21、 Text messaging is a surprisingly good way to receive candid responses to sensitive questions, according to a new study to be presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Association for Public Opinion Research. “The preliminary (初步的) results of our study suggest that people are more likely to disclose sensitive information via text messages than in voice interviews,” says Fred Conrad, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
“This is sort of surprising,” says Conrad, “since many people thought that texting would decrease the likelihood of disclosing sensitive information because it creates a persistent, visual record of questions and answers that others might see on your phone and in the cloud.”
With text, the researchers also found that people were less likely to engage in “satisficing”— a survey industry term referring to the common practice of giving good enough, easy answers. “We believe people give more precise answers via texting because there's just not the time pressure in a largely asynchronous (非同步的) mode like text that there is in phone interviews, ” says Conrad. “As a result, respondents are able to take longer to arrive at more accurate answers.”
Conrad conducted the study with Michael Schober, a professor of psychology at the New School for Social Research. “We're in the early stages of analyzing our findings,” says Schober. “But so far it seems that texting may reduce some respondents' tendency to shade the truth or to present themselves in the best possible light in an interview, even when they know it's a human interviewer they are communicating with via text. What we cannot yet be sure of is who is most likely to be disclosive in text. Is it different for frequent texters, or generational, for example? ”
For the study, the researchers recruited approximately 600 iPhone-users through Google Ads, offering them iTunes Store rewards to participate in the study. Their goals were to see whether responses to the same questions differed depending on several variables: whether the questions were asked via text or voice, whether a human or a computer asked the questions, and whether the environment, including the presence of other people and the likelihood of multitasking, affected the answers.

22、 Just because a scientist puts a GPS tracking collar on a wild polar bear does not mean the animal will willingly keep it on. They can remove it, if one becomes annoying. But scientists have now found a way of using signals from those dropped collars to track the ice itself.
The scientists identified 20 collars that transmitted movement data consistent with ice drift (漂流) rather than polar bear motion between 2005 and 2015. The resulting records of how melting ice drifts in Hudson Bay are unique; there are no easily accessible on-the-ground sensors, and satellite observations often cannot accurately capture the motion of small ice sheets.
The team compared the removed collars’ movements to widely used ice-drift modeling data from the U. S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Collar data indicated that the NSIDC model underestimates the speed at which ice moves around in Hudson Bay — as well as the overall extent of drift. Over the course of several months the model could diverge (偏离) from an ice sheet’s location by a few hundred kilometers, the scientists say.
This means the bears may be working harder, when moving against the direction of the ice, than scientists had assumed, “Since we’re underestimating the speed of drift, we’re likely underestimating the energetic effort of polar bears,” says Ron Togunov, who led the study.
The study reveals timely insight into how highly mobile ice moves. As melting increases in coming years, such ice will likely become more common farther north, in the central Arctic, says Andy Mahoney, a geophysicist at the University of Alaska, who was not involved in the study. Scientists had known NSIDC data could underestimate drift speeds, Mahoney says, but “any time we can find a data gap and plug it is a good thing.”
Plus, such data could improve predictions about how oil spills or other pollutants may spread in seas littered with drifting ice, says Walt Meier, a senior NSIDC research scientist. The findings may even influence future NSIDC models. “It'’s a really nice data set.” Meier says. “And certainly one we’ll take under consideration.”
【1】What can a GPS tracking collar do?
A.Measure the depth of ice sheet.
B.Capture the movement of ice.
C.Describe the melting speed of ice.
D.Record the emotional state of bears.
【2】What can we learn about the collar data?
A.It shows the ice moves more slowly from its original location.
B.It may reveal polar bears are not so energetic as before.
C.It indicates the ice is more likely to move south in the central Arctic.
D.It can help predict the location of some pollutants in seas.
【3】Which would be the best title for this passage?
A.Data Tells a Different Story
B.Wild Polar Bears’ Signaling
C.Insights into a Puzzling Aspect
D.Ice Is Taken under Consideration
23、 A team of scientists says that playing sounds underwater can get fish to return to areas with severely damaged coral reefs(珊瑚礁).In an experiment, they found fish returned after hearing recordings of the sounds like a healthy ocean reef. The research results were reported in Nature Communications.
The scientists placed underwater speakers in areas where coral had been dying in Australia’s northern Great Barrier Reef. They played the sounds over a period of about six weeks in 2017 and studied the results. The team reported that twice as many fish arrived in the areas where the sounds of healthy coral were played. The sounds also led to a 50 percent increase in the number of species present in the area, the researchers found. The researchers noted the importance of having many different kinds of fish return to the area. Different species of fish perform many activities that support the ocean environment and sea life.
Steve Simpson is a professor at the University of Exeter who helped lead the research. He explained, “Healthy coral reefs are remarkably noisy places. They contain the sounds of many kinds of shrimp, fish and other sea creatures. Young fish listen to these sounds when they are looking for a place to settle. Reefs become extremely quiet when they suffer destruction that is usually related to human-caused pollution. Coral damage can drive shrimp and fish away. But the experiment suggested that the use of underwater loudspeakers was an effective way to get young fish to come back.”
Mark Meekan is a fish biologist. He said that the return of the fish is the first step towards seeing major improvements in reef health. “Recovery is underpinned (巩固) by fish that clean the reef and create space for corals to regrow,” he said. University of Bristol professor, Andy Radford, said the underwater sounds are a promising way to fight coral reef damage at the local community level. But he noted that other threats need to be reduced as well. These include climate change, pollution and over fishing.
【1】Why can underwater speakers make fish return?
A.Because the fish prefer music around their habitats.
B.Because they play sounds as a healthy reef does.
C.Because the fish know the places with them become better.
D.Because they can drive the natural enemies of fishes away.
【2】What effect do different kinds of fish have on the ocean according to the text?
A.Keeping the ocean’s ecological balance. B.Removing the remarkable noises.
C.Preventing the pollution caused by human. D.Driving dangerous creatures away.

