二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、Take the wheel of an electric vehicle and prepare to be amazed. The latest technology is there, with tablet-like screens instead of old-fashioned switches. Add falling price which makes owning and running many electric vehicles (short for EV)as cheap as fossil-fuel alternatives, and the open road signals. Above all, the instant acceleration of battery power makes driving easy and exciting.

EV should be recharged roughly every 250 miles. When you do find a public charging point, it is sometimes inaccessible, which causes “range anxiety”. It is one of the main reasons drivers give for not buying an EV. Who might install them? Drivers will need a mix of fast "long distance" chargers installed near motorways and slower “top-up” chargers available in the car parks of shopping centers, restaurants and so on. Dedicated charging firms and carmakers are investing in infrastructure. Oil companies are putting chargers in petrol stations and buying charging companies.

Yet the charging business suffers from big problems. One is how to adjust between the planning authorities and grid firms. Another is the cost. To start with, profits may be difficult to attain because the networks will not at first be heavily used. A related risk is that the coverage will have gaps. And then there is the question of competing networks. Drivers should be able to switch from one to the other without having to sign up to them all.

What to do? Government is experimenting. As well as funding EV sales, many are throwing cash at public chargers. America's law sets aside $7.5 billion to create 500,000 public stations by 2030. Britain plans to require new building to install chargers. Yet the problem of coverage and convenience will remain.

D.The worry of drivers' not finding accessible public charging points.

【3】What results in the problem of the cost?

A.Frequent power failure.

B.The incomplete coverage of network.

C.Drivers' not being capable of signing up for network.

D.A bad relationship between the authority and the grid.

【4】What is the author's attitude towards the government's plan?

A.Recognized.

B.Neutral.

C.Prejudiced.

D.Unconcerned.

22、For many foreigners, finding new friends can case the often overwhelming task of adjusting to a new life abroad. The following countries can definitely feel more welcoming than others.

Uganda

This East African country received the highest marks for friendliness. According to the InterNations report, 57% of foreigners in Uganda gave ‘general friendliness’ the best possible rating (the global average was 26%). Not only that, not a single respondent ranked this factor negatively. Uganda isn’t without its problems, however, including the occasional power failure, and pollution from old cars.

Costa Rica

The Central American country ranks high across all factors when it comes to how easily foreigners fit in. Almost nine out of 10 foreigners (89%) are pleased with the general friendliness of the population, and eight out of 10 (79%) feel at home, according to the survey.

“If you make an effort to understand and eagerly accept the Costa Rican culture, you are very much welcomed with open arms and considered a friend.”

Colombia

This South American hotspot feels like home fast, according to many foreigners.

“The Colombian people are eager to show their country in a positive light and are very receptive and hospitable towards newcomers,” said Anne. Colombia is one of the countries in the world with the lowest percentage of foreign-born residents.

Oman

As one of the sunniest countries in the world, Oman also has friendly residents who reflect the warm climate. A welcoming culture rooted in faith also leads to an openness with newcomers.

23、Newspapers, advertisements, and labels surround us everywhere, turning our environment into a mass of texts to be read or ignored. As the quantity of information we receive continually increases and as information spreading is shifting from page to screen, it may be time to ask how changes in our way of reading may affect our mental life. For how we receive information bears vitally on the ways we experience and interpret reality.

What is most obvious in the evolution of reading is the gradual displacement of the vertical (垂直的) by the horizontal—a shift from intensive to extensive reading. In our culture, access is not a problem, but proliferation (激增) is. And the reading act is necessarily different than it was in its earliest days. Awed by the availability of texts, the reader tends to move across surfaces without allowing the words to resonate (共鸣) inwardly.

Interestingly, this shift from vertical to horizontal parallels the overall societal shift from bounded lifetimes spent in single locales to lives lived in wider geographical areas amid streams of data. This larger access was once regarded as worldliness—one traveled, knew the life of cities, the ways of diverse people…. It has now become the birthright of anyone who owns a television set.

How do we square the advantages and disadvantages of horizontal and vertical awareness? The villagers, who know everything about their surroundings, are blessedly unaware of events in distant lands. The media-obsessed urbanites, by contrast, never lose their awareness of what happens in different parts of the world.

We may ask, which people are happier? The villagers may have found more sense in things owing both to the limited range of their concern and the depth on their information. But restricted conditions and habit also suggest boredom and limitation. The lack of a larger perspective (视角) leads to suspiciousness and cautious conservatism, but for the same reason, the constant availability of data and macro-perspectives has its own decreasing returns. When everything is happening everywhere, it gets harder to care about anything.

How do we assign value? Where do we find the fixed context that allows us to create a narrative of sense about our lives? Ideally, I suppose, one would have the best of both worlds—the purposeful fixity of the local, as well as the availability of enhancing views: a natural ecology of information and context.

【1】What can we learn about the first two paragraphs?

A.Readers today tend to ignore deep engagement with texts.

B.It’s difficult to shift from vertical to horizontal reading.

C.Where and how we read texts shapes our mental life.

D.People are tired of information proliferation.

【2】According to the passage, villagers .

A.have a deeper understanding of their surroundings

B.show no interest in what happens in the world

C.are less bored than media-obsessed urbanites

D.cannot adapt to changing situations

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Vertical awareness allows us to care about others.

B.Changes in our reading habits lead to the societal shift.

C.It’s wise to keep a balance between a local and a global view.

D.Horizontal reading affects our mindset more than vertical reading.

24、   The shadow play is a typical traditional entertainment that has survived and thrived over the centuries. It is taken as an earliest ancestor of modern cinema.

Legend has it that more than 2,000 years agoEmperor Wudi of the Western Han Dynasty was very depressed over the death of his favorite concubine(妃子).To help him get over his sadness, a minister made a puppet out of cotton and silk in the likeness of the concubine and projected its shadow on a curtain for the emperor to see. The show brought the emperor some comfort. He somehow believed the shadow was his lover’ spirit. This is thought to be the beginning of the shadow play.

One mouth tells stories of thousands of yearsa pair of hands operates millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works. Nicknamed “the business of the five”a shadow puppet group is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a Suona and a Yueqin, one plays the Banhu, one is in charge of percussion(打击乐器)instruments, and one sings.

During performances, “actors” are held close to a white curtain with their colored shadows cast on it by a strong light from behind. The operator plays five puppets at the same timeeach of which has three threads. Ten fingers handle fifteen threads. Moved by guiding sticksthe puppets play roles with musical accompaniment. The popularity of shadow play in some way lies in the equipment being light and easy to carry, the small number of people needed for a performance, and the flexible requirements for performance places. The plays can be quite dramatic and, when it comes to fairy tales or kungfu stories, the "actors" may be made to ride on clouds or perform unusual feats, to the great enjoyment of the audience, especially children.

The design of the figures follows traditional moral evaluation. The audience can tell a figure’s character by seeing his mask. Like the masks in Beijing Opera, a red mask represents honesty, a black mask, loyalty, and a white one, betrayal.

Nowadays, the shadow play has been industrialized and developed a series of tourist products for the promotion of Chinese culture and tourism.
