二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、I still remember that day. Looking at the sea of people, I wanted to run off the stage. But I dived into the speech I had practiced diligently, nervous but determined to make my voice heard.

It all started with my essay in response to a radio host’s slanderous comments about women’s rights. After my boss refused it for publication, I submitted it to others, until finally I received a “YES!” from an online blog focused on women.

My story had thousands of views online. One of them invited me to speak at a grass-root gathering planned in Washington D.C., I agreed hastily. Then reality sunk in. I was an unemployed writer, needed to find gainful employment, not focus on a meeting hundreds of miles away. I fought with myself, ready to reply with the reasons why I could not attend their gathering.

Still unsure of what to do, I called my kindergarten teacher. As always, her advice was what I needed. I was going to do this trip without spending a cent. I began contacting everyone I knew on the path from my house to Washington D.C., explaining that I needed a ride. I set up a website for my “Road Trip for Rights.” Small donations for my trip started rolling in.

Armed only with my computer, phone and a backpack of essentials, I began my adventure. On my way, a woman who had been watching on the website pulled up. She and her daughter were heading to the gathering and went a long way round to pick me. After arrival, she dropped me off at my hotel, and I finally relaxed before the big day.

Upon returning to my hotel after the most amazing day, I received an envelope with my name on it. Inside were a train ticket and a note that read, “Thank you for being a voice for those of us who cannot speak.” I boarded the train, grateful and exhausted.

Since then, I have been to many gatherings and marches. I will always be thankful for that radio host whose words fueled a passion in me to find my voice.

B.To seek help for her trip to Washington D. C.

C.To organize some well-purposed gatherings.

D.To awaken people s awareness of their rights.

【4】What can we infer about the radio host?

A.His improper words set off the author’s passion.

B.He helped set up the gathering in Washington D. C.

C.He published an article concerning women’s rights.

D.He was known for his sharp and inadequate words.

22、   When I tell people I wrote a book with my dad, they usually say, “It must be nice to think of the legacy (遗产) you created with someone who means 90 much to you.”

This was a beautiful idea, but it was not the way I, or my dad, ever thought about the cooperation. Though we created something we are proud of, “nice” is not the word either of us uses to describe the process.

“It was more confrontation (对抗) than cooperation,” my dad likes to say. I agree.

When we landed a book deal, we began a wring journey that was more difficult than either of us had expected, but also far more rewarding.

For almost three years, we met once or twice a week at my parents’ house and talked daily about the plan and the outline of each chapter. After the meeting, one of would write a rough draft that the other would build on. I wanted the book to focus on positive vices(不良习惯): such as moderate (适度的) chocolate. However, my dad felt the book should include chapters dealing with things like walking and sending tine with family Finally, I saw it his way. He said the book was about more than just good advices. It was about encouraging people to enjoy life in healthy ways.

Writing this book was a reminder that our family members share not only our faults but also our strengths. My dad is smart, funny, critical and caring. He has a strong passion for the truth. I hope I share these great qualities. For this book, he researched each topic with an enthusiasm 1 had never seen from him, and he insisted that we constantly question and critically analyze every piece of information-even our own conclusions. He was determined to cooperate on a booknot because he could not write one on his own, but because he believed that we could create something better together than we could alone.

I am not sure if our cooperation led to better writing, but it led to a better writing experience. Writing this book was difficult, sometimes more difficult than past projects, but it was never lonely.

1What does the author think of the writing experience with his father?

A.I was proud and positive. B.It was hard but rewarding

C.It was interesting but hard. D.It was funny and encouraging

2Which of the following best describes the author’s father?

A.Humorous. B.Ambitious.

C.Enthusiastic. D.Demanding

3What does the underlined word “deal” in paragraph 4 refer to?

A.Passion. B.Permission.

C.Investment. D.Agreement.

4According to the text, what could be the purpose of wring this book together?

A.To show that my father is smart, critical and caring.

B.To show that writing a book is not an easy job.

C.To show that cooperation is of great significance.

D.To show that family members can share nice things.

23、   The dream of the flying car could come down to earth soon as several start-ups like Chinese EHANG and Uber are developing so-called “passenger drones(无人机)”—self-flying drones big enough to ferry individual commuters around town—which could shrink commute(上下班往返) times from hours to minutes.

At first glance, human-carrying drones sound no more realistic than flying cars. Until recently inventors had never been able to marry automobiles and aircraft in a practical way. Yet a few companies have kept at it: Woburn, for example, has since 2006 been developing Transition, a “roadable aircraft” that resembles a small airplane that can fold its wings and drive on roads. A personal flying car in every garage has proved to be a tough sell, however, as there are serious safety concerns about asking the average commuter to train for a pilot’s license and take to the skies.