24、Two tickets. Only two tickets to the big quarter-finals basketball game. Three pairs of eyes all focused on the tickets in Dad’s, outstretched hand. Marcus, the oldest, spoke out the question running through everyone’s mind: “Only two tickets? But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you?”
“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go?” repeated Caleb, the youngest.
“Dad, can’t you get any more tickets?” I asked. I might be the in-between sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers were for a night out with Dad. “I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing among the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most. Let me sleep on it.”
The next morning, Dad and Mom went to the library. And he said we should all get started on our Saturday chores as soon as we finished breakfast.
“Chores!” Marcus said, “How can we concentrate on chores when the big game is eleven hours away?” Then he and Caleb went downstairs to play basketball.
I looked at the breakfast table in front of me. Well, it seemed that Saturday morning chores started right there. I did dishes first. Then I lifted the lid (盖子) on the garbage container and placed the full plastic bag inside.
As began to replace the lid on the garbage container, a white envelope on the inside of the heavy black plastic lid caught my attention it must have stuck to the lid by accident. But then I noticed that he envelope was actually taped to the inside of the lid, and someone had written the word “Congratulations!” on the front of the envelope.

26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Workaholics live for their work, often spending many extra hours at work, and often taking work home to complete. It’s fine to live in a work-hard culture, but when work becomes the only reason for a person’s existence above more important things (such as family and friends), the issue becomes critical. That’s the problem more and more Americans are faced with.
Americans are working more hours per week than in years past, and with many companies reducing employees, more and more workers are worried about their own jobs. Some studies show that as many as 40 percent of American workers don’t even bother to take vacations, partly because of fears they may not have a job to come back to if they do. Besides, it is obvious that part of the matter is financial. More and more people begin to define success in terms of financial measures. The higher one’s income is, the more respect one gets. Finally, people nowadays live and work in a connected environment -- e-mails, instant messaging, fax machines, and cell phones -- making it hard for them to truly get time away from their work, even when they are on holiday.
When work becomes the only reason for being -- when it becomes the only thing people think about, the only thing that truly makes people happy, many Americans find that they are no longer close to their kids. Divorce rate jumps and serious stress-related health problems come up. Undoubtedly, it is time to do something.
To reduce workaholism, you must stay away from work once in a while. There are many ways to do that: Spend time with family and friends; Call home often to stay connected; Learn to say no to new assignments; Consider exercises to get your body back to a healthy shape; Fight the urge that everything you do must be perfect. It will take some effort, but for yourself and those you love, you really should make the effort. Have a try and you won’t regret it.
