After many tries, she still failed. “Maybe I can’t reach the ocean(海洋),” she said sadly to herself.

At this time, a deep voice said: “If a breeze (微风) can cross the desert, so can a river.” It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered: “That’s because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.”

“That’s because you can’t give up(放弃) what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the breeze, it can take you across,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! 23、   We all enjoy the colors of autumn leaves. Did you ever wonder how and why a leaf changes color? Where do the yellows and oranges come from? To answer those questions, we first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.

Leaves are the world's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖), a kind of sugar. Plants use it as food for energy and growing.

A chemical called chlorophyll(叶绿素) in the leaves gives plants their green color. As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees know it's time to begin getting ready for winter.

During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their foodmaking factories. As the green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves.

The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, like maples(枫树), sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn the glucose in the leaves into a red color. And we can enjoy the beautiful red leaves during autumn.

1Which of the following can you put in the box?

sunlight CO2 glucose

A.water B.sugar C.wind D.air

2Why do the leaves turn yellow in  autumn?

A.Because they are short of glucose and energy.

B.Because they are short of sunlight and water.

C.Because they are short of sunlight and CO2.

D.Because they are short of water and CO2.

3Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A.When autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter.

B.During winter, trees live on the food they store in summer.

C.Trees begin to stop making food and to have a rest in summer.

D.During winter, some of yellow and orange colors are still in the leaves.

4What's the main idea about the passage?

A.It tells us all kinds of plants on the earth.

B.It tells us the plants can grow well with the sunlight.

C.It tells us maple leaves change the color as other trees.

D.It tells not all the colors of the leaves are from chlorophyll.

七、短文填空(共1题,共 5分)

24、Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words

My wife and I recently welcomed a child into the world. His only interest right now is keeping us awake 24/7. But one day, he’ll need to learn something about finance. When he does, here are some suggestions.

1) You might think you want an expensive car, a fancy watch, and a huge house. But you don’t. What you want is respect and admiration from other people. You think having expensive stuff will bring it. It a【1】 never does-especially from the people you want to respect and admire you.

2) The road to financial regret is paved with debt. Some debt, such as a mortgage, is OK. But most spending that results in debt is the equivalent of a drug: a quick hit of p【2】 that wears off, only to drag you down for years to come, limiting your options and keeping you weighed down by the baggage of your past.

3) I hope you’re poor at some point. Not struggling, and not unhappy, of course. But there’s no way to learn the value of money without feeling the power of its scarcity. It teaches you the difference between n【3】 and desirable. It’ll make you learn to enjoy what you have, fix what’s broken, and shop for a bargain. These are essential survival skills.

4) If you’re like most people, you’ll spend most of your adult life thinking, “Once I’ve saved/earned $X, everything will be great.” Then you’ll hit $X, move the goalposts, and resume chasing your tail. It’s a miserable c【4】. Your goals should be about more than money.

5) Don’t stay in a job you hate because you made a career choice at 18. Almost no one knows what he or she wants to do at that age. Many people don’t know what they want until they’re t【5】 that age. (These are the signs you’re in the wrong career.)

6) The best thing money buys is to control over your time. It gives you options and f【6】 you from relying on someone else’s priorities. One day you’ll realize that this freedom is one of the things that makes your truly happy.

7) Some people are born into families that encourage education others are from families that are a【7】 it. Some are born into flourishing economies others, into war and poverty. I want you to be successful, and I want you to earn it. But realize that not all success is due to hard work and not all poverty is due to laziness. Keep this in mind when judging people, including yourself.

8) Your savings rate has a little to do with how much you earn and a lot to do with how much you spend. I know a dentist who lives paycheck to paycheck, always on the edge of ruin. I know another person who never earned more than $50, 000 and saved a fortune. The difference is entirely due to their spending. Living with less is the most efficient way to control your financial future.