Passenger drones, by contrast, would operate autonomously and leave the “roadable” part behind in favor of larger versions of aircraft that already exist. Passenger drone designs favor “distributed electric propulsion(推进),” meaning instead of one large rotor powered by a large engine they have multiple propellers each powered by its own, smaller motor. This sacrifices lifting power and flight performance in exchange for mechanical simplicity and lighter weight—factors that could make them cheaper to operate. Quieter electric power would make the noise tolerable to city residents, although it remains to be seen how much weight such a vehicle could lift, and for how long.

With any of these vehicles, safety is the biggest concern and extends to both the aircraft and the automated systems flying them. Advanced artificial intelligence is needed to fly large numbers of autonomous aircraft without crashing them into one another or, say, the local news channel’s traffic helicopter. Carrying people from points A to B seems simple enough, but even the best AI struggles with surprises: What, for example, would a drone do if a landing area suddenly became unavailable? asks Sanjiv Singh, a Carnegie Mellon University robotics researcher. Instead of leaping to fully automated passenger drones, he suggests first testing the necessary AI in unmanned cargo(货物)runs, and adopting a “mixed mode” approach in early passenger services where pilots are assisted by AI co-pilots.

Technical challenges aside, start-ups promoting the technology will have to find a way to convince the public to give their drones a whirl, something that requires a much bigger leap of faith than getting into the backseat of a self-driving car. Passenger drone makers are “obviously still in the incubation(孵化) stages of technology development and improving the basics,” says Mike Hirschberg, executive director of the American Helicopter Society International. “But 20 or 30 years from now life may be a little like The Jetsons where you take advantage of the third dimension and have much more mobility, especially in urban close quarters where ground transportation is gridlocked.”

The passenger drone progress may follow a sloping takeoff rather than vertical leap. Carnegie Mellon’s Singh sees a long road ahead filled with lots of testing, analysis, regulation and efforts to win the public’s trust before the technology becomes a viable transportation option. “There is the danger of someone moving too fast and then having a problem that sets the industry back for some time,” he says.

1Personal flying cars have failed to gain popularity among households mainly because ______.

A.people don’t have the courage to take the cars to the air.

B.people are unwilling to train for a pilot’s license.

C.people worry that they may not be qualified to fly the cars safely.

D.it is practically impossible to combine cars and aircraft together.

2Which of the following is NOT an advantage of passenger drones?

A.It can lift more weight. B.It is lighter in weight.

C.It makes less noise. D.It is simpler in mechanical design.

3What is Hirschberg’s attitude towards passenger drones?

A.disapproving B.neutral

C.skeptical D.cautiously optimistic

4We can learn from the passage that ______.

A.artificial intelligence can easily tackle the problems occurring in air traffic.

B.human pilots in autonomous aircraft will endanger the safety of passengers.

C.the passenger drone industry will make major breakthroughs in the near future.

D.the public’s distrust may hinder the development of passenger drones.

24、Stories of immigrants attract me a lot, especially the life stories of Italians who have come to America since the 1700s. In each of these stories I see elements of my own story, that of leaving my birthplace and family and creating a new life in a different culture and in a different language.

The child of Italian immigrants and an award-winning scholar of Italian literature, in the book My Two Italies Joseph Luzzi struggled to create or find his own identity from an early age. Even more problematic for him was “which” Italy to “choose,” the one he inherited(继承) from his family, poor and linked to old traditions and customs he finds rude and somewhat cruel, or the one he finds in literature and art books that show him a country with a modern literary culture.

The choice becomes even sadder as in his professional life he becomes a scholar of Italian literature and culture. He describes episodes of his youth that show the clash between the first and the second generation immigrants that are both funny and tragicomic(悲喜剧式的). These episodes highlight the daily customs his parents brought from their hometown that are in conflict with Joseph’s desire to “fit in” the American culture. Joseph’s visits to Italy as a student and then as a scholar deepen the divide between his two Italies and highlight his quest for identity.

The author’s personal changes are full of quotes and comments on the cultural and political landscape of Italy. I find that his insights on contemporary Italian cultural and political phenomena are particularly interesting. In this book, Joseph touches or comments in depth about several issues concerning Italian life, such as the relationship between dialects(方言) and the official “Italian” language, and the Southern “question” or the uneasy interaction between Northern and Southern Italians.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is personal, moving, educational and entertaining. I hope you will enioy it too!

A.Cooperation.

B.Distance.
