early when the stores wouldn't be open for hours? I felt puzzled. As I drove by, I heard a voice say, "Give her a bottle of water."

"She looks like she is sleeping. Why would I wake her? What is wrong with me? What is so hard about doing the right thing? It's just a bottle of water!"

So I drove by her again and again. Finally, I pulled my car into a parking zone, stepping out with a bottle of water in one hand and a twenty-dollar bill in the other. Each step seemed to fill me with purpose and focus. No words can describe what happened between us at that moment. I thought I was bringing her a cold drink, but instead I was bringing her a hope she needed. We sat together for a while as she talked. She had a sad story to tell, but she was no longer sad. Before we parted, I grabbed all the cash I had in my purse and found more water in my car along with some snacks. We stood at the bus stop hugging and said our goodbyes.

I still have a thousand questions as to why I struggled to act. Why did it take me many circles around the mall and an argument with myself? I was once torn between helping her and ignoring her. All I know for sure is that while walking toward that woman at the bus stop, a miracle happened.

There are opportunities for us to love every day. Maybe our doubts keep us from acting. Maybe we don't want to take the risk or be uncomfortable. That day, I learned how love answers when asked and how love both gives and receives.

23、   For people, many other animals, family matters. Consider how many jobs go to relatives. Or how an ant will cruelly attack intruder (入侵的) ants but rescue injured, closely related nest-mates. There are good evolutionary reasons to aid relatives, after all. Now, it seems, family feelings may stir in plants as well.

A Canadian biologist planted the seed of the idea more than a decade ago, but many plant biologists regarded it as heretical-plants lack the nervous systems that enable animals to recognize kin (家族), so how can they know their relatives? But with a series of recent findings, the belief that plants really do care for their most genetically close peers-in a quiet, planty way-is taking root. Some species control how far their roots spread, others change how many flowers they produce, and a few tilt (倾斜) or shift their leaves to minimize shading of neighboring plants, favoring related individuals.

“We need to recognize that plants not only sense whether it’s light or dark or if they’ve been touched, but also whom they are interacting with,” says Susan Dudley, a plant evolutionary ecologist, whose early plant kin recognition studies sparked the interest of many scientists.

Beyond broadening views of plant behavior, the new work may have a practical side. In September 2018, a team in China reported that rice planted with kin grows better, a finding that suggested family ties can be used to improve crop yields. “It seems anytime anyone looks for it, they find a kin effect,” says Andre Kessler, a chemical ecologist at Cornell University.

D.They move their leaves to share sunlight with their close peers.

4What can be inferred from the text?

D.The closer rice is planted with their relatives the more they will produce.

24、I have got kinds of gifts in my big closet. I am a closet regifter(赠礼). Don’t judge me. Regifting is a longstanding southern tradition. I mean, don’t waste what you don’t want, right? Most of you probably have a shelf or a drawer at home that houses some things that are nice but just aren’t for you. So, rather than discard them, you should save them for a rainy day when you realize you need just the right thing for that person you totally forgot about.

My mom keeps a closet filled with goodies to give. And my grandmother? One year she gave my mom a really interesting sweater on Christmas Day. After dinner we pulled the videos and we watched everyone open the gifts from the year before. What did we see? My grand mother received the exactly same sweater that she had just given my mom! So see? There was no way I was going to be able to avoid the tradition.

You would think I would learn my lesson since I have had a regift or two backfire on me. Once, I sent my cousin a wedding present from my store, a clock that was given to me on my birthday by my crazy aunt Nadine. It was unique. I truly thought she would love it. Weeks later I received a thank-you note for my thoughtful gift:

Dear Erica,

Thank you so much for the wonderful clock. I was a little confused when I opened it up and there was a card inside that said, “Happy Birthday Erica. Love, Aunt Nadine”.

Awkward! But even after all that, my annoyance remains. I mean, I promise I’ll quit someday. But first, I just have to get rid of the useless gifts in my closet. Any takers?
