27、A storm hit Houston, Texas, on Tuesday. It brought heavy rains and rising floodwaters. By Tuesday night, some parts of the city had received 10 inches of rain. Police and firefighters helped people move to safe places. They also saved people from cars and buses that were stuck on roads.
Certain areas around Houston were hit really hard. In just four hours, more than seven inches of rain fell in Sugar Land in the southwest of Houston. Cars could not pass through any of the area’s main roadways. On Twitter, Sugar Land city officials asked people to get to high ground.
Tuesday’s rain hit parts of Texas that Hurricane Harvey had already damaged almost two years ago. Hurricane Harvey in August, 2017 was the second most costly hurricane in US history. It caused $125 billion worth of damage in Texas. In the Houston area, 36 people died and about 150,000 homes were flooded.
A spokesman for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said that this week’s rain “is not in any way a Harvey-level event”.
But the worst may not be over yet. People will have a break from the heavy rain on Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to experience heavy rain later in the week.“Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,”said Don Oettinger, a National Weather Service meteorologist (气象学家).
Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peia warned,“As there is too much water on the ground and flash floods are likely to happen, we hope people are careful of what they’re doing and encourage them to stay home. There’s no sense in putting yourself, firefighters or anybody in danger needlessly.”

28、Three Chinese astronauts recently arrived at the country’s new space station in another step forward for the growing space power. Here is a look at some of the space station’s major goals.
The three-member crew will stay for three months in the station’s main living space, called a module (舱). The module is named Tianhe, which means “Harmony of the Heavens” in Chinese. The astronauts will carry out science experiments and perform maintenance. They also plan to complete space walks and prepare the station to receive two other modules next year.
While China admits it arrived late to the space station game, it says its new station is modern and includes the latest space technology. Tianhe might even outlast (更长久) the International Space Station (ISS), which is nearing the end of its operational lifespan (寿命). The recent launch brought back China’s crewed space program after a five-year break. China has now sent 14 astronauts into space since its first launch in 2003. It is the third country after the former Soviet Union and the United States to do so.
As its economy experienced growth in the 1990s, China made a plan for space exploration. Since then, it has attempted to carry out this plan carefully and evenly (平均地). China was banned from joining the ISS. It is likely, however, that China would have built its own station anyway because of its goal to become a major space power.
Ji Qiming is the Assistant Director of the China Manned Space Agency. He recently told reporters that the building and operation of the space station will raise the level of Chinese technologies. He also said it will “accumulate experience for all the people”.
【1】What will the crew do in the module?

【2】What is true of the International Space Station?
A.It is the most modern.
B.It was built in 2017.
C.Its operation will soon end.
D.Its lifespan is short.

A.To challenge ISS.
B.To show its determination.
C.To keep a promise.
D.To join the ISS.
【4】Which of the following does the underlined part “all the people” refer to?
A.People all over the world.

29、Differences are important and they should be respected. For example, many important people throughout history were considered different, such as Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln. They did great things, but some people thought they were strange because they had strong feelings about something. I can understand these people because I’ve been in that situation before many times.
It all started in elementary school when I realized that I wasn’t like everyone else. My mom says that I have a tendency to be obsessed(着迷)with certain subjects. Unfortunately, these subjects don’t interest other kids of my age and they really don’t interest my teachers. In fact, my kindergarten teacher said she would scream if I mentioned snakes or lizards one more time while she was teaching the days of the week. I would get into trouble for not paying attention and the teasing began.
In the third grade, my teacher informed me that I have Asperger’s Syndrome(症状). I said, “So what? Do you know that Godzilla’s suit weighs 188 pounds?”
Later, I asked my mom, “What’s Asperger’s Syndrome? Am I gonna die?” She said that it’s like having blinders on, and that I can only see one thing at a time, and that it’s hard to focus on other things.
People also make fun of me for knowing facts about volcanoes, whales, tornadoes and many other scientific things. My mom says that she has been able to answer many questions on Jeopardy! just by listening to what I have to say, but I’ve even been laughed at for being smart.
Maybe someday I’ll become a gene engineer and create the real Godzilla. I can dream, Can’t I?
【1】Why does the author mention people like Albert Einstein?
A. To examine differences B. To show his admiration
C. To make comparison D. To support his idea
【2】How did the kindergarten teacher feel about the author?
A. Angry B. Worried
C. Sorry D. Curious
【3】What’s Jeopardy! most probably?
A. It’s a program intended for young kids. B. It’s a quiz show covering various topics.
C. It’s a novel telling about adventure stories. D. It’s a magazine about scientific discoveries.

32、阅读下面文章,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整短文。
Anne would take part in a swimming competition the next morning and she was too nervous to sleep well. She tossed and turned all night.
She was no stranger to competition. In fact, she loved it. Anne was very athletic and her strong will and diligent spirit brought her respect and love. She was not only part of a swim team, but a soccer team, as well. Before she took up swimming, she had been playing soccer. She got along well with her teammates in the soccer team, and they usually encouraged each other before games. Just two days before the swimming competition, she had a regular soccer practice. Her soccer teammates noticed her anxiety and asked her about it. She lowered her head, murmuring. “I’ll take a swimming competition, and this particular competition was important. I had made it all the way to the finals and didn’t want to let my teammates down.” One of her soccer teammates patted her shoulder, “Just be yourself?” When Anne walked away, her soccer teammates looked at her back. They just couldn’t let it go.
The morning finally came. Having slept so poorly, Anne was not at all ready for the day. She was terribly anxious about the competition, so much so that she couldn’t even eat breakfast. It felt as though her stomach was doing somersaults (翻腾).
Anne’s mother looked concerned. “You have to eat something,” she said. “It’s important to keep your strength up.”
“I know, I’m just not hungry this morning,” Anne replied, picking at her eggs with a fork. All she could think about was facing the competition. What if she performed poorly? What if she disappointed her coach and teammates? She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.
“Honey, drink the milk and have some bread. I’ll wait for you in the car. We just have 10 minutes left.” Hearing that, Anne had a quick breakfast, grabbed her gym bag and got into the car.
Half an hour later, she got to the athletic club where the swim meet was being held. She went to the locker room to prepare for the competition, but when she opened her gym bag, she was quite surprised.
