22、Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh

The Centre’s idea is summed up nicely by the old Scottish proverb, “The story is told eye to eye, mind to mind and heart to heart”. The main draw is its programme of spoken-word performances, most of which take place in its 100-seat basement theatre. The storytelling doesn’t just happen on stage, though. The ground floor has a large, airy room used for exhibitions, workshops as well as a monthly story session for tots (Tiny Tales for one- to three-year-olds).

Exit through the gift shop

No gift shop! Better than that, the centre has an independent bookshop, which specializes in fables, myths and folk stories. Many are classics passed down from generation to generation, although contemporary material also exists in abundance. Kids’ books are plentiful. Contemporary highlights include Lari Don’s Serpents and Werewolves and Janis Mackay’s The Selkie Girl. Also worth a look is Animals, Beasties and Monsters of Scotland by Lea Taylor, which forms part of The History Pres’s superb compilation (编纂) of regional Scottish folk stories. There are also Scots’ versions of Harry Potter, as well as Roald Dahl’s The Twits.

Getting there

The centre is in the middle of Edinburgh’s Old Town, at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. It’s a five-minute walk from Waverley railway station. Driving in the city centre is to be avoided; the nearest bus stops are on the High Street and North Bridge. For more information, visit Lothian Buses.

Value for money

Reasonable. Entry to the ground-floor space is free, although all the theatre performances are ticketed. Prices for shows vary, with the average around £8 for adults and £6 for children. Café Voices, the centre's monthly storytelling night, is £5.

Opening hours

10 a.m. -6 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays; Sunday (July and August only). Last entry: 5:30 pm.

23、Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.

Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.

Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “horrid” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories?

Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying parts of our history —not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.

【1】How do preservationists see buildings?

A.They focus on their value rather than appearance.

B.They pay great attention to ancient buildings.

C.They are devoted to repairing famous buildings.

D.They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.

【2】What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building?

A.It’s confusing.

B.It’s pleasing.

C.It’s regrettable.

D.It’s unbelievable.

【3】Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down?

A.To wipe the history of the Victorian era.

B.To make land available for cheap housing.

C.To work off the deep anger of the working class.

D.To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.

【4】What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?

A.To introduce some buildings with historical value.

B.To explain the reason why architects make ugly buildings.

C.To praise the work of preservationists

D.To stress the importance of preserving ugly buildings.

【5】Where does the text probably come from?

A.A culture paper.

B.A science book.

C.An environment report.

D.A travel magazine.

24、NASA has made history today, conducting the very first powered flight on another planet. The Mars Helicopter Ingenuity (机智号) successfully took to the Red Planet skies for a brief journey, which will hopefully be the first of several.

Along with accumulating 30 minutes and 48 seconds of flight time, the helicopter has traveled over the surface a distance of 2.2 miles, flying as high as 12 meters and as fast as 5 meters per second.

Flying a craft for a few seconds might not sound like too big an accomplishment, but it’s quite a remarkable achievement of engineering. Ingenuity is flying in conditions unlike any possible on Earth - the gravity on Mars is only one-third as strong as Earth’s, and the atmosphere is extremely thin, at just one percent the density compared to the Earth. Combined with the extreme cold and a lengthy radio delay, the mission has got a lot that can go wrong.

And it already has. After surviving its first cold night on Mars, Ingenuity was set to take off on April 11, but a software error during a high-speed spin test of its rotors (螺旋桨) on April 9 threw a spanner in the works. After troubleshooting the issue, NASA developed a fix and beamed a software update to the Red Planet. If all goes to plan, NASA will conduct a few more flights over the next few weeks, sending Ingenuity higher and farther each time.

“Now, 117 years after the Wright brothers succeeded in making the first flight on our planet, NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter has left this amazing footprint of success on another world,” says Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA Associate Administrator for Science. “While these two symbolic moments in NASA history may be separated by time and 173 million miles of space, they now will forever be linked. To show respect for the two bicycle makers from Dayton, this first of many airfields on other worlds will now be known as Wright Brothers Field, in recognition of the ingenuity and creativity that continue to encourage exploration.”

【1】What makes the flight of Ingenuity on Mars challenging?

A.The bad air quality on Mars.

B.The doubled gravity on Mars.

C.Both severe cold and not punctual radio.

D.The changing weather conditions of Mars.

【2】Which of the following best explains threw a spanner in the works“ underlined in paragraph 4?

A.Caused problems.

B.Found faults.

C.Repaired damage.

D.Solved crisis.

【3】Why are the Wright brothers mentioned by Thomas Zurbuchen?

A.To encourage more airplane designs.

B.To promote the spirit of ingenuity and creativity.

C.To recognize the great contributions of the Wright brothers.

D.To highlight the meaningfulness of the Ingenuity’s journey to Mars.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.A Successful Exploration on Mars

B.A Promising Future of Ingenuity Helicopter

C.NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Faces Great Challenges

D.NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Makes Historic First Flight
