26、The Palace Museum, known as the Forbidden City (紫禁城), was the imperial (帝王的) palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the early 15th century, large-size construction caused 100,000 common people to lead a hard life. The construction took 14 years and was finished in 1420. In the following year, the capital of Ming Dynasty was moved from Nanjing to Beijing. Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties ruled from the Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner court. It was not until 1925 that the complex buildings were changed into a museum. Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public.

The Palace Museum is rectangular (长方形的) in shape, about 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall, encircled by a 52-meter-wide moat (护城河). In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Province, while in the Qing Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were mined from the suburban (郊外的) district of Fangshan and other districts. Construction of the Forbidden City brought huge hardship to the laboring people.

The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture (建筑) still standing. Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The palace has been expanded several times, but the original design was preserved. After liberation, some costly renovations (翻新) were done and the Palace Museum is listed as one of the important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese government.

27、In 1869, the Smiley family purchased an area of land about 100 miles north of New York City. Over time, some of their property and much of the surrounding landscape became the Mohonk Preserve, which has since grown to 8,000 acres and attracts visitors and rock climbers.

But the Mohonk Preserve also has a long scientific legacy. In the 1930s, Dan Smiley, a descendent of the original owners, began keeping track of the plants and animals that lived in the area.

Megan Napoli is a research ecologist with the Mohonk Preserve in New York. She thinks Smiley’s efforts produced a rare long-term data set of observations, which is useful for studying the impacts of climate change. For instance, other research has shown that songbirds are migrating north earlier and earlier in the spring.

It's important for the birds to arrive at the proper time in the spring, because they need to time their arrival with the insect emergence. So they need to be here to establish their nesting sites, lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, they have their baby birds, so they need to time it when the insects are most abundant.

Napoli has begun analyzing about 76,000 observations of songbird migration dates collected by Smiley and his team to see if they, too, show that climate change has altered the timing of migrations. Her results suggest that they do.

Napoli found that short-distance migrants that spend their winters in the southern U. S. now arrive an average of eleven days earlier than they did in the 1930s. Long-distance migrants that overwinter in the tropics arrive roughly a week earlier. Napoli presented her results at a recent Ecological Society of America meeting in Portland, Oregon.

Meanwhile, who knows how many other long-term, personal data collections like Smiley’s are out there, waiting to be discovered and to help improve official attempts to track the planet’s changes.

3What does Megan Napoli think of Smiley’s long-term record?

A. It has affected the birds’ migration.

B. It challenges the previous research.

C. It has changed official attitudes.

D. It is of great value to her research.

4What can we learn from Napoli’s research?

A. It is totally based on Smiley’s long-term notes.

C. Climate change affects birds’ migration time.

D. It contributes greatly to other personal research.

28、Tu Youyou has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize for her work in helping to discover a crucial new treatment for malaria. The 84-year-old’s route to the honour has been anything but traditional. In China, she is being called the “three nos” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas.

In 1967, malaria, a deadly disease at that time, spread by mosquitoes was decimating Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit “Mission 523” was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of “Mission 523”.

The team read ancient books carefully for a long time to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for the medicine for malaria, more than 240,000 compounds around the world had already been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood, which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 CE. The team took out one active compound in wormwood, and then tested it.

But nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she changed the drug recipe one final time, heating the compound without allowing it to reach boiling point.

After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu Youyou volunteered to be the first human recipient of the new drug. In any case, Tu Youyou is consistently praised for her drive and passion. One former colleague, Li Lianda, says Ms Tu is “unsociable and quite straightforward”, adding that “if she disagrees with something, she will say it.”

Another colleague, Liao Fuming, who has worked with Tu Youyou for more than 40 years, describes her as a “tough and stubborn woman”. Stubborn enough to spend decades piecing together ancient texts, she applies them to modern scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.

A.Tu has a medical degree

B.Tu discovered a cure for malaria

C.Tu’s road to success is not traditional

D.Tu is the first woman to win the Nobel Prize

29、Promotion at work can be good for the pocket. However,it can also be very risky for a person's mental health, according to British researchers from the University of Warwick in Coventry.

The new findings go strongly against the common belief that advancement in a career can result in better health because of an increased sense of selfconfidence, life control and overall wellbeing(幸福感 ).“Getting a promotion at work is  not as great as many people may think. Our research finds that the  mental health of managers typically deteriorates after a job promotion and goes beyond merely a shortterm change in a way,”said Chris Boyce, the researcher of the University of Warwick. He  also added  that  they could  not find any health  benefits  in individuals who had had job promotions.Instead, these people  don't go to hospital to have health checks as often as they should, which may be something to worry about rather than celebrate.

To find out whether there is a connection between job  advancement and physical health,Boyce and his team used data  from the British Household Panel Survey. The data contained  information on nearly 1,000 recently promoted individuals in the  United Kingdom. And the data contained information on many  aspects of life, including work and selfreported health. After analyzing all the available information, they discovered that there was no evidence of improved physical health after a job promotion.

However, what the researchers did find was evidence of  greater mental stress. The experts found that promotion gives  people,on average,10 percent more mental stress and up to 20 percent less time to visit their doctors in the event of illness.Matt  Smith,a Scottish health expert, said mental stress is caused by working long hours. He said,“When someone is promoted there  might be even more pressure to work longer hours and therefore they can't afford the time to care about their health.”

1According to the text we can learn that work promotion________.

A. is traditionally believed to be harmful to people's health

B. decreases people's selfconfidence and happiness

C. gives people more chances to have health checks

D. can help raise people's income to some extent

2The underlined word “deteriorates” in the second paragraph means “becomes___”.

A. satisfying   B. doubtful

C. optimistic   D. worse

3What do we know from Boyce's research?

A. It analyzed many aspects of the promoted individuals' lives.

B. It surveyed 1,000 people in the world.

C. It showed how people gained work promotion.

D. It proved that work promotion may lead to a shortterm change in health.

4From the last paragragh we can learn that________.

A. people who are promoted suffer from increased mental stress

B. the work after promotion will take up 20 percent of people's leisure time

C. promoted individuals tend to pay more attention to their health

D. poor health condition makes promoted individuals feel stressed

5What is the best title for this text?

A. Work Promotion Helps Increase SelfConfidence.

B. Work Promotion Is Actually Bad for One's Health.

C. Work Promotion Means Having to Work Harder.

D. Work Promotion Brings Wealth and Health.
