二、阅读理解(共4题,共 20分)

21、   School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington, D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.

Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a. m. until 2 p.m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.

City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged and boost academics. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.

For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their perceptions of where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation conducted by PEER Associates.

22、   During the day, this 20-year-old man from Birmingham, England, who wishes to remain anonymous (匿名的), is a waiter. But by night, he is a real-life superhero, doing heroic things, like feeding the homeless. Wearing a Spider-Man suit to anonymously deliver sandwiches to those in need, he is well-known as the Birmingham SpiderMan, and hopes that his work will show others that everyone deserves a helping hand--no matter their situation.

The young man began doing charitable work years ago, but started his nighttime routine about 3 months ago. At about 9 p. m. every evening, he purchases sandwiches with his own money and then walks--like a comic book hero-to an alley where he can quietly slip into his “uniform.” He then continues to walk 6 streets handing out sandwiches to the hungry and homeless.

While wearing a superhero costume might just seem like a “fun” idea, he says that it actually draws attention to the cause. “Before when I was handing out food, no one would take a second look,” he said. “But when they see SpiderMan handing out the food they come over and ask what I'm doing and are really interested. Most importantly they become inspired to get involved themselves and start to do the charitable work.”

The anonymous man's deeds have already gained support from around the Birmingham community, inspiring some of its members to offer money. But the do-gooder does not accept cash donations--instead he urges them to get out and get involved as well. He is certainly an inspiring example of how one can “Be the Change” they wish to see in the world.

【1】Which is true about this young man?

A.He is well-known for being a waiter.

B.He plays the role of Spider-Man for a show.

D.To get himself involved in charitable work.

【4】Which words can best describe this young man?

A.Greedy and funny.

23、Today, battery power per kilowatt hour costs around only ten per cent of what it did a decade ago. And the expectation is that the costs will continue to fall, both as battery chemistry improves and because manufacturing lots of batteries on a massive scale makes the production of individual batteries cheaper.

You can be forgiven for thinking that this might only be of interest to accountants, but the implications of this are enormous, and will benefit all of us. First and most obviously, it had made the batteries in electric cars cheaper and longer-lasting. And brilliantly, because electric batteries are improving so dramatically, we can already see the results. Last September, 15 per cent of all new vehicle registrations were pure electric vehicles. So the change is starting to happen.

Better batteries don’t just mean better cars, however. They can also help us decarbonise the entire national grid(网格). Storing energy has always been a problem for the grid. Today, only a tiny amount of generated electricity is stored for later use, which leads to lots of power going to waste. But better batteries make it technologically and economically viable to store large amounts of energy from the grid.

It’s conceivable(可想象的) that in the not-too-distant future, alongside other essentials in our homes like a boiler and a fusebox, we might also have an enormous battery in the garage. This would take power from the grid (or maybe even solar panels on the roof), and power appliances and lights in our homes at the times when demand for electricity is high. Home batteries are not yet as established as electric cars, but they are also growing in popularity.

So, given how much technology has improved batteries over the last decade, I can’t help but be strangely optimistic about the future. Batteries may not be as flashy(华丽的) as phones, rockets or other new technologies, but when it comes to technology to fight climate change, they’re definitely leading the charge.

【1】What contributes to the popularity of electric cars?

A.The greater benefits to accountants.

B.The production of individual batteries.

C.The cheaper batteries running longer.

D.The disappearance of the range anxiety.

【2】What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A.Workable.

B.Cheaper.

C.Dramatic.

D.Exceptional.

【3】What does the author expect of batteries?

A.They will sell better than phones.

B.They will make the world greener.

C.They will replace the chargers on a long trip.

D.They will improve in an environment-friendly way.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Home Batteries Will Catch on

B.Petrol-powered Cars Will Be Upgraded

C.Batteries Are Getting Better and Better

D.Battery Technology Needs Improving Urgently

24、   As cars have gotten fancier, tiny computers, called microprocessors — commonly known as chips(芯片) — have been added to control many different parts of a car. Modern cars may have as many as 150 microprocessors.

Last year, many car makers had to close their factories because of COVID-19. Since they weren’t making cars, they canceled many of their orders with chip makers, which forced the companies that make microprocessors to stop making so many chips for cars. They began selling lots of chips to other kinds of companies. For example, during the lockdown many people bought computers and video game systems to help pass the time while they were stuck at home. This meant that companies which made computers and video game systems needed a lot of chips for their products. So now demand for new vehicles has returned, but there aren’t enough microprocessors.

One company that studies the car business says that the chip shortage has already caused car makers to produce 500,000 fewer cars. The company expects that number to drop by 300,000 more cars this year. Ford stopped making cars at its Kentucky factory in December, and has slowed up work at a factory in Germany. General Motors has decided to make fewer cars at its factories in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States. Honda and Nissan have stopped making cars at some of their factories. However, the problem has not affected the entire auto industry equally. Toyota says it diversified its supply chain and stored a huge number of components after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. And Hyundai didn’t cancel any of its chip orders in 2020 due to COVID-19, so it is almost not affected. But the hit to the industry has been reported at $61 billion.

Another reason for the shortage is that there just aren’t many companies that make chips. Most of the large chip-making companies are in China.

Most experts think the bottleneck is expected to last for months.

【1】Why does the author mention computers and video game systems in Paragraph 2?

A.To explain why car makers lack chips.

B.To show they can help people kill time.

C.To warn they’ll do harm to car making.

D.To prove how important chips are to cars.

【2】What can be inferred about Toyota?

A.It produced new types of cars.

B.It cancelled many chip orders.

C.It prepared for supply chain failures.

D.It united Hyundai for chip shortage.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the present chip supply?

A.Anxious.

B.Objective.

C.Tolerant.

D.Conservative.

【4】What is the suitable title for the text?

A.Automakers Promote Chip Production

B.Chip Shortage Becomes Common

C.Chip Development Is on the Way

D.Chip Shortage Hurts Car Makers

四、书面表达(共1题,共 5分)

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Third Grader Miya was sitting by the desk thinking about her composition. At the end of each year, the students will be given a writing task about the person(s) he/she is most thankful to. Miya could remember she wrote about her parents, who loved her and took care of her in grade one and her teacher, who encouraged her to be brave to raise questions in grade two. This year, she was supposed to write about somebody else. But who? The composition will be due next week. Miya racked her brains (绞尽脑汁) but still had no idea.

Looking up from her empty composition paper, Miya noticed that the other students were collecting their books and getting ready to go home. She decided to give up thinking and get on her way back home. Who knows? Maybe a good idea might come to her mind the next day.

Just at that time, John ran into the classroom and came up to Miya. John is head of the school drama club, in which Miya is a new member.

“Miya, I would like you to play a role in the drama show.” said John.

Miya agreed gladly. She loved drama and had always been dreaming of making her appearance on the stage.

Then John introduced the drama to her. It was about the adventure of three boys to the wild west. Miya was supposed to play a small role, a farm girl who discovered the hungry boys, invited them to the farm and treated them with corn bread.

She was to appear at the ending part of the drama and her lines were short and easy: Hi, buddies. You look weak. Would you like to come with me? Mom is making corn bread. It’s the most delicious in the world. Surely Miya wouldn’t have any problem remembering them. Everything went on well and the big day arrived three days later.

The drama show attracted a large audience. The hall was crowded with excited students and teachers. The three older boys went on stage and started their “adventure” to the wild west.

注意:1.续写的词数应为150左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

As Miya waited behind the curtain for her turn to perform, nervousness started to grow insider her.
